Poured from a 650ml bottle into a goblet, served at cellar temp. Bottled on date is 05/16/12.

Brilliantly clear Mahogany shade of amber with little sign of carbonation supports a thick khaki head that leaves virtually no lacing.

Aroma of caramel, prunes & raisins, with a faint whiff of vanilla.

Mouthfeel soft, creamy, silky.

taste: cloves, spices, rum soaked raisins and vanilla with some sherry flavors. a little boozy and hot at the end with a touch of woodiness at the end. I am drinking a 2012 late in 2013 and it is magnificient.

I love this beer. Really love this beer.

Pours a medium brown with orange tint with a nice creamy looking head that leaves a nice sheet of lace behind,bid phenolic smoky/spicey aromas with a touch of bubblegum.Flavors are quite yeasty and spiced,cinnamon and cloves with some plum and lingering smokiness in the finish.Very yeasty but bot overpowering in the spiciness even a little soft,well made and enjoyable and quite quaffable for the alc%.

Appearance - This one poured a dirty brown in color with a nice, moderate head that left some nice Belgian lacing on the inside of my Chimay glass.

Smell - The rich, buttery malts dominate this nose. I can pick up a bit of chocolate and maybe some gooey kind of sweets like toffee from a Heath bar.

Taste - The chocolate turns very bitter at the taste. Otherwise, the tongue reflects the nose. It's the rich, buttery toasted malt that stands out.

Mouthfeel - This ale is a bit bigger than medium-bodied with some decent carbonation.

Drinkability - This is a "wow" beer that really wakes you up on the first sip. It's a bit rough around the edges, which I like but isn't for everyone. It's probably a good cellaring candidate but enjoyable as is.

Update - I missed the '06-'09 vintages but had a chance to try the 2010. It has mellowed a lot over the iterations and I noticed that the ABV went down from 9.0 to 8.0. It lost a lot of the harsh character that I noted five years ago which is great although I though this year's effort lacked proper carbonation for the style. All in all still a very good beer.

Spotty thin head with dotted carbonation and a dark amber body. Rummy, with raison and dates. Rather vinous at the base with a slick fruity middle, and warming spicy finish. Medium but rich bodied. Rather strong in the alcohol department and therefore quite warming. Leaves a candied sugar sweetness lingering long after each sip. Decent but barely justifiable of the price. Cool bottle and story though.

2009 pours a deep, clear amber with a light, thin head that doesn't last long.

Banana pudding on the nose from a distance, plum, bready yeast, alcohol, ripe berries, and spice.

Fruity flavors of cherry and raspberry, cola, and caramel. The dried fruit flavors come out more as it warms, but so does the alcohol. It's not hot, but definately warm.

Well made, might be a little young still.

Bottled on 04-16-04. Pours from the bottle a tantilizing deep amber red with a nice off white head...mmm. The smell here is a mix of fresh baked banana bread, candied fruit and caramel sweetness. It's good for the nose.

First swig hits home with a big caramel malt upfront swirling with banana bread, candied fruity sweetness and spice. A bit of the horse blanket comes through from the yeast...overall a worthy example of the style.

Mouthfeel is richly creamy and chewy...body is lovely. Drinkability is damn good as well. A tasty, complex dubbel brewed in the USA and by Goose Island no less....makes me proud to be from Chicago :-). Definetly worth a try and a bit of age does it some good!

A_Pale amber pour with a small white head that dissipates into a thin ring. Not much lacing.

S_Banana,clove and alcohol. Very faint on the nose besides the booze. Not very enticing aroma.

T_Very bland and bitter. Follows suit with the nose except I'm picking up a medicinal taste. Spice alcohol dominates.

M_Pretty thin and flat.

D_Wouldn't want more than one.

Very disappointing brew. Ill try again just in case I had a bad bottle.

In a goblet this beer was a reddish brown color with a small light tan head.

Mostly a caramel aroma. Some sweet fruit, and a little hint of vanilla.

Caramel and toffee taste. Plum and pear. Still the nudge of vanilla. Yeasty.

This was a sweet, medium-bodied dubbel. Easy to drink.

A - Red/brown with an off-white head.

S - Apples, pears, yeast, and alcohol.

T - Apples, cinammon, caramel, spiciness from the yeast, wood flavor, and alcohol.

M - Medium body with a fair amount of carbonation.

O - This has a lot going on with the nose and flavor profile. These are mostly good things. The alcohol come through nicely in both the aroma and taste and balances out everything else that is going on.

Presentation: It was poured from a brown 12oz bottle into a tulip glass. The bottle reads Pere Jacques 2009 and it also has a "bottled on" date of 10/05/09.

Appearance: The pour only produces a small off white head which fades out quickly leaving a rich reddish amber liquid naked and exposed. Only a thing ring of lace remains around the edge of the glass. This lacing is slick and sides down the glass as I drink leaving nothing behind.

Smell: Its aroma is very sweet, estery and malty. It is a touch phenolic and boozy as well with nice notes of caramel malt, over ripe fruit, sweet bready yeast and raw sugar.

Taste/Palate: To start there is a very sweet rich malty and boozy brandy-like base full of caramel, brown sugar or Belgian candied sugar like notes. From there each sip reveals a different estery, fruity, or phenolic flavor note like sweet red apples, peach, apricot, and pear. On to the finish, and now I get leafy hop spice and mild bitterness moving in. Overall though, it remains well on the sweet boozy side in the finish. On the palate it has a medium to full body with a slick sticky texture.

Notes: This is a very interesting and complex beer which I think was still a bit young and could use some time to age.

Nice frothy head atop a mahogney base. Good lacing. Dried fruit, sugars, a nice blend of spices in the nose. Alcohol is still very up front though. Some burnt sugar, cinnamon, nutmeg, pepper, and light bitterness across my tongue. Medium body. Lingering burn

Interesting label for a Goose Island, which tells the story of a visit to a Belgian brewry, where the Abbot, Pere Jacques, let the brewmaster and his friends inside for a tour and a meal of roast duck and wild boar, served with many fine ales, of course. This pours into a goblet a cloudy peach/orange body, with a respectable, tan head that rises to 2 cm, and looks very Belgian. A thick, foam collar is left behind along with some fine sheet lacing.

Aroma begins with apples and cinnamon, powdered with brown sugar. Vinous alcohol is not disguised. Sweet maltiness eventually becomes a bit cloying, especially at room temperature. There is a prominent, Belgian spiciness all the way through, but it does little to moderate the cloying sweetness toward the end.

Overall, a nice effort from an excellent brewery. This ale will probably improve with some age.

12 ounce bottle, label tells me the bottled on date and that this one will improve for 5 years..Good news, but his particular bottle wont last more then 20 minutes...pours medium almond and semi cloudy with a decent amount of floating yeasty sediment. Minor white head and nondescript lacing. Nose is fruity, raisiny, yeasty and quite Belgian in nature. Smooth mouthfeel, very drinkable heady, complex Belgian styled brew. More raisins, yeast, and cookies, alcohol well hidden in the flavorful background. Nicely crafted ale, well worth a try.

Appearance: 1/4 inch head, clear, red/brown in color, high carbonation

Smell: cinnamon and bread

Taste: bread, sweet caramel, and some berry juice.

Mouthfeel: sweet with an alcoholic backbone medium carbonation, medium bodied.

Drinkability: Good for the style. One per session is the max for me, but I would get this again. I do like the fruitiness that is present here.

This is a review of the 2009 vintage, consumed in July 2011.

The beer pours a hazy medium brown color with an off-white head. The aroma is full of Belgian yeast, with some candy sugar and molasses notes. There is also a little bit of toffee and some biscuit malt.

The flavor is similar. I get a lot of sweetness from the malt, molasses, candy sugar and brown sugar. There is also a nice Belgian yeast component and a little bit of dark fruit. The alcohol is also present.

Medium mouthfeel and medium carbonation.

Single bottle from the 2012 batch, picked up at Premier Gourmet in Buffalo.

Poured into a goblet. Deep ruby-chestnut, clear, and with a 3/4 inch head of off-white foam. Survives as a thick ring, generates some flecks of lacing.

Nose is plum, pear, medicinal, sherry, pepper, caramel malt. Nice smelling brew.

Solid dubbel, though not without a few quirks. The fruit flavours are quite nice (pear, plum, grape), but tend to be overpowered by the medicinal character of the brew. Still, nice and flavorful, warming alcohol - a touch hot, I will certainly rereview with an aged bottle or two to compare. Lighter bodied, tart, mid carbonation.

I enjoy dubbels a great deal, and I certainly enjoyed this. With a little bit of tweaking, or possibly some aging, this would really be sublime.

Poured from a bottle dated 1/13/10 1908

a: hardly any head and what was there faded quickly, poured a nice deep reddish color.

s: the fruitiness was evident right away, a nice pleasant fragrance, could not wait to taste

t: it was a mild to strong flavor sense at first that then quickly faded, I was surprised it did not last a little longer, finished sweet

m: very light and clean, good for this style

o: enjoyed the bottle very much, would definitely have more, I would say it is right in with style and better than most out there.

A 12oz. gem of a beer courtesy of the esteemed Mr. AKSmokedPorter.

Upon pouring into my glass, I am rewarded with a boisterous layer of tightly-bubbled off-white lace that is a hefty 3+ finger thick and dies slowly atop the hazy, light copper-colored beer. Aromas a fully entrenched in malty sweetness, with some wisps of fruity esters (bannanas), dark fruit, and toffee. Interesting. Flavor is very sweet up front, with lots of juicy fruit flavors mixed in. Middle sees this taper off, to be replaced by a more balanced chocolate-covered fruit experience. Finish sees more of a doughy/yeasty chewiness with a somewhat palate-drying aftertaste of bannanas. Very well-balanced. Not to thick on the palate, this offers immense drinkability. The ABV is shrouded by everything else going on. I enjoyed this quite a bit.

Pours a see through amber. Very nice smelling. Belgian yeast is very noticeable first and foremost. Smells like a caramel apple. Light hops. Taste is similar. Love the yeast. Very fruity. Dark fruit. Slight tinge on the finish. No dryness. Mouthfeel is light and moderately carbonated. Thickens up a bit as it warms. Solid beer overall. Just became one of my favorites from goose island. Hopefully not just in time for AB to kill them.

A: Once I poured this out, it had a beautiful dark amber tinge, with traces of tan in the light. The head was a nice white to semi-khaki colored and had a steady head ring throughout the glass, although from what I'm currently seeing it doesn't look like it'll do much for lacing.

S: Smelled of a nice assortment of berries/fruit that you'd find in a trail mix... raisins, cran-raisins... etc. However, this did seem to have a slightly overwhelming sweet smell, slightly down-ranked because of it, but overall not too bad.

T: Taste was almost off the charts, the after taste was there too. You really can let this beer sit on your pallet for awhile since it's not overly high on the ABV side. Develops very similar to a wine.

M: Very full for what I thought that I'd be getting, very impressed.

D: Loved it, would do it again in a heart beat... too bad I only grabbed the 4 pack.

Overall, outstanding beer. Kudos to Goose Island on their Pere Jacques... I plan on actually saving one of my bottles to let it age a year or two, and to come back and see if I notice any differential in the aroma and taste.

Serving glass: Poured from bomber into Snifter.

Appearance: Hazy brownish-red that seems to glow from within. Small white head that leaves spotty lacing.

Smell: Dark fruit, raisins, toffee, banana, spice and a hint of alcohol.

Taste: Fruit (both the mysterious "dark fruit" I often taste and banana) and toffee predominately. Also notice some nuttiness and spiciness. The spiciness builds at the end and almost turns a little bit bitter. Turns a little more earthy as it warms.

Feel: The body seems both syrupy and watery at the same time. Moderately high carbonation and almost has a dry spicy finish but the "syrupiness" prevents that.

Drinkability: Nice sipping Dubbel that is pretty good for being made in the US. There are better ones out there but this one is certainly worth a shot.

Appearance: Definitely the biggest let down of the beer, the color is a nice burnt amber, but the carbonation was real weak and the head is gone after a couple swigs.

Smell: The smell is all belgian sweet maltiness, but weak on account of the flimsy head. Notes of caramel and rum soaked raisins.

Taste: The taste is sweet, almost too sweet but not quite, just a wisp of caramel, rum raisin, sweet malt, the alcohol is there, but it's subtle enough, the belgian yeast does some wondrous things, hundreds of years of monks sweating it out in the dungeons. Thanks.

Mouthfeel: Chewy and delicious.

Drinkability: This was one of my first intro's into the craft brew life and it's an excellent example of just that, not as thick or rich as some brews but very drinkable even with the 9% abv. With a nice hoppy ale and a saison or pilsner this could make for a wonderful, flavorful night. Very drinkable.

A-Dirty brown with just a touch of tan head and a fair amount of carbonation.

S-Caramel malts predominate. Sweet and toasty-just inviting a big gulp.

T-Malty upfront end note is hoppy-a little astringent with alcohol bite.

M-A little thin upfront-could benefit from some richness here...too watery

D-Easy to drink, but could benefit from some balancing of malts, yeast, and hops.

O-Not a terrible dubbel-but this one doesn't stack up with some of more tasty versions I've had of this style-not a well rounded beer. To me this beer could use more malt, more mouthfeel, more yeast, and less hop, as well as the alcohol being hidden better. I'll be interested in how this one does with some aging.

5/10/13 update: Back to this beer after 2 years in the cellar...Similar appearance as the freshie but with plenty of sediment. Aroma is a hint sweeter. Ripe grapes predominant now vs. the initial caramel toasty malt character. The taste is like the aroma. Heavy on sweetness which covers up the alcohol bite that was initially present and no astringency here either anymore. The mouthfeel has definitely gotten thicker with just a bit of cloying sweetness. Still plenty of carbonation here. Overall I think this beer has improved with age as it is more like the good Belgians. I'd give it a solid 3.75 now. Glad I held these as I didn't care for this beer fresh. Probably time to drink more. I think it's at it's peak and about to become too sweet and cloying. I'll hold a couple to see.

A: It pours a brilliant ruby tinted amber with a 1” cream coloree foam solar that head that dissipates fairly quickly but clings to the side of the glass.
S: spicy, estery aromas with traces of caramel and alcohol.
T: Yeast driven palate with fruit, rich malt, alcohol, and a moderate hop accent on the finish.
F: Creamy full body with moderately low carbonation and slight alcohol warming.
O: An easy to drink beer that captures the Belgian dubbel style.

12oz bottled on 10/05/09

pours a reddish brown color with an off white to almost biege head. good clarity. not realy any lace. small one finger head off the pour but retains a nice ring.

in the aroma, bananna bread came to mind off the first smell. a nutty sweet malty aroma. perhaps some honey and a bit of cherry. just a touch of flouride like belgian yeast coming through, not enough in my opinion. the alcohol becomes noticable as it warms.

complex tasting beer. sweet kind of nutty malts, rum soaked raisons, cherrys, honey. some spiciness. a sweet flouride like dry finish. slight sourness within, lingering sour grape/cherry flavor. alcohol heat.

the mouthfeel lacked. kind of an overly heavy body, somewhat sweetly astringent. seemed like it had more of an abv. this hurt the drink as well. i wouldnt really want another, too heavy and sweet. sits heavy in the stomach as well. not bad, but the one bottle is enough. i may revisit this in years to come, but im more interested to try GIs other belgians now that ive had it.
