JustinA1 pulled this out at an epic tasting last night. Thanks Justin! Review written by Wiseman Nick, with Wiseman Justin (different from JustinA1) contributing his scores.

Poured into a Cigar City snifter.

Appearance: Pours out just like motor oil: thick, slick, and pitch black with very little head. Vicious swirls coat the glass walls in dark resin, but only generates a touch of loose, brown fizz. Head retention is poor, but otherwise this beer looks rich. Nick: 4.0; Justin: 4.25

Smell: Caramel-y bourbon, black pepper, chocolate fudge, and a good deal of residual sweetness. Coconut and blackberries also contribute, but aren't nearly as strong as the aforementioned components. A light alcoholic burn caps off each whiff, providing a pleasant and mild burn. To many of us, the combined aroma resembled some sort of bourbon-infused, chocolate dessert (lava cake maybe?). Nick: 4.75; Justin 5.0

Taste: Toasted coconut and all kinds of chocolate - cocoa powder, dark chocolate, chocolate mousse, chocolate syrup - greet the palate on the first sip. The bourbon barrel plays a huge role, but does so in the most beautiful way possible, contributing flavors like caramel, coconut, floral esters, and black pepper; adding very little alcoholic burn. Heavy, roasted flavors are kept in check, but still peek through in each sip. Fantastically smooth and balanced for such a big beer! Nick: 5.0; Justin: 5.0

Mouthfeel: Packs heat without finishing too dry. In fact, each sip finishes with the perfect mix of sweetness and dryness. Moderately creamy, somewhat oily, and certainly full. Nice mouth-coating. Fantastically smooth. Nick: 4.5; Justin: 4.75

Drinkability: What an amazing beer! I can't think of any better barrel-aged imperial stouts out there, and other than appearance, it's hard to imagine where there's room for improvement. Get some if you can. At $45 a bomber, this is still well worth a try! Nick: 4.75; Justin: 4.5

Bottle #4087

Appearance: Semi-vigorous pour into a snifter yields tan head over black. The 3/4 inch head dissipates rather quickly leaving a ring that hangs around.

Smell: Bitter chocolate, milk chocolate, bourbon (with the requisite oak, vanilla and caramel), dark roast coffee. Later, as it warms a bit, cherry and hay.

Taste: Chocolate, dark dried fruit, coffee, vanilla, and, oh yes, there is definitely heat from the bourbon.

Mouthfeel: Nice, considering the age.

Overall: So glad I finally opened one and even more glad I have another! This is a special, special beer. I will try to share the other one. ;)

Held on to this one for a few years and cracked it at a special date. I'm a big fan of regular Bourbon Country, so I've got a pretty good handle on how the regular stuff tastes.

This is a different animal.

Pours as thick and lifeless as you can expect, but after that, it is damn near perfection. Chocolate, smoke, heat, perfume, spice, vanilla, coffee, wood, caramel, time, delicacy, velvet. There is just so much complexity in this, it's hard to properly describe.

I'll have to use a phrase a brewer once told me describes exceptional beers.

"It tastes like memories."

Beautiful beer.
