2008 vintage. Huge thanks in order to all involved in sourcing this beer: My wife for trekking to Heritage Liquors on Beer Geek Day despite not knowing what in the world she was looking for, and the guys at Heritage for taking a special trip to the cellar to find one. This has been a Holy Grail beer for me, very excited.
Pours an ebony dark, with very little head, and even less carbonation. It's deep. It's dark. It's contemplative.
The smell is intensely bourbon, with plenty of malt, fruit, and a hint of vanilla. The bourbon is a great, warming smell. Awesome.
When i put it to my lips, call me nuts, but I think I picked up on some bourbon! Actually, it's not just SOME bourbon, it's an absolute donkey punch of bourbon. I am on fire. The bourbon wipes out pretty much any competing flavors save for a figgy dark fruit flavor. I like bourbon. I like bourbon in my beer. But I am not used to being so thoroughly bitch slapped by it.
Mouthfeel is glorious, smooth, thick, deep, with no carbonation slowing me down.
At the end of the day, this is surely a damn good beer, but it's too one note with the Bourbon for me to give it a great mark. A-. But I do think that with some vanilla or coffee to cut the bourbon, this would be truly spectacular. I guess I need to obsess on the vanilla or coffee versions of BCBS.
EDIT 12/26/12: OK, I've had enough of this beer now to reconsider my ratings. Still a wildman in terms of bourbon, but a rock solid A beer.
