Many thanks to my dear friend for the sample. Pours into my totally sweet New Glarus Uff-da Bock nonic a copper red with a thick and everlasting beige head. Lovely aroma of fresh malt. Very spicy. Pepper. Taste has loads of banana and black pepper. Green like fresh mustard greens. Lots of pepper. Wow! Dark and lasting malt flavors. Aggressive carbonation and stinging rye oils attack the tongue. Very drinkable. Very good.

Picked this up at the JewelOsco grocery store on Des Plaines & Fulton in Chicago. Bottled on 11/11/08.

A: Dark brown at the top and more golden colored at the bottom. Nice one finger frothy head. Really nice spotty lacing as the brew is consumed. Every sip revitalizes the head.

S: Nice bready malt with an exceptional earthy, sour, dry rye malt.

T: Very tasty. A crisp, refreshing start that goes into a lovely round bready malt taste in the middle and finishes with a rye sourness that adds a sharp tang on the palette. Not that familiar with this style but I have found that rye is really appealing to me in general. I love how it quenches the thirst. As the brew warmed up, more of a caramel malt joined the action and it was a really nice addition. The combination of sweetness and sourness almost took on a lemony profile.

M: Feels almost medium bodied - so smooth. Full in the mouth but slight tingly carbonation combined with the rye is so nice and crisp.

D: Lovely brew. It's so easy to get carried away with big beers and forget to appreciate the lovely subtleties of milder brews. This is a wonderfully refreshing beer. Perfectly balanced and just right for a session.

Pours ruddy brown with garnet highlights and an inch of creamy off white foam that leaves great lacing. Toasted rye bread with grainy accents. Spicy with caramel tones and a subtle creaminess. A touch of coffee moves into an afterthought of hops.

Surprisingly creamy upfront with big maltiness and caramelized grains. Toasty rye bread flavors that are spicy and clean. Mellow hop bitterness on the finish.

Mouthfeel is medium bodied and creamy. A lot fuller in body that I expected considering the name and ABV. Overall, a tasty session beer that I can drink quite a few of.

LOOK: Nearly clear dark brown, healthy looking head

SMELL: Toffee, herbal, rye, yeast, fresh bread, faint dired plums

TASTE: Caramel, buttery, spicy rye, smooth, medium body, leafy hop, deep toasted grain, mild chocolate, faint raisin, brown bread

Very much a winter beer from look to taste, the rye adds a uniqueness and some depth. I know they are calling it a Mild of sorts but this one would do better with a bit more strength which would amp up the maltiness and fruitiness. We all know Milds can be bigger.

12 ouncer, bottled on dating on the label. Pours clear darker amber, light tan head that leaves real nice, fine well developed lace. A touch of chocolate, light winter spice and toasty bread in the nose. Smooth, eminently easy drinking, session able offering. Light spice, toast, mild rye and lightly roasted malts. Nice stuff. Pleasant winter sessioner.

Appearance: 1/4 inch head, hazy, tan in color, moderate carbonation

Smell: big caramel malts and rye

Taste: pael malt, caramel malts, and rye in moderation throughout

Mouthfeel: medium/light bodied, medium carbonation, sweet start with a dry rye tasting ending

Drinkability: One of the best Goose Island beers I have had. I can really taste the rye, yet it is not overwhelming. I like how it combines with the pale malts. I could easily six this one.

A: Brilliatn orange/red hues with a creamy off white head that sticks around for about half the drink.

S: Substantial toasted notes. a nice malty sweetness as well as some dark fruit esters

T: moderately toasty with a touch of roasted malt. there is a good malty sweetness. There is a real spicy character (rye) here as well. Firm bitterness to balance the sweet; no real hop flavor. There are dark fruit esters throughout and the finish is sweet bordering on too sweet.

M: medium body, smooth, very sweet finish with an alcohol warmth

D: for me this was a great beer that just finishes a little to sweet to be highly drinkable. good complexity of flavor though, and I really enjoyed it. I suppose a winter beer isn't designed to allow you to quaff a six pack. I am enjoying this pint while watching the snow pile up to around a foot and a half which seems to help make this beer better.

A: This beer, was consumed by myself and my friend at Beck's on The Hill in Cedar Falls, and was in a pitcher before entering a pilsner glass. The color is a dark amber with hints of brown, producing a fairly white head, but the head itself had sort of a amber tint.

S: This is one of my favorite things about the beer, and I noticed it once I poured it into my glass. I got the strong smell of egg nog which I'm assuming is the dark rye used in the brewing process coming out.

T: The taste was absolutely brilliant with a nice, almost sweet finish.

M: Mouthfeel was off the charts with a nice little shimmer on the pallet to really brighten the flavors.

D: The drinkability was superior to other winter ales I've tasted, and would drink it again in a heart beat.

Overall, outstanding beer, almost wish it was around all season. I've always thought that Goose Island brewed some mighty fine beers, and after Matilda, this would be my second favorite. Cheers.

Serving glass: Poured from bottle into Nonic Imperial Pint.

Appearance: Clear bronze with thin white head and nice lacing lines. Fairly unique color.

Smell: Spicy rye, light chocolate and dark fruit, and a slight nuttiness.

Taste: Light chocolate and toasted malts, with some dark fruit and a nice spicy twang from the rye.

Feel: Relatively low carbonation, light body but also quite smooth and "English". Slightly dry finish but not a typical dry finish due to the rye.

Drinkability: Ridiculously drinkable for a Winter seasonal. I don't have much experience with Milds, but I prefer this one over the few others I have tried.

Poured right from the bottle with a VERY dark amber colour. Cream coloured fizzy head that died down; it didn't last more than a few sips. Nothing overpowering in the smell of the taste of the beer, except maybe a slight burnt taste/smell. No predominant malt or hop taste... pretty average. Slightly bitter aftertaste.

Would I buy it again? Probably not.

Poured from 12 oz. bottle into a Sam Adams perfect pint glass. Bottled on 11/23/11.

Appearance: Pours a deep and clear amber copper orange with a good amount of rising bubbles. Decent two finger off white head with good retention. Moderate amount of lacing clinging to the glass.

Smell: Sweet and bready caramel malts and wheat grains with some hints of toffee, rye, and nuts. Also some subtle hints of dark fruits and floral hops in the background. Smells pretty bready and good.

Taste: Very bready and grainy like the smell. Caramel malts blend with some notes of toffee and nuts. The rye taste is really big here and lingers through the finish and aftertaste. The hops also are fairly strong providing a nice balance to the bready sweetness. Very good taste.

Mouthfeel: Medium bodied with a moderate level of carbonation. Sweet but finishes spicy and somewhat dry.

Overall: Pretty impressive for a "Mild" beer. The rye adds some great flavor. Good balance of bready sweetness, spice, and bitterness.

A 355ml bottle with a BB of Nov 2012. Purchased a few weeks ago from my local beer specialist. As this weekend has seen the coldest weather of the winter here so far, I thought I'd consume this in anticipation of a swift improvement.

The label says to serve in a Willi glass. As I don't have any suggestively shaped glassware to hand, a Sam Smith's pint glass will have to do. A hazy coppery-red hue with low carbonation. Forms a decent head of creamy off-white foam that lasts for a couple of minutes before reducing to a surface layer. Aroma of sweetish, earthy malt with a sour hint; notes of grain, caramel and yeast.

Tastes of sweet caramel malt with a mild bitter finish. Notes of rye, grain, caramel, sugar and dry yeast esters. Slightly sour. A whisper of aromatic citrus in the background, and faint stewed hops. Mouthfeel is thick and smooth; great body. Subtle tingly carbonation. Aftertaste of sweetish, grainy malt.

Rather nice - a satisfying winter beer. Many winter brews I've tried have been notably lacklustre, so this is a pleasant change. Subtle, well-balanced flavours and a fantastic body for the style. The ABV is a tad high for an English mild, but this is very drinkable. Recommended.

Bottled on 12/4/08 this beer is holding up great, I thought it would be a mess after that much time. Appears a deep ruby caramel muddled hue with a light off white head forming thick with my vigorous pour. Lacing is even and fine and forms nicely with each sip from my tall 1/2 liter Willi glass used per direction. Aroma has a nice warming cereal grain sweetness about it, like walking through a specialty grain room when you tour a brewery with an edge of spicy rye in the finish. Barely a hint of herbal hops in the background, I'm sure when this brew was fresher there was a bit more hop aroma going on. Flavor has nice roasted malt layers with bread and subtle hazelnut and creamy milk chocolate tones, think nutella. That layer of spicy rye really adds to the complexity, along with the bite of herbal hop additions bitterness is at a minimal but overall flavor is good. Mouthfeel is light to medium bodied carbonation is mellow and naturally smooth. Drinkability is great one that I will look for this coming December hopefully fresh, our local Goose Island wholesaler has been sending old product to all of the retail stores. This came in last week, and earlier this summer we got one year old Summer Kolsch and 312 Wheat along with continuously dated IPA and Honkers this is bad for craft beer.

I like the handsome bottle. Goose is always kind of classy looking. Ahhh, let me think, Mild Winter is an ok looking beer. A nice soft translucent type of beer, and it smiells nice.

Taste: I can say many nice things about this beer, but the finish falls down for me. Goose brews are often on the hoppy & rye side and bitter. Admittedly I love the sweeter maltier brews. Mild Winter rides with a mild watery bitter, almost anti-sweet finish as you swallow. The swallow is soft and nice, just bitter.

If IPAs are your thing, then go for this. This brew maxs out on the hop rye side.

So what complements this bitter ideal? I would ask you one little thing. What goes with a bitterish beer for these little bitter beer lovers. I might suggest go with some dark folk music like Townes Van Zandt or Greg Browns Songs of Innocence and of Experience or Covenant. If you're more into jazz then go with Ran Blake all the way.

A- This beer has a slightly dense brown body with a red glow and a creamy light tan head that last a good bit. There is a gentle carbonation of bubbles gliding to the surface.
S- The aroma of fresh toasted dry malts has some spicy rye notes to it and a biscuit malt note in the finish.
T- The dry lightly toasted malt flavor gives way to a spice malt and biscuit note in the finish. As the beer opens up there is more of a caramel malt flavor but still dry. The hops in the finish compliment the rye spice with a soft green herbal spice flavor. M- This beer has a medium-full mouthfeel with a tight little fizz finish.
D- This is a nice crisp beer that is malt forward with some good depth from the rye and nice support from the hops.

The color is a deep brown with a reddish tint and lots of clarity. The head poured out pretty compact and took a good while to dissipate. Some solid lacing is left behind in patches.
There's a caramel malt with a little bit of a floral bouquet. Some spices are definitely present along with grains. I didn't know this was a rye when I picked it up, which explains what that aroma is. I detected it straight off, though, and while it's not in the foreground it sort of sets it off.
This one is firmly backed by a strong malt, followed by the rye and grains. There's a little bit of a dark fruits note and a strong bready/toasty/biscuit flavor as well. Hops are not missing in this one, but they're certainly only here for balance and most prominent in the finish, which works really well for this brew. Spices round this one out, being steady but not overpowering. A nutty flavor lingers.
This one's got a medium body with a semi-dry finish that lingers. Carbonation is light and a good balance of crisp and smooth increases drinkability.
If Great Divide can make a rye Oktoberfest, who's to say Goose Island can't make a rye winter ale?

Bottle poured into pint glass

Appearance: Dark amber with poor head retention. Even after trying to swirl the brew a bit the head quickly dissipated into nothingness.

Smell: Nice sweet malt and a grainy rye scent.

Taste: Crunchy grain malts, probably from the rye, along with toffee and a butter-like end. Very well balanced. I had this before and I wasn't fond of it at all, in fact I remember giving the rest of the six pack away. This is a nice surprise.

Poured into a Sam Adam's perfect pint glass. I am reviewing this probably a little after its prime so I will give it bonus points on categories I find lacking.

A - An easy to moderate pour yields about a half finger of pretty fizzy brownish head. The halo sticks around pretty well and there is some lacing. Body is red-amber in color.

S - Smells lightly of dark roasted malts.

T - As with the nose, it has a nice amount of roasted malt. It is biscuity and sweet up front. Finishes a little dry and smoky, but is great for the style.

M - Medium bodied and sticky. Light on the carbonation.

O - An easy going winter ale that's great for a cool night by the fire.

Clear russet brown with glints of copper. The ecru head is high, dense, and enduring.
Note of brown sugar, green raisins, cinnamon, and a notable rye peppery doughiness. Only a twinge of dry, leafy hops.
It enters the mouth with more of that brown sugar, as it immediately dries towards roasted almonds and cashews. A vague, dehydrated peach note lurks in the distance. Rye step forward with bready, prickly, pepper and spice notes. A resurgence of honey-roasted nuts, then the finale of earthy, tobacco-like hops.
Light-medium bodied, fluffed up a bit with a rolling carbonation.
Admittedly, I'm a bit of a sucker for all things rye, as such, this will be a go to winter sessional henceforth.

A rye not a mild, recent bottle. Refreshin with that rye edge. Moderately pleasant aroma, arising from a medium yellow body topped by good amount of bubbled head. Lace follows through. Very drinkable, refreshing. Warms the body on a cold night.Average mouthfeel, a little edgy but smooth.Drying aftertaste.

A - Dark brown, slightly hazy, and supporting a nice sized khaki head.

S - Nutty, yeasty, and a little spicy. Smells like a good brown ale with an emphasis on nuts and spice (from the rye?).

T - Again, brown ale malty flavors with an emphasis on walnut notes and a nice accent provided by the rye.

M - Medium bodied, malty, an mellowly carbonated.

D - A really nice winter beer. The flavors complement the dishes of the season, and the woody-nutty flavors put fireside evenings in mind. Pretty good stuff!

A - very dark brownish amber with a thin, white lacing of head

S - faint grains, very faint metallic notes

T - caramel, toffee, faintly nutty, mild bitter finish

M - medium bodied, smooth, lightly carbonated

This is a rather simplistic beer. It has decent flavor with a very malty presence. This is a beer brewed to style with caramel and toffee notes and lower, sessionable ABV. This beer has enough flavor to keep one interested throughout a session, but there isn't much here to set it apart from the rest of the crowd. I'm glad I tried this one once, but I won't be seeking it out again.

Goose Island seems to have stepped up their brewing in the last couple of years, and this is another triumph. This rye ale is an attractive deep amber with a rich foam and a fruity, biscuity nose. So far seems enticing! Taste is a surprisingly smooth and spicy, with a hint of clove. Subtle and tasty, this one's definitely enjoyable.

Appearance: Decent look overall. Dark brown with a nice layer of foam and lacing throughout. Pretty thick so it's hard to see the carbonation.

Smell: Nice sweet and tangy smell. Fresh rye bread with a peppery bite to it as well. Molasses and brown sugar as well. Very weak hints of coffee.

Taste/Mouthfeel: Mouthfeel is very smooth overall. Kind of reminds me of chocolate and syrup. The taste is great! Initial heavy maltiness from the rye. A very crisp and sour aftertaste that's actually really enjoyable.

Drinkability: Very relaxed beer to drink.

Overall: A good low maintenance drink that's pretty unique.
