2013 offering.

First of all, my plan was to buy a 4 pack, drink one, and save three for later in the year...Thanksgiving maybe...Christmas. Well, I've failed.

One left after tonight...I'll probably bring it down to San Antonio to share with my dad next weekend.

Anyway...

Pours pitch black...a thin tan ring remains throughout. No lacing.

Smell is all bourbon, dark fruit, vanilla, chocolate and everything good in the world.

Initial taste is bourbon...but there's so much more to this beer. A smorgasbord of flavors on the table here...all matching the scent and then some

Incredibly smooth. Just stupidly smooth. So warming. So good.

Yes it's expensive. And yes, it's totally worth it if you want to experience a world class beer.

I've actually had this as my avatar for awhile, but have never reviewed it - grabbing a bottle from 2012 for this review...

Appearance - A strong pour into a large snifter gives a brief dark cinnamon cap which quickly dissipates. A brief swirl reveals "legs". Color of the body is a deep and completely opaque black - light doesn't even pass through the sides of the glass. There is no lacing, but at 15% ABV, this is to be expected, so no faulting for this, it is expected, and appropriate for such a big beer as this.

Smell - Even after 2 years, the nose begins with bourbon and oak at the forefront. I'm also getting some molasses, dark toffee, bakers chocolate, a touch of vanilla extract, and a trace of roasted malt and rich soy sauce.

Taste - Oh my goodness... when I had this fresh the bourbon was forward and somewhat "in your face" - but after two years the rich "stout" flavors are much more prominent. Let me try and break down the transition - the first flavors are extremely rich roasted malt, some dark fruits like black cherry and ripe plum, and a bit of raisin. Dark chocolate quickly coats the fruit, along with moist oak and vanilla. Then as the sip nears the back of your throat the bourbon starts in the back and reaches forward, complimenting and enhancing all of these flavors. After the swallow you are left with bourbon warmth, vanilla bean and oak remain on the tongue, with traces of rich chocolate covered fruits and roasted malts in the mouth corners. Heavenly.

Mouthfeel - Full, heavy and rich - mouthcoating. Carb is extremely light, and lends a silky smooth light foam, as if a bourbon infused chocolate mousse were melting across your tongue. A perfect and contemplative sipper, as different flavors will play highs or gently recede as this beer warms. Let it - take your time with this - you will be rewarded.

Overall - If you enjoy bourbon and stouts, then this is an absolute must. In my opinion, this is the bar by which this style should be rated. If you come across this beer, go ahead and try one fresh - but do yourself a favor - cellar the rest of them, at least a few 4-paks. As with most imperial stouts, age is a wonderful thing, and will allow all of the flavors to mellow and mature. The only possible "knock" I could possibly give is for appearance, but you're not going to get a big frothy head and great retention on a 15% ABV beer. With that said, I will not penalize it for something it can't be, and I'm giving it all 5's. I may be a bit biased as I enjoy a good bourbon, and I love impy stouts... and this is nirvana.
