Served on tap in 10 oz snifter at Goose Island - Clybourn, (December 3, 2009).
Bartender said the brewmaster made a small batch of Black Cat Coffee Stout without the coffee, but the batch was also brewed a little differently, apparently not as strong as the coffee version.
Eyes: Midnight black color liquid, with a small amount of very thick, fluffy darkish foam on the head. Strong lacing.
Nose: A wallop of black malts, toasted and rich. A bit of chocolate and interestingly has a sickly sweet undertone I can't identify.
Tongue: Black malts again, burnt chocolate, subtle coffee. A bitter bitter on the tail but very smooth throughout. The 7.3% ABV isn't evident anywhere.
Mouth: Surprisingly carbonated. Quite thick and smooth.
Libation: Very drinkable overall. The snifter certainly emptied much quicker than most stouts I've had. I can't say this exactly stands out as superb in any one area, but it is well balanced and tasty.

On-tap at Goose Island - Clybourn. Served in a snifter.
A - Finger of tan foam - ridiculous retention, glass coating lacing. Black body, with the tiniest hint of ruby red at the bottom of the glass. Pretty close to perfect for a stout in a snifter.
S - Smells like an Irish Dry Stout or English Stout to me. Bitter roastiness and tons of black malt. There's a bit of that soapy flavor that I don't dig so much in this style (a la Guinness) as well as some anise/licorice. As it warms there's a touch of dark chocolate and sweet cocoa.
T - The taste has less of the soapy flavor thankfully. Mostly bitter dark chocolate, roastiness, black malt, and some nuttiness. Pretty solid but plain Jane stout. Well-hidden ABV and mild residual roasty bitterness.
M - Lively carbonation - this might be better on nitro. Otherwise soft medium body that's fairly smooth. Appropriate for the style and ABV. Fairly dry and clean finish, with only slight residual stickiness.
D - This is definitely something of which I could have a few glasses. It's a good, solid, dry stout reminiscent of Cadillac Mtn.

on tap at the Clybourn brewpub in Chicago. apparently this is the 'Black Cat Coffee Stout' without the coffee. pours a pitch black with garnet highlights and two fingers of creamy tan head that has excellent retention and no lacings.
aroma is of black malts and light chocolate notes along with a roasted and smooth overall character. very mellow and rich in the nose.
taste is of sweet black malts and some subtle coffee and chocolate notes. pleasant on the palate with a solid and smooth character. nicely proportioned on the palate.
mouthfeel is full bodied and silky smooth with a satisfying finish of residual subtle black malts.
drinkability is great. very well put together and satisfying. it lacks any real defining character, but still ends up well proporitoned and very sessionale. the brew is basically the 'XXX Porter' without the hops. cheers!
