Presentation: 12oz brown screw top (ugh) with classic Goose Island label and bottled on date clearly stamped (5-18-11). Props to Goose for clear dating.
Appearance: Poured into a NB globe (I don't have a Kolsch glass, sadly), this poured a somewhat hazy straw hue, with a nice ivory cap which showed nice retention.
Smell: Crisp, light grainy malt and wonderful notes of lemon and delicate, herbal hop. Simple, but fresh, clean, and inviting; this seems like it's on the way to being a great summer beer.
Taste: Light grain notes, with a fleeting ghost of something toasty, and lemon and lightly herbal hop notes. The flavors mirror the aromas almost perfectly. It's light on the palate, with a clean finish. Slight sugar-cookie sweetness through the middle, but ends off-dry.
Mouthfeel: Light side of medium-bodied, medium carbonation
Overall: Some may argue that this is light on character, but I'd have to disagree. While it's definitely straightforward and uncomplicated, the flavors are clean, refreshing, and interesting enough to make you want another sip. This (along with a couple of saisons) has to go on my 'best summer brews of 2011' list. Well done, Goose Island.
