Was happy to see this offered at a local store. Had some high expectations given its spot on the top 250 beer list, but was also cautious because of the high-alcohol content. I was hoping it didn't power the ratings and wouldn't overpower the beer.

The pour was on point, with a little less head than some stouts, but given the ABV, not unexpected. The nose has obvious bourbon, but the dark roasted malt smell is also there. There's also notes of brown sugar and oak.

The taste starts with a twinge of alcohol heat, but the backbone is roasted malt with some semi-sweet chocolate and honey mixed in (in my re-review, I actually get a decent taste of coconut!?). The taste is pretty smooth throughout, well balanced. There's a little tartness that appears in the background, reminding me oddly of a tart apple.

I did thoroughly enjoy the beer. The bourbon/alcohol tastes were present, but not overpowering (I noticed these less in the re-review). The roasted malt nature of a stout is not lost, and the balance of these things is well done.

I know it's only been a month, but on my second try of this beer, I enjoyed it even more. It's sweetness (chocolate/honey mentioned above) appealed to me, and the overall beer seemed smoother. One month is not aging, but the difference in my impression of the difference in tastes is as if the beer had done just that.

Just a tad on the boozy side, so it doesnt quite hold up with some of my other favorite stouts. Perhaps better aged as I had the 2013 bottle.
