22oz bomber poured into my snifter

The appearance was opaque black with no light able to penetrate through this black beast of a stout. The pour produced a mere half inch head that was of a slightly light brown color. Poor head retention that was below average with no lacing either.

The aroma was strong in the bourbon department which almost overpowered the other aromas to shine through. Besides the bourbon being the dominate smell I got a decent amount of oak, molasses, tobacco, roasted malts on the charred side, black leather, and surprisingly the espresso is hardly noticeable.

The taste upfront was that of bourbon which pretty much hits your palette with a bang. Coming in is a sweetness with hints of black licorice, sugar, and dark chocolate. In the finish is where the espresso finally comes into play with a pretty intense alcohol heat and slight burn in the back.

Mouthfeel is full bodied with average carbonation. Alcohol burn lingers way beyond you have taken your sip.

Overall I was HUGELY disappointed with this beer. This beer is basically a Bourbon County Stout with added sweetness to it. The espresso in this beer hardly came through and needed to play a more dominate role, instead what you got was another bourbon bomb. If you truly want to try a good espresso based beer, I would rather recommend Great Divide-Espresso Oak Aged Yeti.

Big and rich, completely black but in some very dark brown at the thick edges, there's a certain oily texture to this big stout. The head is a brown-colored one about a finger tall. Retention is good, and it manages some good lacing despite the oils.
Coffee! Lots of fresh coffee, just-roasted grounds all in the nose and mouth. It's the forefront, but it lets the stout express itself all the same. There's lots of dark cocoa, and the bourbon barrel makes its way in softly but firmly with notes of vanilla and wood while offering just a little heat. The wood is dry and oaky, not a soft wood by any means. The coffee is just so rich and full, especially in the nose. It's like drinking a shot of espresso while sniffing a cup of fresh grounds right next to it after putting a little of very rich chocolate sauce, fresh made from cocoa beans, while having a snifter of bourbon right next to it.
The body is full, rich and thick, but it evens and lightens out in a surprising way, certainly more than I expect. I also can feel a certain oiliness to the grounds on the tongue. It's a good stout, and plenty rich, but it could be cleaner.

2013 bottle poured into Hoppin' Frog snifter.

Opaque, black elixir, thin mocha rim, swirls of lacing, and legs all day.

Coffee, toffee/caramel, char, earth tones, dark fruits, bourbon.

Bourbon first, coffee all throughout, thick, dark fruits and chocolate. Yum!

Heavy, thick, tasty, coats the mouth.

Wonderful coffee stout, complex, keeps bringing forth enticing, blended flavors that are unique to the style and keep this brew in a class by itself.
