this is an aged 12-oz. bottle of 2012 BCBS, ten-months-old. it's much smoother, sweeter, with much less astringency than it had last year. There's still almost no head to speak of, poured into a snifter. It looks like soy sauce with some floating bubbles. I might have said it smelled like soy sauce, or at least chilled soy sauce. Then I realized the aroma was tart plum, fruitcake, and moist spice cake. Wow. The aroma is beyond imagining.

Update 8/28/13
I'm beside myself (even if my less craft-beer-minded guests are non-plussed) with how amazing an aged BCBS is. The most astonishing surprise here is a distinct peppermint stick aroma.

Update 12/23/13

Can you say "Port Wine"? My wife just asked me what I would think if tasting this without knowing anything of its provenance or vintage. I tried to imagine it, and I think, F-ing port wine that somehow has the mildest carbonation.

This is a bottle of 2012, so 18 months old. I'm a bit drunk, now, having had an Ale Asylum Mercy and an 8% ale I won't mention (it was terrible; ok, it was Kentucky Bourbon Barrel Ale).

I can only say thank God I've got four more 4-packs in the cellar. This is the shiznet, by all standards.

A: dark as hell motor oil, great legs, thick

S: a lot going on here, roasted malt, oak, bourbon, biscuits, chocolate, a hint of vanilla, booze

T: big wow factor here, the malt in the front followed by chocolate , biscuits , oak, then the bourbon and the booze somewhere in between it all, impressive at 14.9 ABV that it doesn't dominate just contributes wonderfully

M: real thick , slick, oily, coats the mouth. I Fully dig on this, but it is not for the faint of tongue

O: superb even though i am a bourbon drinker i find a lot of bourbon beers undesirable, not so here, this is bourbon stout done with love, hard to find, worth the hunt

Had my first BCBS '13 poured from a 12 oz. bottle into a pint glass

A: Murky pitch black, head fizzed loudly and dissipated quickly

S: Heavy bourbon on first smell, hard to differentiate the others, could get a little malt, slight chocolate.

T: Very sweet, and hot. You definitely get the sweetness amplified first and then the bourbon warmth after. Too sweet for my liking.

M: Very creamy and smooth, light to no carbonation

O: Was not a big fan of this beer. I enjoy the other variants moreso.

It tastes like soy sauce. I'm not complaining, My favorite two beers are Rogue Imperial Stout and Hercules Double IPA. I'm just saying, it tastes like soy sauce. Good mouthfeel. I gave some to my 21 year old daughter and she said, "It tastes like soy sauce." It's good rich barley. Lots of alcohol. But I'm just saying. It tastes like soy sauce. :) There was no head. I poured it into a snifter. Decent dark smell. It reminds me of Marshal Zhukov's Imperial Stout, which I like. I'm glad I had it, but I won't buy it again due to the price and the lack of head and lack of lacing. Cheers.

Pours black with a small brownish head. Head goes away very quickly. Leaves little as far as lacing. The smell is all bourbon with a slight hint of chocolate and malts. The taste is very smooth with great bourbon flavor followed by that very slight chocolate kick. Mouthfeel was on the thicker side. The bourbon def stays for a bit. Overall this is a great beer. Great beer to just sit back and relax with.

2013 Vintage

Appearance: Virtually black with a modest dark beige head that faded to a ring. Nice looker.

Smell: Bourbon, brown sugar and some mild oak notes.

Taste: Bourbon, brown sugar, mild roasted malt notes, mild vanilla, and some mild oak notes. The beer finishes with Bourbon notes, roast malts notes and mild tannic oak notes. Very good tasting beer.

Mouth-feel: Full- bodied with a modest level of carbonation.

Overall: Back story; back in 2008 I had a 22 0z Bourbon County Stout in my hand at a store that I put back on the shelf because I thought $14 was kind of a high price to pay. Shit, craft beer has definitely changed from those days and I longed to have access in So Cal to Bourbon County once again. This was the year and the beer did not disappoint. Today's price is almost that for a 12 ozer but damn this is a good beer. Here's to hoping the pipeline to So Cal opens up even more so I can have continued access to this gem.
