Poured into a Delirium tulip on 3/19/11
Just noticed I didn't jot down the bottling date. Ugh.
I was so upset that MbpBugeye decided to share a BCBVS instead of a Rare he doesn't have I decided to drop the bottle right onto the carpet of his living room floor before schwaeh even got a pour. Nothing to see here; let's move along, eh?
Jet black color. Pouring much of any foam with this line of stouts is a chore. A pour from nearly two feet yielded maybe 1/8th inch head. It was around this time my anger had the best of me and I chucked the bottle down. Essentially no retention other than a collar, though swirling helps briefly.
Smells very sweet, much like the base beer. Lots of chocolate; mostly sweet with slight hints of roast/burnt characteristics. Vanilla was more prominent when calm; after the swirl it was obscured some. The vanilla never vanishes, though. Though it's plenty hot, sweet bourbon nips take a second seed to the aroma of oak.
I had a few sips in December and thankfully the vanilla has faded out some; it isn't as sweet as it was then. Of course it's still really sweet but it's kept in check better. I suppose the best way to put it is that the vanilla is well-seated throughout. Sugary chocolate; not as much roast as I would prefer. Incredibly hot; perhaps not entirely from the bourbon though. Charred oak barrel undertones.
High viscosity; slick, full body. Carbonation is appropriately low. The boozy heat is such that it's worth mentioning again. Slightly roasted chocolate, vanilla and charred barrels on the finish.
Age has done good things for this one. Enjoyable aside from the sugary sweetness and heat. It works for a sipper, though.
