Pours the deepest brown possible. I look at it and can tell it is not black, but for the life of me I don't know why. Head pours with a red tinged brown. A unique color in my experience. Head dwindles to a tan ring around the glass.
Smell is really quite deep. Good fudge. Like you'd get in Mackinac Island. Dark roasted coffee beans, vanilla, molasses and of course bourbon. No real heat detected by me in the nose.
I'd have a hard time coming up with a better tasting bourbon barrel aged beer. That fudge hits first with dark chocolate and a creamy vanilla character. Tastes like warm triple fudge swirl ice cream with a bourbon sauce. The chocolate and vanilla notes play back and forth. Bourbon taste is an element in the overall profile and not overpowering. Remember ice cream soup as a kid? This is the adult version bottled. A slight warmth on my tongue from the alcohol which is well hidden.
Mouthfeel is creamy smooth with a nice carbonation that cleans up for the next sip. Thick.
Highly drinkable. Slowly.
