Appearance: Poured from bottle into a snifter. Pours a very rich brownish-black with slightly translucent brown edges. Aggressive pours yields half-finger head that immediately dissipates to a very thin ring around the edge of the glass.
Aroma: Rich, old, candied fruit notes, woodiness, vanilla, bourbon.
Taste: All the notes from the nose are present, but blend into each other exquisitely. Bourbon character is more noticeable, alcohol is perceptible. Faint note of chocolate in there somewhere. Finishes long, with wood and old fruit flavors.
Mouthfeel: Full bodied, light carbonation. Very smooth.
Overall: Outstanding. Bourbon character perfectly complements this barleywine. Beautiful, complex, amazingly smooth.

Another outstanding brew from Goose Island. What it lacks in appearance it makes up for in taste, twofold. Barleywines, nowadays, seem to lack that barley presence in favor of the coffee/chocolate tastes. This is not one of those. The head lacing are virtually nonexistent. So what? If you have no fear of the dark you will feel right at home here.
