I hereby declare The Hop Shop my favorite beer store to visit while passing through the state of Indiana.

Stopped by hoping to pick up some FFF bombers while going back to St. Louis after a holiday visit to Michigan. I'm glad I did.

The store was very clean and well lit. The shelves were lined with bombers, and six packs with single bottle purchases available.

I was greeted at the door and was offered help immediately.

The selection was plentiful, with a wide range of local, national, and international beers. The beers are arrange by style versus brewer. This threw me initially but was no problem at all. It's really an interesting way to showcase the beers. My FFF fix was taken care of for sure. I grabbed some Gumballhead, Alpha King, Alpha Klaus, Rabbid Rabbit, and Munsterfest. Also on the shelves were favorites from Bell, Founder's, Stone, Dark Horse, Goose Island, and many more.

Prices were pretty close to everyone else.

I'll be back the next time I head north. Long live The Hop Shop!

I really love this place. They've got a great selection and the service is great. They've got a good selection of micros and a decent selection of imports (mainly belgians). They are always getting new stuff in though and stock changes quite a bit. They've got a decent selection of cigars as well, high quality stuff though. They also carry a good amount of wine. Nearly all spirits are gone from the store to make more room for beer and wine. Whoever is working always has great advice on new stuff to try and is great at holding limited release stuff back for me. Keeps me loyal.

Stopped in here on a couple trips through the area on my way to Chicago. The selection has really fallen since my first stop in. They carry the Indiana locals, but not too much other than the big Micros. Stone, Dark Horse, Upland, and others. I remember picking up quite a bit of rare and hard to find beer here in previous trips, but the last time I walked out without buying a thing. With so many other quality beer stores in the area I don't think that I'll take the time to stop in here anymore. Seems to be catering to the wine and spirits crowd more, and giving less shelf space to craft and import beer.
Hopefully they turn things around and get back to where they once were.

I have made a few stops to The Hop Shop since moving here from Wisconsin. The owner is usually on hand and quite helpful. He gladly takes requests on hard-to-find beers, and seems to have a good relationship with his customers and distributor.
The selection is very good and slowly improving. There could be a few more imports, but the space is utilized well without crowding. Beers are organized by style which is especially nice.
Prices are reasonable for central Indiana. The real perks are discount mix-match packs and buying singles. There is also a nice selection of glassware.
A fine, quality shop and well worth the stop.

Made two attempts to stop by while in Indy for the week. They close at 8pm during the week (unlike most other beer/liquor stores).

Had high expectations which were not met. The focus is on quality beer but it was well short of what Kahn's on Keystone carries - especially in the Belgian dept.

I liked the fact that the beers were sorted by style and that may have lead to the impression that they didn't have a strong inventory by brewer. I felt fortunate that I was able to pick up two Upland Cherry Lambics.

I'll add them to my circuit when in town, especially since they're on the way to a visit to my parents.

This is my new beer supplier. My wife and I love this place because everytime we visit we leave with something new. Most of the stores around Indi that carry good beer dont carry half of the stuff this place does. The display of the beer is top notch as well. The beers are categorized into beer styles not breweries which I perfer because if I am in the mood for a certain style I want all the different beers right there in front of me. The guy that is always there is extrmely helpful as well. The prices are probably the most competitive in town, 10% case dicounts help and being able to make your own 6 packs.

A great selection. I was confused at first because everything was sorted by style. As I'm knew to the beer drinking culture, it was a short-lived frustration. The staff was very helpful in guiding me throughout the store on a "style" tour.

The Hop Shop has a HUGE selection of single, next to the sixers instead of their own section. I was able to pick up some single of various Polish beers for my dad (hard to find in Indianapolis).

The staff overall was very helpful and pleasant. Seemed to know their beer. I thought the price was good, compared to what I had seen at other liquor stores in the area.

Really good selection and I like that they sort everything by style. It's a little confusing at first, but once you figure it out, it makes a ton of sense. It's also fun to see your favorite breweries popping up in the different style sections. Another bonus was a pretty large selection of singles, virtually everything could be had as a single. There was also a decent number of bombers which I like a lot. Guy behind the counter was helpful and seemed to know his stuff. Some things seemed really overpriced, but then on the other hand, some things seemed really cheap. Good store to swing by if you are on the north side of Indy.

Excellent service and excellent choices. The girl working was very helpful and even quite knowledgable about their selection and seemed to know a fair bit about beer herself, at least enough to be helpful.

They have a very nice selection, imports, micros, macros, from all over, including one of the best selections of Hoosier beer I've seen. You can get six-packs and singles. If you make your own six-pack you do get a percentage off, starting at 5% for one six-pack and going to 10% for two. I don't know about further up.

Their lay out is a lot different than I'm used to. Instead of having beers by region/country, they have it by style. You'll find Irish, German, English, American, and South American beers all under the dark beer section (porter, stout, and dark lager) for example. Once you get used to it, though, it's rather neat.

Stopped in last summer as part of our visit to Indy to play in the indoor water park at a nearby hotel and check out the Children's Museum. Open feel to the store, plenty of room between the aisles. Patron are welcome to create their own sixers, which I did quite a bit. Not a wide selection of bombers but I did grab an Existential Hopwine.

There is a good focus on local products which is exactly what I was looking for. Dark Horse, Mad Anthony, Barley Island come to mind.

The staff was willing to explain the layout of the store, show me to the the craft beer section, pretty helpful. I'd visit again if in the area.

Having recently discovered this store it has become a staple supplier of my beer needs.

A great selection of good beer, kept regularly in stock as it is available. Discounts for mixed packs starting at 5% for six, 10% for 12, etc. Very friendly and helpful staff with a lot of knowledge about beer. The selection is occasionally missing bottles that I can find at other places locally, but overall one of the best stores on the north side of Indy. Plus, they're clearing out all the liquor to make more room for beer!

The store is run by probably the best and most accessible shop owner that I've ever encountered. Courtney that owns the place is very knowledgeable about his products in the store and will talk with you about anything in his shop. I probably talked with him for a good thirty minutes ranging from the hop shortage, his competition, breweries, and local brew pubs. It is just good to do business with someone that still believes in customer service that much and taking care of the people that take care of him.

Everything is the store is impeccable. Everything is well sorted and in order, and it is all categorized by location of the brewery. The selection is great for craft beer enthusiasts. The selection isn't quite as big as Kahn's or Party Pak, but everything that I could want for the most part is there. Courtney also told me that they are trying to sell out of their liquor supply and will be replacing that section with more beer, so soon enough he will have a bigger selection than he already has.

His prices are slightly less than others as well. Fifty cents less is about what most of his items are price pointed at.

Stopped in on a north side shopping run to check the place out. Picked up 12 beers to get the 10% discount. Selection was good, but not great. Missing lots of things I can find elsewhere. That said, they seemed the have all the better stuff you can find in Indiana. Had the Rogue 10,000 which I hadn't seen before, but I couldn't pull the trigger on $23.99. Service was very good -- the guys working were very helpful and friendly. A nice place but certianly not the best in town. Might be the best on the north side, but I am not sure.

Stopped in over the weekend. I was in town with a new baby and could only hit one place in town. Based upon other beerfly reviews this was the most intriguing. A Very clean and bright store. Well described in other reviews. Good selection of cold beer. Great selection of singles. No dust on the bottles. Being from Chicago I was able to pick-up 3 six's of singles that were not available in Chi-town. Stone, Brooklyn, and a number of local breweries i have not had a chance to sample. Staff was very attentive, knowledgeable and friendly. It was well worth the trip from downtown.

Went there during my trip home to see the folks for Xmas. I was absolutely blown away by the selection. By comparison, the best store that I've found in Texas has at best 40% of the number of different beers available here (if you love beer and are thinking of moving to Texas...don't). The store mainly sells their beers warm and has 5-6 display racks with beers on both sides running from floor to about 6-7 feet. They have most available as 6ixers or singles so you can mix and match as you please. They also had quantity discounts to encourage you to load up. The selections went deep into several breweries instead of just offering the top sellers. Amazing selection that makes me miss Indy even more.
The service was also excellent. As soon as I walked in they mopped up my drool and asked if they could help me out. They also told me about the discounts. During my long perusal, 3 different people offered me help. All three were knowledgeable about the beers and steered me in the right direction.
Bought 20 beers to drink during the trip and to ship home and 2 had expired dates (one 6 months over) so just 4.5 on quality. Still beats the average here though.
Highly recommend. Load up on some good beer and then hit the Claddagh pub in the same parking lot and you got yourself a great day.

FInally got a chance to stop in here before the Barley Hop Academy. All I can say is, I'm a schmuck for having waited this long.

There are beers that I've traded for in here, thinking they were unavailable in Indy.

I haven't opened anything I bought yet, but my guess is that the quality will be high. No dust on any of the bottles, everything appeared to be well rotated, nothing looked old.

Staggering selection of beers from all over the world. And not just the US, England, Germany and Belgium. THere are Polish beers (a whole selection of Okocim), Japanese beers, Welsh beers, you name it.

The staff was very helpful, and also very knowledgeable. And friendly, too.

The prices are a little high on some things, and lower than average on others. But nothing was insanely priced just because it was rare, like you find at other places (*cough* KAHNS *cough*). And they have a deal where you can mix your own six pack, twelve pack, or case, and get a 5, 10, or 15% discount, respectively.

As a side note, they also have a mind-numbing array of wines and liquors.

I cannot recommend the Hop Shop highly enough.

Finally got the chance to shoot an hour and a half south to check out a beer store in the "big city." I gotta admit, I was a little nervous driving though all the Starbucks and other mass marketing crap, thinking I might find a place that sold malternative beverages and fancy vodka only. I was pleasantly surprised.

The Hop Shop is pretty small. The store is split between wine, beer, and liquor, but definitely focuses on beer. There are 4 large, double sided shelves loaded with beers from all over the world. In addition, there are 4 coolers with chilled beverages. Granted, some beers can be found in both places, but the selection is great. Stone, North Coast, Bells, Arcadia, tons of Belgians, and the list goes on.

A comment on the service. I had driven an hour and a half and when I got there, they told me my 2 year old son couldn't come in with me. I understand this is not their fault. It is an Indiana law, I just have never seen it enforced. Can't blame them. When I told them how far I drove and showed them the long list of stuff I wanted to buy, they relented. Gotta give them some credit for putting there asses on the line to let a beer lover run through the candy store.

Smaller store with quite a bit of bigger names in good beer, great selection available including but not limited to, Three Floyd's, Dogfish Head, Arcadia Ales, Unibroue, Bell's, New Holland, Great Divide, Founder's along with many others. Pricing was in line with the area, no sticker shock from what I looked at in comparison from the other great stores I have available to me. Only complaint or slight dislike about the store might be the store layout as far as keeping all of the beers from their selective brewers in more or less the same location for ease of product location. I found myself leaving the store unsure of how much of some of my favorite breweries were represented in respect to how many of the beers offered from the breweries were in the store. Overall a pretty solid little store with better than average selection, maybe some floorplan/layout issues. Enjoyed the very clearly displayed price tags directly below every product on the shelves to eliminate any confusion there as I have dealt with that in many stores. Will surely visit again, great location for me working less than a mile away.

As others have mentioned, this is a great addition to the Indy beer scene. I stopped by earlier today promising reminding myself that I didn't have any money to spend, and walked out with twelve different singles (reaching the 10% discount!). Their selection is nice, but not as diverse as other local stores (such as Kahn's). Selection of belgians and german beers was decent, but nothing out of this world. The micro selection was very nice however, and they had a ton of different Bell's brews. In fact, 9 of my 12 beers were Bell's products that I hadn't had the chance to try yet! Also found this year's Stone Imperial Russian Stout there (they had a few left if anyone in the area is trying to find one).

Service was just what I asked for: helpful when I needed it and not bothersome when I didn't. He made sure to remind me about their six pack deal (5% off six singles, 10% off 12), and recommended the Founders Rubaes when I asked.

Prices were slightly less than I might expect at Kahn's, and I did notice a few items that were cheaper there than at Big Red in Bloomington (where I normally am shopping).

Definitely worth checking out if you are in the area.

Stoped by on a quick recent trip to visit some old friends and see my old stomping grounds. This store was a nice addition to the Indy scene and a solid alternative to Kahn's. Decent if moderate selection of brews but the 3F's and some other IN beers which don't make it north of the border were there along with a nice array of quality Belgian, German and British brews. Great layout, immaculate store and a few bottles of tasting to boot. Courtney was a great host before even finding out my BA connection and I could have talked brew with him for hours. Great guy and this should be a valuable long-term addition to Northside.

The hop shop was my second stop in Indianapolis. The hop shop is well lighted and the shelves are easy to get around. A very roomy sort of store. The clerk was very knowledgeable about both the stock and beer in general. He was able to make numerous sugestions on beers in the store. The selection is not as big as some other places but it is still top notch. There is a lot of cold beer available in the cooler. There is a pretty extensive wine collection. However, I came here for the beer. Everything in the store was also sold as singles. There was discounts available for buying mixed sixes of singles and mixed cases.

This, my first review of a liquor store, was inspired by an exceptional act of customer service. I bought several De Dolle beers, which the cashier placed into an empty six pack. Now, I know to always carry them from the bottom, and sure enough, as I unlocked my car and held the six-pack from the top, the bottom fell out. None of the beers broke, but the seal was broken on two of them. So, I went back into the store, and asked Courtney, the owner, if he wanted to drink some beers. I told him what happened, that I was a dumbass, and said it was no big deal. He immediately went and got two replacement beers, and we proceeded to drink. I never asked him to replace the beers, nor did I expect him to. Cheers to you, Courtney.

This place does not have the biggest selection in town, but the prices are great, and Courtney is almost always there and willing to talk beer. The emphasis is obviously quality over quantity. They have good cheeses, cigars, sake, calvados, and wine. Tastings are frequent, and they get most special releases.

I was very impressed by the selection of American micro/craft brews that they carry. The staff seemed knowledgeable, but I honestly did not spend much time discussing beer. We were in close to closing time and wanted to get our beer. I picked up a good sampling from Bell's, FFF, Stone, and a couple Belgians.

The prices were very reasonable for Indiana, and I got a 10% discount for buying 12+ singles (including several champagne-sized bottles).

I will definitely be returning on my next trip to Indy!

I was in Indianapolis on business this week. Upon reading some reviews, I ventured out to buy some beer as the selection back home (Knoxville, TN) sucks. I decided to go check out the Hop Shop and am very glad I did. Not only do they have an excellent overall selection, but service is top notch. Courtney (the owner) gave me some fantastic recommendations, based on what types of beers I like. He and I spoke about beer for at least half an hour, and it was obvious that this guy knows his stuff. He steered me away from some of the beers I was interested in and towards several he felt I would enjoy more. The guy is a beer freak, and I mean that in the best way! I didn't make it to any of the other area beer stores, because I ended up with plenty from The Hop Shop. I'm sure I might have found plenty to purchase at these other stores, but can't imagine finding any better service or quality.

The Hop Shop is Indy's newest beer shop and its story is still being written. The selection continues to improve with every passing month. Having been to every major beer store in the area, I can say that the Hop Shop is one of my favorite places to go for several reasons. First of all the quality of their beer is excellent. This is due to them doing a pretty brisk business for the beers they do stock and keeping them pretty fresh, and also related to the fact that they don't carry nearly as many different beers as Kahn's or Parti Pak. Their beer is all organized very well and there is plenty of room to maneuver around the store, unlike at some of the other beer stores. The owner is much more interested in keeping the beer they have fresh rather than having an ungodly amount of different beers to choose from, which I can respect. Of course ideally a beer store would have both an ungodly amount of different beers and enough turnover that none would ever go bad, but that certainly doesn't happen in Indy, and probably not anywhere else either. That said, the selection here is lacking in some ways. They rarely carry the full line of a brewery, nor do they have nearly the foreign beer selection of Kahn's and Parti Pak, though they do have a respectable Belgian selection, including some Cantillon, De Dolle, and others. They specialize in American Micros though, and have a great selection of the regional and local breweries to Indy. They also have a particularly good Dogfish Head selection for whatever reason. They do get all of the special releases from those breweries, like FFF Dreadnaught, Bell's Batch 7000, and others, though they don't last too long before running out.

The best feature of the Hop Shop is the ability to purchase singles of every beer they offer. On top of this, you can create your own six pack (they provider the empty six pack holders) for a 5% discount from the single prices, and if you create 2 six packs, you get 10% off! This is a spectactular deal. The singles are marked up from what their six pack equivalent prices would be, but if you get two mixed six packs, that markup almost completely disappears. And on top of that you get to try 12 different beers that you haven't had before. Also, anything but 750s are eligible for the discount, even the beers that they only sell in singles because of price, like JW Lees, World Wide Stout, and Belgians, not to mention Bombers and 500mL bottles. This is the main reason I go back to this store so often, because I don't want to buy a six pack of every new beer in case I don't like it.

The service is also usually very good, as Courtney (a guy), the owner, is usually there and has excellent beer knowledge. The other workers all seem to be very competent and knowledgeable as well. I would highly recommend this store to anyone visiting the area, but if you really want the absolute best selection, go to Parti Pak, or Kahn's if you don't mind being overcharged.
