Always a fan of the Tripel and this is a fairly representative one. The only off note here was the finish, which was strangely bitter. Other than that, satisfying, and a beer I'd drink again. (191 characters)

On-tap at Goose Island tent/bar at Wisconsin State Fair:

Pours bright golden with a creamy, lasting white head. Plenty of lacing sticks.

The smell is of bubblegum, banana, citrus and peppery spice.

The taste is of bubblegum/candy with banana and citrus. Peppery spicing in the finish.

It is very creamy. Alcohol is well-hidden, though it does give it a nice touch of black pepper.

A very well-made, well-balanced trippel. A hoppier version of the style, though it maintains a pleasant sweetness. (500 characters)

On tap, poured into a snifter. The aroma is a mellow, tropical and grassy note with a dark spice to it. Some undertones include a light floral note, and some cookie dough comes in late. It pours a brilliant orange yellow and is topped by a dense, white foam retaining a wispy surface, moderate ring, and a moderate-light lace. The taste is a combination of medium high sweet with a medium level of bitter. The sweetness gets stronger and bitterness wanes as it warms. The beer is thick and oily with a soft fizz carbonation and a medium full body that's tropical and spicy with additional notes of banana and cookie dough late. It finishes zippy with a spice kick followed by sweet citrus and light bread. The aftertaste is a clean, fresh spice. (746 characters)

A good balance of bitter, tart, and sweet. Refreshing, summery. Like a flower from a field plucked along the journey of the mind that finally found its heart inside of a fart. (176 characters)

Pours cloudy bright orange color with a 2 finger creamy bright snow white head that was full of tiny bubbles and faded slowly, leaving excellent foamy lacing and a foamy layer on top. A really good looking beer in the chalice.

Smells of lemon zest, orange peel, coriander, yeast, spices like pepper and cinnamon, and strong citrus hops. The bottle says it's brewed with Gold Saaz and dry hopped with Brewers Gold Citra hops and they come through beautifully in the nose, which leans towards an APA and away from a Triple but smelled great to me. Not traditional smelling, but I found it very enjoyable.

Tastes of caramel, bubblegum, yeast, grapefruit, lemon, citrus hops, candied sugar and biscuit or lightly toasted grains, then the second wave is banana, coriander, pepper and other light spices, dry floral hops, sour green apple, tea leaf or old dry weed, wet cardboard, dry chalk and a little alcohol like a rubbing alcohol. Pretty hoppy for the style which I like, with nice grains to play well with the yeast and earthy notes, it was well balanced and easy to drink.

Mouthfeel is creamy and smooth with very mellow/mild carbonation that's on the thin side with a medium body and a slightly bitter finish that's semi-dry with grains, yeast and one last kiss of citrus sending it down. My mouth felt dry after 30 seconds.

Overall I really enjoyed this one. Again, it was not traditional and anyone looking for a carbon copy of a Belgian Triple will be disappointed, but if you want a hoppy American interpretation of a Belgian style Triple then this is your beer. I'll definitely have this again as I found it almost sessionable as it hid the 9% ABV pretty well. (1,672 characters)

A: clear; medium gold in color; 1+ finger white head that receded slowly to a thin cap; very nice, thick, lacing;

S: clove is pretty pervasive; hints of citrus and dough in the background;

T: a combination of clove and dull citrus; the citrus intensiifies through mid-palate and begins to fade again toward the lightly bitter finish;

M: light to medium bodied; highly carbonated; light dryness in the aftertaste; ABV is well hidden;

O: the combination of styles - tripel and American IPA - didn't mesh well for me in this instance; I do like the concept; (559 characters)

A year old and quite an interesting, bold brew. Clear yellow with some sediment in the bottle. Modest head and lacing in the Stella Artois glass. Inviting funky aroma.

This is so sharp and zingy, it's easy to forget it's a Tripel. Light dry fruit. Pears and that sweet wheaty note, followed by the yeasty Belgian drying effect. The hops seem quite bold at first taste but fade after some sipping.

This is actually quite delicious. If it was still around in six-packs it would be a regular purchase for me. Would like to try it fresh. Maybe AB-InBev is compiling a list of successes such as this one for the final assault on craft beer. From the 12 oz bottle purchased at Bottleworks in Seattle. (697 characters)

A bottle cellared for a year, citrusy on the nose and pallet. Sediment in the bottle, whether that is from the aging or the bottling or brewing I don't know. No boozy taste and rather smooth. A big fan of the Belgians and keeping this in the cellar was well worth the wait. (273 characters)

I'm opting to serve this into a goblet, not Goose Island's recommended nonic pint, because - hey - it's a Belgian tripel.

9% ABV. "Dry hopped...Belgian Style Tripel." 35 IBU.

BOTTLE: 355 ml. Brown glass. Classy label design. Branded black pry-off pressure cap. Bottled: 11APR2014. Acquired from Duff27 in a trade. Thanks!

No bubble show forms as it's poured.

HEAD: 1 finger wide. White colour. Soft-looking, with a mellow complexion and an even consistency. Retains nicely, leaving a nice ring of lacing on the sides of the glass before receding fully after about 4 minutes.

BODY: Murky hazy gold with copper hues. Nontransparent. Translucent. Has no visible yeast. Seems unfiltered.

Looks nice for a tripel. It's not mind-blowing, but it hits the fundamentals.

AROMA: Has a lovely doughy yeast profile, with hints of biscuit and clove. The hop profile is surprisingly fruity, with New World hop notes of faint mango, tangerine, and citrus. Has a honeyed malt backbone filled out by Belgian pale malts and touches of a raw wort-like sweetness. Its 9% ABV is nowhere to be found, but the yeast doesn't seem all that highly attenuated; if anything it evokes more of an Abbey ale yeast profile than a high gravity Trappist.

No, it's not quite a traditional aroma for a Tripel - its hop emphasis, hop character, and yeast profile are atypical - but I find it appealing and interesting. Mild in terms of aromatic intensity.

I find no off-notes or overt booze.

TASTE: The raw ripe fruity hop notes dominate to its detriment, and fail to cover up the obvious alcohol presence. Ripe notes of mango, melon, rindy citrus, and tangerine come off warm in their tropical booziness; even off-putting pineapple is suggested. The honeyed malt backbone amplifies the booziness with its unwelcome sweetness. Why isn't Belgian pale malt the main malt flavour? Where is the Trappist yeast to eat all this sugar? This lacks a basic Belgian/Trappist feel, coming off anything but traditional. Overhopped, imbalanced, and a bit of a boozy mess, The Ogden falls apart upon tasting in a way I could never have predicted merely from experiencing its aroma.

Average duration and intensity of flavour. Shallow depth of flavour. Lacks subtlety in its execution. A subpar build for a Tripel.

There's no subtle spiciness to it, nor is there any intricate layering of flavour. This can't hold a candle to the best traditional Belgian paragons of the style.

TEXTURE: A biteen syrupy. Definitely too thick/viscous. Overly full-bodied, with an off-kilter overbearing heavy presence on the palate. The opposite of the delicate fragile texture you'd find in a great Tripel. Definitely boozy and warm. Has a raw feel on the palate somewhat redolent of unfermented wort. Problematically overcarbonated. Suffice it to say overall presence on the palate is subpar.

This mouthfeel doesn't feel well-tailored to the taste, nor does it elevate the beer as a whole. Fails fundamentally at fitting the style.

OVERALL: Its booziness and overly sweet taste really hold it back in terms of drinkability, and its strange hop emphasis - while charming aromatically - just plain doesn't work in the taste. The fundamental lack of a guiding Trappist yeast puts the final nail in the coffin. I'm not sure what they were after with this one, but the result is a beer I'd never want to buy again, and I think it's telling that this is still quite warm even after a having year of aging to mellow. Far from Goose Island's strongest work. I wouldn't recommend this to friends or trade partners.

Dry-hopped with Brewers Gold, Citra, Serve in a nonic pint. {Why not a tulip?} 9% alc./vol. We dropped our Belgian style triple to balance spicy, tropical flavors with a unique Belgian yeast, giving it a bold, more complex palate."

Appearance: bright golden hue, clear, vast snowy white head. Looks fantastic.

Aroma: Ah. Fresh and lively, straw, citrus, spice, and Belgian yeast character. Everything you want, and then some. A little sweet, a little heat, a bit of spice, alright.

Taste: Mmm! Hits you right away, an authentic, true taste of a Belgian triple. The lightly peppery spice, a touch of coriander, perhaps, a good dose of citrus, light fruitiness, with a light body, and excellent, despite the high ABV, drinkability. Delicious. Tasty. Right on the money. Damn, if I don't like this one. They're doing it, man, they're doing it right.

Bottle dated 3/24/14 so this is over a year old. We shall see...

I ignored the glassware suggestionn on the bottle (hey, I don't HAVE a Nonic pint glass), but that's a clever marketing ploy AND helpful to those with glassware choices. I used a pint glass. Seemed to work OK.

Pours a murky straw/gold color with a solid eggshell-white head. Lightly carbonated, full-bodied, and quite drinkable. Huge citrus sweetness morphs into spiciness, then a little hops bite at the end. Alcohol is present but not overwhelmingly so.

Overall, it was OK but not something I'd seek out again. (It's retired, so I guess that's kind of a moot point.) I guess I'm just not a big fan of the Belgian style. (699 characters)

Review taken early Fall 2014.

12 oz brown bottle with a beautiful golden label. Artwork is actually quite nice. Back label specifies to enjoy The Ogden in a Nonic style pint glass and though I've never seen a brewer recommend a belgian style ale in a Nonic I gave it a go anyway. Poured into my Goose Island nonic pint glass.

A - straw golden yellow with hints of light orange. Clouded and belgian style funkiness to the body. Head pours nice in the Nonic pint and leaves very good stick.

S - bready malts and an belgo style yeast. Sweet banana with clove spice. Maybe a hint of juicy peach as it warms with a hint of alcohol booze and more belgian spices. A very American take, but still a solid aroma.

T - flavor wasn't quite as lovely as the nose, but the same notes applied. A nice belgian style yeast paired with breaded malt. Sweet fruitiness with black pepper and clove spices.

M - medium bodied and pretty drinkable given its size. A decent texture but lacks the thickness for me personally. It's there just not enough of it. But still a nice mouthfeel.

O - A very good take on this Belgian style. Not the best, but Goose Island has taken and tweaked it to their style. Something I'd definitely go with again. (1,227 characters)

Pours an opaque deep gold producing 3 fingers of fluffy, moderately lasting, white head that leaves scattered stings & motes of lacing. Aroma is Belgian yeast funk that damn sure suggest Brettanomyces; doughy pale malts, banana, peach, clove & a little alcohol. Taste is similar to the nose but more boozy with a juicy, sweet start & middle, becoming peppery & finishing with slight hop bite & transitioning to a dry, lightly bitter & astringent aftertaste. In the finish there is a thin phenolic quality, something akin to acetone & Band-aides. Alcohol becomes more noticeable as the brew warms & definitely adds to the spice & bitterness. Mouthfeel is medium bodied with moderate carbonation, wet & juicy up front, slightly prickly with a somewhat dry & drawing aftertaste. (776 characters)

Straw to golden in color. Big citrus on the nose...grapefruit is prominent with hops in the background. Taste is mildly sweet with carbonation followed by a light body consisting of citrus, cloves, and hops. Finish is smooth with a slight hoppy aftertaste. The alcohol is surprisingly hidden. Fruity nose – not big. Pours brilliant gold under a 1” foam cap that perches up over the rim. Has a citrusy, orange, grape melon palate lightly sweetened by caramel with a hint of bubble gum. Medium body and carbonation. (224 characters)

Pours a three finger white head that stays forever leaving a good lace. Crystal clear pale straw color. Good carbonation and medium bodied. Not a fresh bottle, as this was bottled back in march of 2014....oh well.

Pours hazed tangerine, with a nice looking off white tiny bubble head, film and raised collar, leaves some slippery fine sheeting.

Fruity nose with melon and lime.

Soft and near creamy on the tongue, this is highly fruit infused brew with more melon, lime and other tropical sensations. Tasty and yes fresh tasting. Less carbonated then the typical Tripel.

Yeast fueled nutty final pour. Yum yum yum

Great with some nuts, dried fruits, bread and cheeses

Highly enjoyable...got get some (568 characters)

Have had quite a few of these. Mostly because got a good deal on some older ones but at 9% not worried about having some age on it. A lot of white sediment in this light golden brew with a thin finger of quickly dissipating white foam. Yeasty sweet in the nose with just a hint of distinct citra. Taste has plenty of alcohol go with a nice malt taste and some yeasty orange like sweetness with a kiss of citra. Unfortunately the booziness and sticky aftertaste ruins this one for me. Has some good qualities but it's not much else than a quick buzz. (549 characters)

Pours a cloudy, gold color. 1/4 inch head of a white color. Good retention and decent lacing. Smells of citrus hops, pine, sweet malt, slight yeast, grass, slight alcohol, hint of wheat, and hint of floral notes. Fits the style of a Tripel. Mouth feel is smooth and clean, with an average carbonation level. Tastes of alcohol, sweet malt, slight yeast, slight grass, hint of floral, hint of hops, and a hint of spice. Appearance - deep golden color with nice lacing around the glass.
Smell - A mixture of hops and a scent of alcohol.
Taste - Tangy on the tongue and then that warm feeling as it pours down the throat.
Mouthfeel - I drank this at room temperature and it felt warm on the palate with a slight bitterness.
Overall - A fine brew that I'll drink again, not an everyday drink for me, but a decent tripel, especially if you're into Belgian beers. (439 characters)

A: This poured a cloudy light gold with moderate white head.
S: It smelled like pine and grassy hops and some unripe apricot, with honey biscuit and sweet candy sugar
T: It tasted like grassy hops and tart white grapes, with some pine and honey biscuit. It had a clean sweet and sour aftertaste.
M: It had a smooth full body with subtle natural carbonation.
D: This was a really nice and fairly unique tripel, with enjoyable scent and taste. It had a great body and smooth finish, so it was easy to drink. Probably not for aging, but solid fresh. (546 characters)

L: No real head, just thin lacing. Hazy darker yellow
S: Floral and fruit notes were much stronger than expected
T: Somewhat spicy, a bit sweet and definitely boozy. They aren't harmonious, though.
F: Pretty strong alcohol heat right up front
O: Was kind of weird and unbalanced. I thought this beer may have needed some time, but the bottled on date was 17 months prior. The flavors did not meld together at all (413 characters)

A: The beer is clear yellow in color and doesn't have any visible carbonation. It poured with a quarter finger high white head.
S: Moderate aromas of spicy yeast are present in the nose along with notes of fruit.
T: Like the smell, the taste starts up with some spiciness but then transitions to having some notes of tropical fruits. Some hints of candi sugar are also noticeable.
M: It feels light- to medium-bodied on the palate and has a moderate amount of carbonation.
O: This tripel is well balanced between the flavors of spicy yeast and tropical fruit hops.
