on tap at the Clybourn brewpub in Chicago. poured into a solid and heavy goblet. pours a drab, hazy brown with minimal head and no lacings with a soapy rim after a few seconds.
aroma is of rich, smolderig smoked embers with a bit of wheat malt and some caramel malts. very well put together in the nose with a quality that makes the drinker want to taste it.
taste follows the nose perfectly. the smoke sticks around, but doesn't assert itself until the finish. wheat malt is restrained but still present. very satisfying and warming on the palate.
mouthfeel is full bodied and burnt from the smoke. goes down smooth with smoke and a bit of wheat as well. solid on the palate.
drinkability is good. for smoke lovers, this is a solid brew, but it could be overwhelming for those who are not into the smoke. a solid overall brew. cheers!

On tap at clybourn:
A: Dark amber-brown in color with small amount of head - very nice looking beer.
S: Smell was phenomenal - smoky but without the typical meatiness of a smoked porter.
T: My favorite smoked beer - smoky and full bodied but not overdone.
M/D: Very heavy, so not too drinkable but pretty awesome overall.
Serving type: on-tap

A: Served in a goblet with a minimal surface coating of sandy colored head. Very cloudy. Actually more like murky. Looks almost like fresh, unfiltered apple cider (or effluent, depending on your perspective)
S: Sour maltiness. Orange rind. Peat.
T: Interestingly complex. A sour maltiness with a wide range of fruity esters and the type of spiciness that comes from yeast. Peat and earth. Smoke is very subdued.
M: Medium in body with medium carbonation.
D: Can't say I am overly familiar with the style and, while this is a good beer and one which I enjoyed, I can't say I'm going to be visiting many more of these in the future.
