Deep brown, sort of a caramel colour, with a thin cap that settled quickly to a modest collar and wisps of fine bubbles on the surface of the beer. Sweet, malty aroma, notes of caramel and toffee, balanced by barrel character - woody and slightly boozy, not quite cheesy. Pretty nice overall. Sweetness, wood, and booze fight it out in the flavour too, but now there's a solid bitterness that plays counterpoint throughout. Sugary sweetness, bitterness mid-palate, alcohol warmth, woody astringency, toffee. Low carbonation, full (fairly heavy) body. There's a lot of character here from the barrel aging -- booze and tannins mostly -- balanced nicely by a solid barleywine. Definitely worth trying - more than once.

Another outstanding brew from Goose Island. What it lacks in appearance it makes up for in taste, twofold. Barleywines, nowadays, seem to lack that barley presence in favor of the coffee/chocolate tastes. This is not one of those. The head lacing are virtually nonexistent. So what? If you have no fear of the dark you will feel right at home here.
