2011 vintage, just procured.
A: Pitch black pour with a chocolate brown head. Almost no head to speak of and fades away instantly. Obviously no notable lacing.
S: Tons of bourbon. Toffee, caramel, molasses, brown sugar and a touch of vanilla. Some dark fruit like raisins, plums and cherries. Just a tad bit of roasted malt, mostly drowned out by the bourbon.
T: Ahhh there we go. Up front the luscious bourbon comes through as mentioned in the smell, but now a boatload of roasted malt. As the boozy toffee/molasses/caramel concoction dies down, then come the rest. Wonderfully bitter coffee and chocolate mixed with the dark fruits. Mocha stamps the tongue and lasts well into the aftertaste. I taste a little brown sugar in the aftertaste sometimes too. Surprisingly balanced given the almost pure bourbon smell, and especially the freshness of the bottle. As it warms, the stout becomes stronger and the bourbon becomes just a big bite up front and a complimentary flavor in the middle.
M: Thick, creamy, and in a word - big.
O: This is a seriously good bourbon barrel stout. I don't know how I've gone all these years without trying it. It's huge and bourbony but well balanced at the same time. Very complex, lots of roasted malt flavors as well as dark fruits and then there's the bourbon characteristics. Taste something different every time I sip.
