A Belgian style pale ale blended with hibiscus and kombucha tea, Fleur is a beautiful, rose-colored ale with an aroma of strawberries and hibiscus flowers. Flavor balance starts with a hint of sweet, ripe berry and finishes tart.

Beer pours a nice shade of honey with rose-colored highlights. Visibly, the consistency appears mead-like. It's hazy, cloudy, and slightly viscous. The initial 1/2 finger white head fizzles out to nothingness pretty immediately.

Smell is of sweet-tart fruits and a light, warm graininess. It is toasty, fruity, and slightly herbal.

At the forefront of the taste is a ton of tart fruit - sour lemon and cherry, and wine-like tannins. The beer is sweet, but not overly so. Good hearty, crispy grains provide a toasty balance to the bold flavors, and a nice floral/herbal hop comes across mostly in the finish. Feel is highly carbonated and provides a nice, rounded softness to the overall beer.

This is a very smooth beer; very subtle and flavorful. It drinks immensely easily.

2011 vintage, enjoyed thanks to Mike. Surprisingly, this one gushed a bit upon opening... not bad for a two year old beer, I guess. Pours a staggered mix of gold, orange, and amber, and seems to really stretch the gradient wide. Mild sediment floats around in a beer topped with surprisingly almost no head, especially for being so lively upon opening. The white ring lasts for about half the beer before fading into nothing.

Hmm... very musty, cellar-like, and dirty, but almost in a somewhat unintended way. It seems as though time has not been as kind to this brew as you'd expect. Sofie, Lolita, and Matilda have faired much better, it seems. Nevertheless, it doesn't smell bad, just a bit out-of-kilter towards the funk and musk side of things. There are some lightly fruity undertones, apples and grapes, that spice things up a bit.

I was a little shocked to see the exclusion of Belgian yeast on the nose, but it's actually the first thing I can taste when I take a sip. Lots and lots of chunky Belgian yeast on the palate with some hints of light, rotten banana and spiced clove. Cherry tartness is present and snaps at the tongue along with the lively carbonation... Still wondering why a beer with this much CO2 refused to produce any sort of head.

Big bubblegum flavors come out, again from the yeast, and is met with a heavy-handed amount of funk. Musky, funky, dry cheesecloth, and big-time reminders of cobwebs and dirt. A slightly chalky mouth feel and taste is a little off-putting, but nothing unmanageable. I feel like this beer would have been great fresh, but with two years on it, it's deterred to "just okay". Thin-medium bodied with almost no alcohol presence detectable.

I really hope Goose Island decides to make this one again someday, as I've never had the chance to try it fresh, and I think it would be much better without any age. Even with two years under the belt, it was far from awful, but I couldn't help but think of how time had taken it's toll on the brew - all of the "could-have-beens". Seems strange, though, as the rest of Goose Island's line of Belgian-style ales handles time like champs.

Bottled 2/26/11

A - Pours a hazy orange with red /pink highlights. Two fingers of white foam don't linger long, but leave some lacing behind.

S - Slight tartness, some fruity florals and a bit of Belgian yeast funk. Subtle but nice.

T - Taste is also quite subtle, with quite a fruity presence, some florals, faint lemon tartness and earthy funk. Taste is light and refreshing with just enough depth to keep it interesting.

M - Mouthfeel is pretty light, with a bit of earthy dryness on the finish.

O - Not my favorite BPA from Goose Island, but still pretty good. Definitely better suited to a warm summer day than a cold winter night.

Bomber, $8.99 at DeCicco's in Ardsley, NY, Bottled on 5-21-10 according to the lower right side of the label. Pours hazed dark reddish tangerine, under a quickly departing medium khaki head, goes to a thicker and blotchy film, collar and leaves low lying and slippery bits and strands of lace. Bold Belgian yeast and spice infused nose. Phenolic, cloves, coriander and ginger come to mind. Tasty and quite enjoyable Belgian pale. Fruity, spiced up, yeasty, with a moderate slightly sour note tossed in. Complexity is the result. Nicely done, more enjoyable beer from G.I.

Bottled 5/21/10. Consumed 4/25/11.

The beer pours a hazy orange-amber color with a white head. The aroma is very nice. I get a lot of brett notes, with some funk and a little bit of leather. I also get some nice cherry notes as well as some floral notes.

The flavor is also very interesting. There is a lot of juicy cherry notes mixed in with the leathery and funk brett notes. There is also a little bit of biscuit malt, but the beer is very dry and easy to drink.

Medium mouthfeel and medium carbonation.

Serving glass: Poured from bomber into Chalice.

Appearance: Very bright copper-amber with frothy off-white head that leaves some nice lacing. Almost a hint of pink.

Smell: Sugary, musty and tart, with peach, citrus and a nice floral quality.

Taste: Somewhat earthy, floral and tart. Light berry, citrus, tea and pepper adds to the mix. Overall, a light but somewhat complex flavor.

Feel: Moderately high carbonation with a light body. Dry finish but a strange sweetness cuts it slightly.

Drinkability: Drinks like a lighter cross between Matilda and Juliet, but not quite as good as either one. However, it is nicely refreshing.

A: This is copper to amber in color with a 1 finger rapidly dissipating head.
S: estery aromas with some floral in the nose, after the esters, malt.
T: There is a little malt and fruit at the start but it finishes with a spicy, herbal, floral under taste
F: Medium to medium light body, medium high carbonation.
O: It is very refreshing. The herbal spiciness goes well with the carbonation and the hops. It kind of adds onto the malt and hop flavors – you can tell the floral is there but it is not overwhelming.

22oz bottle split with 2 other friends poured into a standard pint glass. bottled on 9/17/10.

pours out a deep reddish orange color with a one finger of white head that faded to a nice retentive 1/4 inch of head. cloudy with a bit of sediment.

lots of acidic, funky, musty brett is mostly noticable. behind that there is sweet malts with a very light herbal note.

again acidic, funky, musty brett at the forefront, almost grape like sweetness with a very light herbal bitter finish.

a nice sweet tart medium body, good feeling carbonation.

drinks very nicely for a brett beer. one of the few that i could prolly drink bottle after bottle of. i would definatly get this again, highly recommended from me. i also would love to see how this would age.

Poured from a bottle into a wine glass. Vintage 2011 w/ ABV of 5.2%

Appearance is somewhat cloudy amber with a rim of strawberry color.

Fruit on the nose. Flavor is mellow with a hint of tea. Starts with some sweetness and ends tart.

On the take home scale, this is a unique beer and worth sharing, but not my everyday choice. So yes for a special occasion or to share with someone who is a adventurous beer drinker. I'd pick up one for variety

A- The slight dense amber body has a thick head that fades to a thin film and is supported by a sea of microbubbles.
S- The slight floral sweetness has notes of cheese rind and a dry floral tartness to the finish.
T- The light floral yeast flavor has a dry brett note with some white wine flavors to follow. The finish has a dry hibiscus bite with a red currant quality and a noble hop flavor that blends in. There is a dry field corn note that lingers a bit in the finish.
M- The light mouthfeel has a crisp texture and no alcohol heat.
D- This beer has some nice tripel qualities and a soft subtle tartness from the hibiscus for depth. Good drinkabililty and it would be interesting to see if the brett notes really come out as this beer ages.

Appearance:
Beautiful red hue ale with a decent bubbly head. Really all of Goose's belgium style Ales appear beautiful in the glass.
Aroma:
The hibiscus and kombucha tea hits you right away with some berry fruit notes....very fragrant.

Taste:
This is an odd pour its 1 part pale Ale, 1 part Argo Tea and 1 part sour lambic. Overall there might be just too much going on here for me to fall in love with it. The alcohol content though is well hid. If I had had it on a hot summer day, it might have been more appropriate.

Mouthfeel:
Very wet and fizzy, a bit of a tart finish. Overall very good feel. The flavor is intense on the front end but quickly fades.

I had this on tap from the Holy Grale in Louisville, KY. This was an aged 2010 version enjoyed on Jan. 31, 2013. Pour into a snifter.

A - It was dark in the room but looks to be a copper or a med/dark red Pencil head. Lingers for a few minutes.

S - Flowery, hibiscus really comes through, also nice scent of berry. really nice and light.

T - light strawberry and hibiscus. A bit sour. Makes me think of summer and sitting in a warm breeze on a porch.

M - Enjoy the sour. viscosity is med/high.

O - Real nice summer brew. Real mellow. None of the fruit is empowering. I would purchase this again - if it wasn't retired.

Pours to a amber colored topped with a quickly dwindling beige lace. Lacing is average at best.
Cranberry nose with traces of brett-like peppery suede funkiness (either from the kombucha or actual brett), black cherry, dried peaches, honey, and cider. Along with a big, late florality from both the hops and the hibiscus. It's one of the most distinct and delicious smelling beers I've come across in a while.
It enters the mouth with honeyed apples and a backing graininess. Fruit enters via cranberries, cherries, and peaches as it begins a sweet/tart tug of war. Funkiness adds pepper, lemon rind, overripe melons, and old leather. It concludes with a nearly resinously sticky sense of flowers, influenced by the hops and the hibiscus.
It's medium body feels a bit lethargic and fat as the carbonation quickly dies off.
It's clever enough to inspire analysis, while still being relatively drinkable, in spite of the CO2 struggles.
Nice enough as it is, but I have a hunch that a little age might help the flavor catch up to the aroma, or at least let the bottle conditioning repair the carbonation.

Enjoyed on tap at The Hunt Club. An interesting one, sourness derived from the herbs and wild yeast. Medium mouthfeel. Light brown, with some lace. Cloves, sourness, the whole thing didn't work today, it has many ideas, some of which I do not like here.

2010 Bottle of GI Fleur - Label says that it can develop fro up to 5 years in the bottle.

A- Hazy redish orange with tiny, tiny bubbles forming a tall head that slims down to next to just a thin layer
S- Thick smell of begium yeasts and flowers. Some tartness coming through too.
T- This beer seems to be front loaded. Intense carbination, tartness and classic belguim characteristics up front, but fades to almost nothing. Maybe a light floral aftertaste, but that's it... like it wipes the slate clean with each gulp.
M- Very fizzy up front and thin in the back

O- Glad I gave it a crack, but I wish the flavors lasted longer... its and nice ride, but a short one.

Appearance: Pretty rose-amber color. Foam, lacing, and carbonation are all good.

Smell: Fairly floral and sweet. Herbal and raspberry-like. Good balance.

Taste/Mouthfeel: Tastes like it smells. I get a decent amount of kombucha in the background. Definitely some caramel sweetness also. This really has the acidity and fermentation of kombucha tea, giving it a great, crisp mouthfeel. Yeast and kombucha definitely go great together.

Drinkability: Very refreshing, summery, and versatile.

Overall: Wish there was more fruit to balance this out, but I did enjoy this immensely.

Bottled 2/18/2011

A - Pours amber to red with a slight white foamy head. Visible carbonation rising to the surface.

S - Smells of berries and flowers. Reminds me of an air freshener. Not too strong though, so its pleasant.

T - A fruity tartness of strawberries that has a spicyness. Not sure how the kambucha tea factors into this, but the combination is nice. The belgian yeast gives it a raspy acidity.

M - Rakes the tongue as you drink it. Light bodied, though the carbonation is present.

O - Enjoyable. I was able to try many of the GI offerings at a sampling this weeknd. This was one that I brought a bottle home to have this evening.

Poured into a tulip (I seem to be favoring that one regardless of the brew.)

Somewhat disappointed. Maybe I got a bad bottle? Really light flavor, kind of skunky even. The head disappeared instantly, no lacing left behind.

The appearance might be the highlight for me. (Not a good sign.) Nice amber yellow look with a lot of floating sedimentation.

Sessionable for sure based off the light flavor, it's just not that memorable.

I see it's retired... glad to have tried so I know I'm not to broken up about it...

Fleur is a copper/bronze color. It's a little hazy, and has orange and gold highlights with backlighting. A soft white head covers it. It only rises to a finger or so in depth before falling quickly. Very little lacing remains. Eh. It's not bad.

The nose is pretty impressive. The first whiff reveals a Brett-laced funkiness. It's a moderate, restrained funk (which just happens to be my favorite kind). Musky and earthy notes resonate throughout. It's somewhat fruity and floral. The fruity side features apple, pear, and berries. I suspect the floral scent is the hibiscus. Smells a little malty and sweet. Alcohol is not noticeable in the least. Smells good to me.

The flavor is very good. Pale malts and fruit strike first. Berries seem to be more prominent in flavor, but apple and pear are noted. There is an interest floral flavor that must be hibiscus. It adds an interesting flavor to the overall mix. It complements the other flavors well. Brett definitely adds a funky fresh flavor. It's moderate, but its effect is powerful. Overall, it's very earthy, musky, floral, and funky. Belgian yeast is noted, but is a little light for my taste. More would be better. Alcohol is masked well. Finishes musky, funky, and fruity. Good stuff.

Fleur has a light to medium body. Carbonation seems active, but never feels substantial. It's crisp, but goes down smooth. Drinkability is very high. This is one tasty beer. I'm really enjoying it. It's damn refreshing and very approachable at only 7% abv.

I'm really impressed some of these Belgian inspired releases from Goose Island. They could be confused with authentic Belgian releases. Fleur is a nice Belgian Pale. It's a little unique given the hibiscus presence, but it's a nice addition. Works really well with the restrained Brett flavor. I could go for a little more Belgian yeast, but that's a small gripe. This is good stuff. Grab a bottle or two if the opportunity arises. You'll be glad you did.

22 oz. bottle poured into a tulip glass. Bottled on 5/21/10. Drank on 2/24/11.

Appearance-Amber to copper in color. Very clear. Moderately large off white head with decent retention which collapses to a rocky texture with some lace.

Aroma-Sour and brett aromas are really starting to come out. Some grainy malt with light toasty caramel notes, underneath a mild and pleasant brett aroma-cidery, tart, horse blanket. Light floral aroma.

Flavor-Biscuity, grainy malt forms the foundation of the flavor. Similar to aroma, there are tart cider vinegar notes, barnyard, horse blanket musty flavors, a nice, subtle earthyness, and a slight floral overtone. Elegant, complex, multi-layered, and delicious.

Mouthfeel-Medium body, medium high carbonation. Smooth, just a touch of alcohol warmth and a light sting on the tongue from the acidity.

I had this beer several months ago and I was relatively unimpressed, though that was a relatively young bottle. This bottle, at about 9 months old, has really started to show Brett character, and has evolved into a lovely, complex beverage.

A: Apricot hue with a huge, foamy head with good retention; lacing is okay

S: Strawberries, apples, pears, bananas, pineapple--this is a fruity bouquet of awesomeness; somewhat of a grainy backdrop with some subtle peppery, herbal notes

T: Fruity and yet dry--the strawberries are very prevalent but so is a banana and apple quality from the yeast; some bready malts at the heart as well; some grassy, herbal, flowery, weedy flavors shining through the finish as well

F: Effervescent carbonation up front with a creamy texture on the back end

O: Such a nice beer with a refreshing fruitiness that complements the Belgian yeast and bready, toasty grains

Appearance - Crystal clear copper body, which is weird for a BPA, but I've already guessed this isn't your average BPA. Almost no head. Some bubbles, but nothing sustained. No lacing either. Disappointing.

Smell - A bit more familiar to the BPA smell, but no hops. A hint of yeast and some fruity smells I can't quite place. Smells tart and reminds me a bit of a Flanders Red in aroma.

Taste - Fruit flavors in front and some Belgian sugar flavors. Not really sweet, but the residual flavors are there. I don't know what hibiscus tastes like, but the flavor reminds me of rose water. A little bit astringent and just... flowery. Tart all the way through, but it comes through when the other flavors fade.

Mouthfeel - Very light. In fact, the flavors drop off and the finish tastes like nothing by astringent water. Like rose water, really. Drinkable, I guess, but I'd like the flavors to hang around.

Overall - Not bad. I feel like it tastes good and then suddenly tastes like nothing. It's half a beer, but the half it has is good.

Picked this up at Goebbel's in Wichita

Pours amber with a sliver of sand colored head. Great clarity, near zero, head retention or lacing

S: Sourness & grassyness, some apple peel notes

T: Follows the nose, some pear & apple peel notes as well. Some grassy hop notes as this warms, white grape,pears & peach shine through as well, along with a touch of shortbread & white pepper. Finishes fruity, peppery, dry with a touch of pineapple & a whisper of white pepper

MF: Medium bodied, slick, low carbonation, great balance

Very easy to drink the 7.0 ABV is well hidden. This would be a bit pricey to session on, but If I could, I would on hot days (like today)

This beer pours a beautiful rose color with light frothy head.

Aroma is very floral with a hint of strawberries.

Taste is almost opposite of smell. Sweet berries up front with floral undertones. The beer finishes with quite a tart punch that lingers. Light bodied.
