Bottled on 11 Oct 13 (#1217) poured into snifter.

A: Aggressive pour. Oily, pitch black liquid. Half finger dark tan head recedes quickly. Lacing is good.

S: Lots of bourbon off the nose. Dark fruit, bit of wood, and alcohol. However, the bourbon is the most dominant aspect.

T: Roasted malt and chocolate up front. Bourbon soaked raisins and prunes after. Lots of bourbon, but very estery, as well. Minimal hops and bitterness. A bit cloying toward the end with a final shot of bourbon and fruit. Touch of alcohol and the end with a burning going down the throat.

M: Light carbonation, slightly more of a watery body than you'd expect. Alcohol is definitely present. Not hard to drink, but commands to be sipped.

O: I don't like the base beer, but the bourbon aging helps it out a bit. A bit too sweet and cloying after awhile. Could do with a bit more bitterness, less esters, and a bit more body.
Overrated, but still good.

A - Black syrup, rocket fuel, motor oil, etc. Almost no head even when served warm and poured aggressively.

S - My only rating that may fall lower than average. I had a hard time smelling any complexity, only bourbon and a sweet raisin/chocolate smell came through. It probably doesn't help that we are making chilli and the whole house smells of it.

T - First sip let me down, but every sip after that was pretty damn good. I really like the bourbon notes and sweet aftertaste. I hope some of the additional flavors come with aging.

M - Just as thick feeling as you would expect based on the pour.

O - It's a really good beer, and I'm lucky enough to live close to the source so that I can continue to try it each year. I look forward to tasting this 2013 bottle sometime later in 2014.
