Appearance: This is among the thickest looking stouts on the pour that I have tried. There is a slight amount of dark tan head that forms during the pour, but it quickly reduces down to almost nothing. This beer looks pretty good from a thickness standpoint, but the lack of retention and lacing is disappointing.
Smell: As soon as I start pouring I can smell hot bourbon wafting up. This is the 2010 version so that's not surprising. There is roasted malts, bitter chocolate and espresso coming up in waves, but it is all overlayed by that sweet boozy bourbon smell.
Taste: Roasted malts, chocolate and coffee up front. Lots of boozy bourbon on the back end. The roastiness and the booze stood out to me much more than anything else. I'm a fan of bourbon so I liked it, but I usually look for more balance than I found here.
Mouthfeel/Drinkability: Very full bodied, one of the heaviest bodied beers I've tried. There isn't a lot of carbonation and it leads to a slick mouthfeel that is pretty good. Could use a touch more carbonation. This is a 13% ABV beer and definitely a sipper, but it's a good one. I will be looking to age a few of these. Should be outstanding once it mellows a few years.
