I've always enjoyed Goose Island beers. I have found them to always be consistent and fairly priced in my area. You can't beat the IPA ,and the Nut Brown is great in my opinion. With this background, I figured that the Bourbon County Stout would be great, but maybe along the same lines as a "normal" Goose Island experience. Boy was I wrong.

I was lucky enough to pick up a bottle at From the Vine for $4.50. Might have to pick up a 4-pack or two for aging.

When I cracked open my bottle, I was met by some very strong alcohol. The appearance of this beer is magnificent. Nice swirling black goodness and a grey pillowy head. The first taste of this beer was intense. I was met with lots of alcohol (maybe a bit too much for my tastes), some real big coffee and vanilla flavors, and a nice sweetness. Who spiked my beer?? This beer has a lot of alcohol flavors, and while it seemed a little bit over the top for me at this time, I bet with a little age to mellow this monster out, it would be even better. Don't get me wrong! This beer is fantastic! And after it warmed up considerably, it was even better and more complex.

A great beer, but definately a sipper! Take your time with this one and enjoy the craftmanship.

Appearance - rich, dark, oil as it pours. Very thin caramel colored head.

Smell - BOURBON!!! Some chocolate and licorice as well. Quite complex

Taste - WOW is this one rich and delicious. Chocolate and a strong Bourbon finish

Mouthfeel - even @ 15% this one is quite smooth

Overall - This beer is one of a kind, but I cannot wait to try the other BCBS variants now! @ 15% this one sure is boozy, so be prepared to share.

Bottled 10/15/13. Extremely dark with a caramel-colored meniscus. Huge sweet nose that you detect anywhere near the glass. Taste is very sweet (almost cola sweet) with some booziness. The flavors and booze are intense and really soak and coat your mouth while enjoying, and well after the sip is done. Swishing it around yields different sensations everywhere, and the flavors extend well into the throat. I get sweetness and booze, some dark roast, oak, dark fruits, coffee in the finish. As intense as it is, everything fits so well together. After years and years of enjoying this premiere beer, it has become a flavor unto itself that I would just call BCS goodness.
