Poured into a snifter on 6/23/10
Cherry brown color; very dark in the glass. Two fingers of tan head dissipates, leaving a thin layer & a couple streaks of lace. Wispy retention & hardly any lacing by the end.
Oatmeal Stout's aroma lives up to its name. Oats are well-seated amid mildly sweet roasted malts, cocoa & a hint of coffee. Not much in the way of hops; most likely given the age of the bottle. Inklings of doughy yeast are occasionally noticeable. Burnt overtones.
Greeting the tongue is a subtle hoppy bitterness that has seen fit to hang around. Immediately following is a tasty malt profile. Notes of roasted coffee & oats offer a dryness in conjunction with burnt undertones. Dark chocolate provides a semi-sweet counterpoint. Very smooth all around.
Oatmeal Stout is full bodied & features a nice grittiness. Carbonation is reasonably low; it's spot on for the style & suits my fancy. Roasted & burnt characteristics linger long on the finish.
Drinkability is superb. This is a very well-crafted beer & is a splendid take on the style. Save the appearance, I find little to fault with it. Good stuff.
