2013, bottled Sep 13
A: A modest half finger of tanish head built in the snifter glass before quickly falling back and leaving a ring of small bubbles on the edge of the glass. Streaking alcohol legs pop out when given a little swirl in the glass. The beer is a dark brown leather looking color with a hue when held to a backlite that almost looks purple? Sure..
S: Heavy aroma in the way of prunes, raisins, over ripened plums and sweet caramel notes. The barrel character is more subdued as compared to BCBS but noticeable as vanilla, oak and charred toffee.
T: Where to start.. Dark stone fruit, plums, nectarines, raisins similar to the nose. The middle sweet malts are caramel like and brown sugar with molasses. Balance is on the malt side and coming off very sweet. I don't detect much in the way of hop flavor but the bitterness is moderate in the beginning combining with the bourbon flavor nicely. The barrel character, again, is fairly subdued in this beer by the sweetness, a slight bit of oakey flavor is coming through but its mostly a mouth feel.
M: The nice tingling tongue sensation after a few sips that I love with all of the bourbon county (and lots of other ba beers). Low levels of carbonation and a sticky sweet syrup film is left on the tongue with the tingling. Body is moderate to big but manages to be refreshing at cooler temps. Alcohol warming is present to remind you to slow down and enjoy.
O: A great beer in its own right. The base beer is a delicious example of a barley wine (english style im guessing) but I would have liked to get more of the barrel flavor out of it. Glad I got to try it, but I wouldn't raise hell to get another.

Surprisingly on tap at San Diego Brewing Co, poured into an 8 oz goblet
A: Cola-like color, no head and viscous.
S: Booze and toffee are the prominent aromas. Notes of coconut, nutmeg, oak and cherry as we'll. Strong bouquet carried by ample alcohol volatiles.
T: Flavors follow but notes of vanilla are right at the front. Also picking up notes of tobacco and ripe fruit. Finishes long and sweet with lots residue between sips...in a good way.
M: chewy, sticky, yummy
Serving type: on-tap
