2010 vintage. Pours a translucent amber/garnet with a loose head that dissipates towards the shoulders. Nose expresses cherry notes, reminiscent of cherry Sucrets. Taste follows nose - some oak and vanilla notes; very Rodenbach-esque. Mouthfeel is light-medium in body with an even carbonation and an acidic bite. Overall, nice complexity on this beer. Quite tasty for six years old with just a hint of vinegar beginning to come out.

Bottled 06MAR14: A well aged 2014 bottle, pours cloudy reddish chestnut brown color with a nice 1-2 finger foamy tan head that was full of tiny bubbles and faded slowly as it was hissing and dissipating, leaving no lacing anywhere to be seen.

Smells and tastes very much the same: tart and sour up front with toasted grains, dark cherries, red wine, oaky notes, funky yeast, fruity notes like raspberries, brown sugar, white wine like a pinot grigio, tart green apple, musty, earthy aromas and the general confusion of the brett and Belgian yeast strains which I assume were used. The nose is more old basement, farmhouse and musty while the flavor brings a lot more wines of all colors. The barrel aging has a huge and extremely flavorful impact on that taste, with mild alcohol, peppery spices and a raspberry or strawberry vinegar influence that ties in some heat, more spices (like coriander) and both sour and bitter flavors. It's wonderfully complex, getting better as it warmed - this bottle seems like the wine had a major influence after 2 years.

Mouthfeel is light, thin, peppery and spicy with tart aspects, some bitterness, fruity sweetness and sour notes like rotting fruit or old wine. No alcohol bite, but the oaky, earthy and wine notes make it very complex as the sourness mixes with farmhouse, musty characteristics that tingle and feels prickly, with fizzy carbonation across the tongue as it fades sweet, bitter, sour and dry all at the same time. A great American effort to pretty much master this classic Belgian style. I've been looking forward to trying this beer for a while and it lived up to the hype.

Whoa, didn't see that coming. This was absolutely tremendous. Great nose right off the bat, with a bit of musty funk, some oak, and a healthy vein of natural sour cherry. Palate is similar, beautifully melding all the pieces. Tremendously drinkable, neither excessively acidic nor too flat, just the perfect amount of carb to make you want to guzzle this right down -- a particularly incredible feat for a sour beer. I want to find reasons not to love this as much, but this is right there w/ Rodenbach GC for me. A+.

1/17/16 Chicago (765ml bottle bottled 3/7/14 poured into tulip glass). Dark red/brown pour, moderate tan head with mild carbonation. Aroma of cherry and blackberries. Texture more like a carbonated wine. Nice feel with the flavor and significant carbonation. Taste of tart cherry and blackberries prevalent, nice mix of sweet fruit with sour taste, malt solid. Really enjoyed the strong variety of tastes. I enjoyed the entire large bottle more than I recall the original split offering. Glad I picked this second bottle up from Binny's!

1/1/16 Chicago (765ml 2014 bottle split three ways). Dark red/brown pour, slight tan head which evaporated quickly with mild carbonation. Aroma of cherry and blackberries. Texture more like a wine than a traditional beer, with light body. Nice feel with the flavor and carbonation. Taste of cherry and blackberries prevalent, somewhat sour but pleasant. Very unique offering from Goose Island, and I'm glad I came across this bottle. Will be looking forward to future offerings!

Looks like a brighter oud bruin/flanders. didn't give too much head to lead to a conversation about lacing or retention. Aroma was tart cherries, neutral oak, brown malt.

Taste was nice and sour, more brown base feel. Cherries are contributory, but they aren't calling the shots. I guess this is my least favorite of the three sisters. Still a good beer, would bang at that $20 price point once in awhile.

Very well balanced. The cherry and berry notes are still prominent. The mouthfeel is one of the better I've felt in sours. One of the better ones of the GI sisters (have tried the five of the regular sisters).

2014 on tap. Did not enjoy this beverage.

The look was dark brown, looked fine.

The smell was very earthy, but was not appeasing.

Taste was sourish and was not pleasing.

I enjoyed this 2014 cellared bottle shared at a recent sour ale event I hosed, poured chilled in a tulip. first taste

The color is dark murky ruddy brown with ring of pale tan beads after settling. The smell brings a flanders type wild yeast with cherry odor, sour cherry smell with woody aroma and light vinous aroma. The feel is very intense with cherry acidity and strong puckering lactic acid with moderate carbonation and tannic dry finish.

The taste is good but almost as much wine barrel as cherry in the initial flavor which grows on me with tart cherry and lemony acidic elements with the complimentary woody character with vinous taste from the wine barrel in the back end with puckering sour intensity . Overall this is a nice belgian brown style with lots of fruit in the flavor with the wine barrel almost a bit overpowering to my taste.

A: Increasingly milky brown/red, sandy-tan foamy head that recedes to nothing. Fizzy carbonation.

S: Sour cherry, a bit of wet lumber.

T: Sour with a bite that lasts. Cherry is prominent, oak/wine notes are minimal. Not funk detected, so much for the brett. I'm pretty sure there's some downright sweetness here...

M: Light, only faint fine carbonation that speaks delicacy to me. No grit on the teeth.

O: Very good rendition of a wild ale, but perhaps I should have aged it to give it funk/unique character. As it was, enjoyable, but middling as far as top-tier sours go.

When fresh, the aroma is sweet, floral, and somewhat subtle. Flavor is phenolic, with a respectable sour quality. Five years aging increases the sourness considerably, revealing an acetic acid dominance, with floral hops highlighted in the aroma.

On-tap at Foundry in Northampton, MA on New Years Eve.

A- Dark red to brown pour from the tap to a tulip glass. A puffy, foamy head forms to over a finger with decent retention. Lacing is rare for me.

S- Funky Brett and lactic bacteria are strong as the "wild" added bugs are responsible for most of the aroma. Strong fruits like lemon juice and then some cherries. Funkier here than the flavor.

T- Less funk and more of just a lactic acid battering of the palate reminding me of yogurt tartness and lemon juice sourness and flavor. Notes of cherry come and go as well as the wine grapes and old wet oak. Slight funk but the sourness drowns a lot of the complexity out.

MF- Rather dry and body toward the light side with a slight slickness and by the end a high sourness throughout. Carbonation on the high side with a foamy and fizzy consistency.

Overall probably just a bit too lactic forward for it's own good. The tasty cherries and wine barrels are a bit drowned out by the sourness towards the end for me. Funkyness and sours are well done, however.

Appearance is a blend of hazy orange, red and brown with a candy hue. Finger of head after a moderate pour. Head remains throughout the majority of the drink and leaves a few lace lines on the glass. Intense acidic aroma, mostly berries. Nice touch of oak in the nose as well. Flavor begins with a heavy dose of acetic acid imparting berry, vinegar and cider notes. Just a hint of sweetness and cherry flavor mid drink. Finishes dry with a gentle touch of wine and oak to mellow out the flavor. Medium body and bone-dry feel with ample carbonation. Perfect mouthfeel. I don't even know where to begin with this beer. It seems that every big purchase I make on a new sour ale turns into a home run and this one is a grand slam! So much depth and complexity yet super well balanced and easy to drink. Just an all around stellar beer!

On tap at Fleur in Las Vegas. I was surprised to see this on tap for $6 because I thought 750's were like $22, must be the only good deal in Vegas. Dark reddsih brown, short head. Nice smell of oak, tart fruit, definitely has a touch of funk. Flavor is mildly sour, tart, berries, wood. All in all this was a nice surprise.

Vintage 2012 bomber served into a Goose Isalnd wine glass. Proper.

Pours a murky red/brown with no head head or lacing. Smell is cherries, vanilla, tobacco, oak, and other mild light stone fruits. Taste is pure cherry, oak, and tobacco. Other flavors of stone fruits and light citrus like acidity are there, but the oak and cherries dominate. It tastes like I'm drinking a Cabernet Sauvignon. Mouthfeel is mildly tart, medium carbonation, crisp, hides the ABV, very drinkable.

I've had this beer fresh and this one 2 years old. This one kills the fresh beer.

Pours a dark reddish brown color. Has a one-finger beige head. Big sour fruit and light vinegar aroma. Strong sour and tart flavor that lasts from initial taste to finish. Can taste dark cherries, wild berries, and wood. Medium bodied. Finishes sour but with a touch of yeast and earth. Really good beer and one of the best sours I've had.

22 ounce bottle into tulip glass, bottled on 7/31/2012. Pours fairly crystal clear deep reddish brown color with a 1-2 finger fairly dense light khaki head with good retention, that reduces to a thin cap that lingers. Light spotty soapy lacing clings on the glass, with a light amount of streaming carbonation. Aromas of big tart cherry, red grape, green apple, red wine vinegar, hay, straw, grass, oak, caramel, toast, musty funk, pepper, light leather, light vanilla, and yeast/oak earthiness. Fantastic aromas with great balance and complexity of fruity/funky yeast, cherries, dark malt, and oak barrel notes; with good strength. Taste of tart cherry, red grape, green apple, red wine vinegar, hay, straw, grass, oak, caramel, toast, musty funk, pepper, light leather, light vanilla, and yeast/oak earthiness. Good amount of fruity/earthy tartness on the finish; with lingering notes of tart cherry, red grape, green apple, red wine vinegar, hay, straw, grass, caramel, toast, oak, vanilla, musty funk, light leather, and yeast/oak earthiness on the finish for a good bit. Damn nice complexity and balance of fruity/funky yeast, cherries, dark malt, and oak barrel flavors; with a great sweetness/tartness balance and zero cloying flavors after the finish. Medium carbonation and body; with a smooth, crisp, and fairly acidic mouthfeel that is great. Alcohol is very well hidden with zero warming present after the finish. Overall this is an awesome fruited wild ale. All around great complexity and balance of fruity/funky yeast, cherries, dark malt, and oak barrel flavors; and very smooth and crisp to sip on with the balanced acidity. A highly enjoyable offering.

Pours a fizzy white head that quickly dissipates leaving a thin residue. Dark reddish brown Amber brew.

Massive amounts of Brett in the aroma. Wine like. Oak.

A very sour beer, with not too much funk. Oak and vanilla barrel characteristics are prominent, but without any back-end burn. Slightly tart cherries and cherry pit flavor.

Sticky and oily mouthfeel. Again, wine like. Relatively short finish.

This is probably the most actually sour, sour beer I have had from goose Island. Reminiscent of Rodenbach. Very, very good.

Notes from 06/28/14 Into some Lost Abbey stemware

A: Madame Rose pours a dark brownish color with cranberry tones. Semi clear with some yeasty murk. Forms a smallish khaki tan head at the top that is fairly active and short-lived. Looks nice and stays fairly clean on the glass with little to no stick.

S: Smells of sour cherry and red wine vinegar with some aged hardwood influence. I get a fair amount of mixed berry there backed by a lemony tartness and some light acidity. Surprisingly not much Brett coming through as the nose rounds out with a few earthy minerals and a bit of yeast. Smells quite delightful however with lots of dark fruit notes and a healthy tartness to it.

T: The flavors bring a harmonious mix of tart cherries, balsamic vinaigrette, mixed dark berries, and macerated red wine grapes. Layered underneath is the lemony Brett encased in some woodsy oak earthiness. Nothing here is overbearing or competing with each other. In fact I find it incredibly delicate and nuanced while still delivering a fair amount tartness. I get a dash of lactic creaminess and vanilla with a finish full of bright cherries. Alcohol is completely masked and there is little to no bitterness to the beer. This probably doesn’t deviate too far from a standard Flanders but what is here is pure perfection.

M: Medium light body with a super lush and frothy mouth feel. Good amount of tart pucker hits the palate driving into a nice drying finish. Very nicely balanced and maybe a touch watery thin at times albeit pretty minor.

D: A fantastic Flanders and a great start for me into this style. Simply magical much so that I really found no flaws here. I don’t understand why this one doesn’t score higher in the ratings. The balance of everything was in perfect harmony for me. Perhaps the 2 years of aging has done this one proper. I think I would gravitate towards the Madame over quite a few other wilds like say RR Supplication or Cantillon Rose de Gambrinus. Would have this one over and over again if I could. Permawant!

2012 Vintage :
A: Nothing too pretty to look at. A very murky red brown and poured a half go get head that didn't last much long.

S: Lots of oak, brett, and a small detection of the cabernet barrel. The cherries aren't all that present, but it is a two year old bottle. By the end of the bottle there's a slight hint of the alcohol.

T: Vinegar, oak, the tannins are drying but a good balance. Cherry is here now, skin and all.

O: Looking forward to the next bottling of this to see how much cherry there is when it's fresh.

Pours a light reddish amber color with a white head. The aroma is fruity, sweet and sour and a bit oaky. Inviting and quality funky aroma. In the taste, nice acetic sourness and plenty of depth to it as well. A solid base beer is behind the sourness, with sugar plum, cherry and berry notes. This plays nicely with the oak and the sour. Everything is in good balance and the flavor really pops. Body is medium and semi dry with a lingering sour note. Overall, this is a really nice American Wild or Flanders Red. It kind of reminds me of a kriek lambic, not a surprise due to the Michigan cherries employed here. Good to savor every sip.

750 mL bottle into a pilsner glass.

A- Pours a caramel brown color with close to 3 fingers of tan head. Dissipates pretty quickly.

S- Smells quite lambic, specifically kriek, like. Aromas of oak, vinegar, cherries, all abound.

T- Delicious. Walks the line between classical Belgian kriek and American fruit beer quite nicely. Sour wine and cherry notes up front followed by an after taste of vanilla, I assume from the wood.

M- Slightly prickly and surprisingly light given the flavors and ABV. A very nice sipper.

Overall another well-executed barrel-aged beer from Goose Island. I'll keep my eyes peeled for more after my recent experiences with this and Sofie.

A: Poured from a bottle to a goblet. Had a dark brown color and a thick consistency. There was an inch of foamy, long-lasting head. Below average lacing.

S: A bracing, yet inviting aroma of cherries and a definite sourness.

T: Tasted of cherries (a whole lot of cherries), a powerful sourness, and brett. Like the aroma the flavor is so strong, it's almost overwhelming at first. You quickly get used to it and realize it's a great flavor.

M: A highly carbonated beer with a lively, prickly finish. Medium-bodied.

O: If you love sour beers and if you love cherries, this is a good beer for you. Everyone else should stay away. This is a bold, take no prisoners kind of beer with a lot of personality.

The color is a deep and murky ruby with active carbonation. The head is off white and foamy.

It has a heavy cherry aroma. Vinegar. Brown sugar.

The flavor is sour dark cherries. Tart and sour, yet finishes with a sweetness. Heavy dose of Brett.

Full body with sparkling carbonation.

A top notch Flanders that has very distinct flavor.
