Pours with a very slight brown head into a sifter. Complexion of motor oil and about the same color. Looks intimidating, which I guess a beer like this should.
Smell is lots of bourbon and lots of vanilla.... shocking I know. I'd love to say that a noted small complexeties and undercurrents beneath this but i'd be bulls***ing. This thing smells boozy and sweet as hell (not a bad thing).
Taste starts hot in the first few sips but soon mellows. Bourbon stays constant upfront, but not as overwhelming as I remember it in some fresh bottles of regular BCBS i've had over the years. Chocolate notes come up a little in the middle, and then finishes with a very strong and sweet vanilla finish and aftertaste. No real hop presence.
Moutfeel is slightly sticky but remains relatively smooth throughout. A very "heavy" feeling beer. I couldn't drink a whole lot more than one glass of this at a sitting, but given the style we are dealing with I don't consider it a problem.
Overall a fantastic sipping beer. It delivers exactly what it promises and for that I am appreciative. It will be interesting to see how it ages.... drinking it now I'd say I enjoyed it just ever so slightly more than regular BCBS aged a few years and markedly more than fresh BCBS. Pick it up if you can find it, particularly if you are a big fan of bourbon aged beers.
