Fresh Growler poured by Jason at Clybourn.

Appearance: Caramel Amber with a nice full head. Good retention on this beer.

Aroma: The aromas that stick out are sweet bready breakfast cereal with cinnamon and other spices. The hoppiness present in the aroma do show through here, they seem to be a bit vegital or piney and they are definitely not coming through in a fruity or citrusy way.

Taste: The first kick of this one comes through full on the tongue, possessing of massive amounts of toasted bready sweetness. The hops burst forth in a reckless manner, but they only balance the flavor of the malt nicely. The hops seem to linger a while on the tongue, long enough for you to almost forget the bitterness between each sip, but not quite. This beer tastes like a "little barleywine". The mouthfeel, sweet bready flavors and the heavy but balanced hopping make this beer taste like it's almost ready to play with the big boys.

Notes: I usually try to consider the style when reviewing a beer. But it seems that the guys down at the brewpub shed all pretenses of style and just made a great beer (the anniversary beer is always an ESB, so they named it such). To be totally honest, I found this beer way more drinkable and enjoyable than most brewpub ESB's. The 18 Year ESB also happens to be one of my favorites available at the brewpub recently.

( Served in a nonic)

A- This beer has a thick creamy light tan head that sits on a chestnut brown slightly dense body. There is a light coming through on the bottom of the glass and no carbonation is visible.

S- This beer has the smell of fresh green hops with a floral and slight pine note. There is a hint of toast in there aswell.

T- The sweet caramel malt flavor has a slightly darker malt hint. The hops are smooth and green with a nice grapefruit note. The beer finishes with a soft spicy grapefruit note and a soft alcohol bite.

M- This beer has a medium mouthfeel with a smooth texture and a faint alcohol heat in the finish.

D- This beer is brewer with 18 lbs of Cascade and Glacier hops with another 18 lbs used to dry hop it. I was expecting huge hop flavor but it was not the case. It taste like a very big malt beer with some nice hops but it drinks very smooth and I think the alcohol at the finish was due to a warmer than usual cask beer.

Pours a light brown hue with an off-white/tan head that delivers a very large amount of sudsy foam and some scattered lace.
Aroma is dominated by citrus and floral hop cones with just a whiff of an undercurrent of light malt. Very appealing smell.
Flavor has a little more malt then nose would indicate but really the story here is with the citrus hop notes. Really enjoyable orange and lemon sort of flavors come out.
Mouthfeel was a little too thin for an ESB and the bittering level probably a bit too low but this is a very approachable brew.
Drinkability is first rate. Almost a Brown ale but the citrus hop profile is very interesting. Good down this one for days on end.

Serving type: on-tap
