On-tap at Murphy's Pub in Champaign, IL; 3.25/pint.
Lovely golden body, not cloudy but thick and somewhat opaque. Quarter-inch head -- soapy at first, thickens -- with more lace than a French whore.
Smells a little hoppy, subdued yet distinctive. Comparable to a weiss, but much less intense. Carefully done. The flavor, too, mimics a hefe without the (often overpowering) gumball notes from the yeast suspension. An initial (and surprising) banana yields to mild citrus, and a quick hop finish.
This beer doesn't linger. No wash-out, just clean and controlled. Reminds me of Tucher, but much more integrated with lighter banana. Zen-like balance of thick pale malts and mild hops combine to make a lightly fruity, medium-full-bodied brew.
Heavy in the mouth, the sweet malts are a hammock upon which the most delicate of hops swing in the summer breeze. Goose Island Summer Kolsch is a cunning beer I would love to drink all day.
The on-tap pressurization weds the elements in a summery ocean marriage overlooking the setting sun and probably cures most of the criticism the bottle has recieved. I'm not much of a Goose fan, but this is a solid, confident beer.
