Single bottle (bottled on 02/09/10) poured into a shaker pint glass.
Appearance: Poured a nice light tan head that lasted the whole way down. Plenty of lacing too. The beer is a dark brown on the table, but definitely has garnet notes when held up to the light. Plenty of bubbles coming up slowly through the beer when held up to the light.
Smell: Chocolate notes and a hint of honey along with a definite cigarette/smokey smell towards the end. Odd - the smoke is a bit off-putting.
Taste: Nice malt up front and then a balanced hop bitterness right after it, but then there are tobacco notes towards the finish. The aftertaste is like the smell of cigarette ashes - quite acrid. I'm not getting the love here although towards the end of the glass that aftertaste is not as strong. Still, I'm not liking it.
Mouthfeel: Plenty of carbonation on the tongue, nice thickness but not too thick.
Drinkability: I heard this beer was now going to be no longer bottled so I hunted for it and got a bottle, but I'm not sure how I feel about it. The appearance is great, but it smells/tastes like someone was smoking when it was brewed. Maybe it is meant to simulate a smoky English pub. I'm not getting it though. The description sounds so good on the bottle but this is, sadly, a disappointment.
