Poured from a bottle into a snifter.
A - Pours an inky, opaque, deeply dark brown, with a wispy half-finger dark tan head that dissipated very quickly. (Not surprising for the ABV) Only the faintest hint of lacing.
S - Wow. Powerful aroma of prune, bourbon, smoke, wood, and molasses. One of the best aromas ever.
T - WOW. Sets a new bar for complexity. Burnt marshmallow, raisin, date, bitter chocolate, smoke, hickory, heavy cream, vanilla, toffee, caramel, anise, and a hint of plum and black cherry. The balance between the sweeter chocolate/dark fruit notes and the bourbon/woody esters is PERFECT. Boozy in the finish but the flavor is still peaking, making the heat divine rather than distracting. Amazingly, stupendously good.
M - More amazingness, as it's somehow chewy, creamy, oily, and syrupy all at the same time. Low side of medium carbonation. Pretty much the perfect delivery system for the flavor profile and ABV. Warming finish was much enjoyed on the cold, rainy night I sampled this gem.
O - Seriously, this is THE best beer I have ever tasted. If there was a way to score it a "10", I would do so. How they manage to get that much bourbon, wood, and "heat" into a beer and STILL have it balanced with sweetness is pure wizardry. I feel my taste buds may have been ruined...I cant even imagine drinking another beer in the same evening. It's THAT good.
