2013 - (bottle says it will improve only for a year, so...) pours a muddy amber/brown with tan head with decent retention. aromas are caramel and toffee with fruity esters. plums, dates and raisins and lots of spices. as expected some oxidation and some vinousy aromas. tastes very sweet with lots of Xmas spices. caramel, toffee and very bitter. body is medium full, carbonation moderate, with rich texture and significant astringency. Heavy bitterness and astringency carry into a long finish. - a very strong brown ale indeed. not necessarily my thing.

Appearance Is dark brown, clear. Frothy white head. Aroma is pretty light. Cinnamon, toasted barley. Taste is bready, a little spice, a bit dry like a sherry. Feel is very thick and creamy for a non-stout. A nice holiday beer, somewhat nondscript, but tasty.

Maybe I left this one a little late.....2013 offering. Says to age up to a year to improve in bottle. Well, either ways i'm digging it! Fine mix of bready malt and festive spices. English toffee and brown sugar with a hint of cloves and allspice. Gushed out with a brown cream head. Smooth finish to it.

I just cracked open an 08Oct13 bottling on February 10, 2020, and I think this is as good as this beer has been since about a year after bottling. Maybe it improves for longer than 1 year?
I actually still have about half a case from this bottling and I've had a few of these over the years and never really liked them much since about 2014, until now. It's finally good again.
One word of advice, pour slowling into a glass and leave the last yeasty ounce or so in the bottom of the bottle.
Pours a reddish, brown color with a soft, fluffy head. Delicate, soft mouthfeel. Strong malt backbone with bready notes and hints of caramel, toffee, nutmeg, mulled wine, and stewed plums. Chalky, long finish that lingers.

2013 edition, 12 oz bottle, poured into a pint glass
Appearance: Pours a pretty, cloudy, dark mahogany color with a quarter of a finger of off-white head that quickly dissolved into a thin lacing of foam that partially covered the top of the beer.
Aroma: Lots of toasted malt, brown sugar, dark molasses, clove, cinnamon, dried fruit, such as raisins, prunes and apricots.
Taste: Toasted malt and hops compete for the primary flavors up front, but are mellowed out by some nice toffee and brown sugar-like sweetness and notes of clove, and cinnamon.
Mouthfeel: Medium-bodied with some good carbonation to tickle the taste buds. With an ABV of 8.3%, I’m surprised that there’s not more of an alcohol presence on the palate. I mean there’s some alcohol heat there, but, it’s not as strong as I’d expect. It’s pretty well managed.
Overall: Another excellent beer by Goose Island, and another great Christmas beer to celebrate Christmas! Great, strong notes of beautifully balanced malt and hops, and sweetness.

Served from chilled 12 oz bottle into chilled nonic glass.
Murky brown color with off white foamy head. Trace amount of carbonation bubbles dancing in the glass.
Aromas of roast malts, caramel and Worcestershire sauce.
Sadly, the taste followed the nose painfully close. Good mouth feel and decent carbonation for a beer of this strength. Everything else however was not appealing. What does goose island brew this thing with; soy sauce?! It has an unpleasant taste of heavy molasses. My local beer monger noticed I enjoyed the taste of festivity ale and recommended sixth day as a better version of festivity. He was way off! I don't know if the flavor changed because the bottle he sold me was a 2012 vintage. Good thing this brew is no longer in production. Awful!
