2013 Bourbon County Brand Barleywine Ale
Appearance: Pours thick, almost syrupy into my new belgium globe glass. Half finger of dark tan head forms. Beer is almost black with just some hint of maroon. Head is sticking around longer than expected with the high abv. Not much lacing.
Smell: Bourbon, chocolate, raisins, figs, sweet. Smells like a hybrid between a stout and a barleywine to me with no aspect overpowering any of the others.
Taste: Sweet dark fruits slowly meld into a ever so slight tart raspberry flavor that lingers on the palate. Lots going on here with many flavors slowly working across your palate with each sip. Toffee, vanilla, bite of alcohol, cocoa, raisins.
Mouthfeel: excellent, thick, sticky has a tendency to kind of foam in your mouth in a good way. really brings all the flavors across nicely.
Overall, the best barleywine I have ever tried. Quite delicious but to me also seems really similar to a quality quad, at least right now in the early going.

Another outstanding brew from Goose Island. What it lacks in appearance it makes up for in taste, twofold. Barleywines, nowadays, seem to lack that barley presence in favor of the coffee/chocolate tastes. This is not one of those. The head lacing are virtually nonexistent. So what? If you have no fear of the dark you will feel right at home here.
