Brewed with the Saison and farmhouse ales of Belgium in mind, we added fresh Georgia peaches and Brettanomyces claussenii to a fresh white wine barrel and aged the Saison base for 9 months. Stretching the boundaries of the traditional style, we decided to put our own little spin on it.

"Belgian style farmhouse ale." 7.50% ABV confirmed. Bottled 06 Aug 13. "0855." "Ale aged in wine barrels with peaches." Expectations are high given its $21ish price point. 765ml brown glass bottle with classy understated label art and orange foil-ed over branded pressure cap acquired at Argonaut Liquor and served into a slender stem-tulip in me parents' gaff in high altitude Castle Rock, CO. 2013 vintage.

Served cold - straight from the fridge - and allowed to warm over the course of consumption. Side-poured with standard vigor as no carbonation issues are anticipated.

A: No bubble show forms as it pours.

Pours a four finger wide head of white colour. Somewhat thin. Lacking creaminess. Spotty lacing clings to the sides of the glass as the head recedes. Head retention is good - about 4 minutes.

Body colour is a slightly hazy yellow of average vibrance. Appears well-carbonated.

Overall, it looks okay for a saison and average for a wild ale. I'm not really sure what it is at this point. Not unique or special, but there are no egregious flaws.

Sm: Lemongrass, faint lemon peel, faint brettanomyces-induced funkiness, floral hop character, fruity hop character, a white wine tone, and peach fruits (along with accompanying esters). Light bready and biscuity malts. Some biscuity yeast character replete with vitamins. Some hay.

A clean fragrant pleasant aroma of moderate strength. I really wanted some tart fruit or sourness from this. There's none of the nuanced white pepper or milky notes you'd expect in a good saison, and none of the notes you'd want in a sour.

No alcohol presence is noticeable.

T: Floral and fruity hop character. A backgrounded white wine tone is present and adds little; it doesn't even guide the beer or lend much cohesion, but rather distracts. Faint hay. Golden malts. Some biscuity and lightly funky brettanomyces yeast. No real sourness or tartness at all. Light peach fruit; it's not particularly evocative - it isn't juicy orchard fruit or anything. Has an unwelcome kiss of lychee. Sadly, there aren't any real barrel notes at all - no rich oak wood or anything.

Decently balanced, but certainly not gestalt. Fair complexity and decent subtlety. Average depth, duration, and intensity of flavour.

If they were shooting for a saison, they flat out missed the requisite subtlety, intricacy, and nuance. There's no white pepper, spice, or milky notes here at all. If they were shooting for a wild ale, they flat out missed the requisite sourness and the beneficial tart fruit.

Even the highlights here - the peach fruit and the brettanomyces yeast - feel like wasted potential. Subdued for a saison.

No alcohol comes through.

Mf: Lightly coarse - unnecessarily so. Wet. Somewhat refreshing. A bit overcarbonated. Decent body and thickness. There's nothing terrible here, but it just doesn't complement the flavour profile as well as it ought to. Gets the job done, but it doesn't feel custom-tailored specifically to the taste. Fair presence on the palate.

Not oily, harsh, astringent, gushed, hot, scratchy, or boozy.

I'd like the mouthfeel to be dry, juicy, and vaguely refreshing like an orchard fruit, but it falls well short.

Dr: Certainly drinkable, but at this price point it just isn't worth it. Frankly, the wine barrel aging isn't helping the base beer at all, and I figure that's probably what drove the price up in the first place. This is disappointing work from Goose Island, but only because it's priced unreasonably. It'd be fine at $8.99. It drinks like a good-but-not-great saison. Hides its ABV well. The peach notes in particular were disappointingly reticent. I'll easily kill this bottle alone, but I definitely wouldn't get it again, nor would I recommend it to friends.

As Goose Island continues to up their game in the sour arena, this abhorrently priced American "wild" ale employs Georgia peaches as its Belgian lambic inspirations show true form despite its gross misrepresentation on the label- it vague "farmhouse" moniker indicates nothing about its sour underpinnings.

But Halia opens with a glowing pour of golden and canary hues. Despite its mild yeasty haze, the beer simply seems to light up right there in the glass. As a dainty and delicate lacy sheet rises to cap the beer, its foam structures dissolve into a simple collar about its edge. Random and spotty lacing temporarily hangs on the glass before collapsing back into the beer. Its a common appearance where the beer's head character has been compromised by by its own acidity.

Mouthwatering aromas of tart fruit, dry cider, light vinegar and must fills the nose with olfactory-piercing intensity. As any short-lived sweetness contributes only a dry whole wheat type of breadiness and "Sweetheart" candies. But soon its lemon, lime, white grape and white wine acidity wafts over the nose; carrying with it the scent of musty, dried fruit, sea air, and a glimpse of damp hay.

To taste, that thin sweetness and breadiness only gives a lift to the fruit- giving it a modest ripeness before it trails. In its absence, the acidity has full control from the middle palate onward: minerally white wine, dried limes, crab apples, earthy brine and mild apple cider vinegar. Its dry and acidic taste is clean, sharp and palate-stripping. It shies away from the richer and earthier "funk" flavors of traditional lambics in its preference of cleanness and crispness. Its dry fruit taste only reveals any notions of peach as the ale finishes and echoes of its Georgia fruit return in aftertaste, accompanied by wheat.

Dry from start to finish, its early carbonation carries away any sweetness with ease- leaving only acidity to scrub the palate late. Mild alcohol warmth is wrapped into the acids and light barrel tannin with soft spice and powdery oak to finish.

Halia is a wonderful sour ale but misses an opportunity to express more earthen character. Though I like its expressive and clean acidity, it seems overly simplified. It would certainly provide a perfect counterpart to rich french reductions in entrees.

Four Season's Liquors - Morris, IL

Halia is appropriately colored. It glows in its hazy peachiness with swirls of carbonation rushing to the surface. The head comes to a snap, crackling, pop a finger high and slowly fizzles to a chunky ring and island of foam. The ring is bolstered by the active carbonation and leaves patchy lacing in its wake.

The nose is enticing to say the least. The peach is soft but ripe and mingles well with a lactic yogurt quality. Fruit on the bottom. An intriguing minerality wafts from the glass that brings to mind wet stone. The yeast brings forth the mouthwatering orchard fruitiness so important in saisons. A soft peach sweetness rounds it all out with peripheral mustiness.

Halia is another Goose creation that manages to bring all sorts of components together into one happy, balanced, even handed beverine. Peach, both tart and sweet, gets things moving. orchard fruits flash through the middle along with that aforementioned minerality. The orchard fruitiness is bright and juicy. The swallow accentuates the tartness but it never exceeds approachable levels. Very good.

The body leans toward the lighter side of the spectrum, as a saison should. My only minor gripe is that the carbonation does quite have the frothiness of the best in style but it is lively. The tartness is soft but manages to invade every nook & cranny. I could drink mass quantities of this beer.

Halia is a damn fine beer. It's juicy, bright, and approachable to the point I can't see anyone disliking it whether into beer or not. Drinkability is absurdly high while there's enough tartness to make it totally refreshing. Recommended.

Bottle from Proof. Poured into a Goose Island wine-style glass. Slight haze to this beer. Color is like the skin of a lemon. Yellow/gold with a twinge of straw. Tons of bubbly white head that held about a minute before fading into a thinner head and medium collar. Lots of lacing. Aroma is like dry earth, faint barnyard funk, a healthy amount of peach is noticeable, but not at all overpowering. Taste is delightful: peachy farmhouse goodness. Dry/tart yeast. Earthy/floral hops. Simply divine. Nice high carbonation and medium-low body really make this fun to drink.

A - Light golden haze with a head if carbonation on top

S - Tart peach, light vinegar. Really a rich sweet and juicy peach

T - Bretty, slight blue cheese, really farmhouse funk. Light tart vinegar. Juicy peaches to it that adds a nice sweetness to it. Light sweettarts.

M - Thick beer with good carbonation to it that makes it slightly creamy

O - One of the best peach sours I've had as it has a strong juicy peach flavor balanced with slight tartness and Brett. I hope they make this one often and a lot if it

2013 vintage
A-4 This beer pours a hazy lemon yellow body with a sea of microcarbonation and a sticky white film of snow white head.

S- 4.5 The light stone fruit pit aroma has notes of Brett white cheese rind and a dry woody gentle french oak quality with a dry green mango and pine note in the finish. There is the paper straws aroma of oak that comes through as it opens.

T- 4.5 The nice soft tartness is lactic with some full brett flavor of cheese rind and saison ester fruity qualities. There is some soft white wine flavors in the finish with a nice full but soft oak flavor lingering.

M- 4.5 The medium mouthfeel has a nice creamy texture and no real alcohol heat.

O- 5.0 The nice white wine character in the aroma is delicate with great brett character blending in and strong support from the fruity saison yeast and peach notes. This is a delicious beer that didn't last long on a cool summer evening.

Beautiful one-finger snow white head with decent retention and nice lacing. Beer is incredibly lively, bubbling through the head. Beer is a cloudy pale yellow straw color.

Sharp Belgian yeast aroma: sweet yeast mingled with sharp funk. Lemon and wheat.

More sour than funky in the flavor, although there's a bit of both. Brett funkiness comes through as a mild cheesiness at the end. Up front, there's a sharp lemony and white wine sourness, riding a strong wheat background. I don't get any peaches. Very tasty wild Saison, extremely well balanced.

Mouthfeel is very light, even taking into account the tartness and the Brett funk. Balance and complexity, though, means you'll want to take your time. Lively with a pleasant sting.

This is my first of the GI "Sisters." It comes across as a fairly typical wild saison: light, noticeable Belgian yeast, straw, and Brett. That said, everything is well-represented and balanced, and GI did a good job marrying complexity and subtlety.

750ml foiled and capped bottle into Tired Hands stemware. Shared with schen9303.

Pours a 4 finger frothy white head with moderate retention. Beer is a crystal clear goldenrod. Lacing is stringy and webbed with great stick. Nice looking beer.

Nose is lemon, peach and apricot. Some cobweb, band-aid, and wood. Light, crisp and clean. Real nice.

Opens lemon rind, hay, citrus, and peach. Cobweb, oak and funk in the middle. Some spice and more crisp lemon tartness at the end. Finishes funky and peppery with a tart aftertaste. Delicious!

Light bodied with moderate carbonation. Prickly and foamy in the mouth and goes down dry and aggressive. Finishes dry with a sticky aftertaste. Very drinkable.

A real impressive beer that's solid in every aspect. A great addition to the Sisters collection

Mae pours a hazy, pale, straw yellow with a thin whisp of bubbles and white foam. Looks like a Saison.

The nose is slightly acidic with a touch of wild funk. Notes of wooden peach basket, tropical citrus, lychee flesh, and rolled, cut lemons are popping out.

The taste follows the nose, but is much brighter. Peach skins and pits, white wine grapes, lychees, yellow citrus. Also, tart, sharp minerals that lend a salty element. I also pick up a slight buttery pretzel dough note. It's extremely dry and quenching. The acidity really builds up after each sip. Awesome stuff, very close to New Belgium's Tart Lychee, but a bit more sour.

Medium bodied with a medium level of carbonation.

Mae is a great wild ale. I really hope we see it again in the future.

Appearance - Slightly hazy yellow body. Small white head. Thin collar.

Smell - Citrusy. White wine. Bretty and earthy. Some stone fruits.

Taste - Bretty immediately. Stone fruits. Earthy and a little bitter.

Mouthfeel - Medium body. Sweet but the brett cuts it.

Overall - Definitely not worth the price, but objectively it's not bad.

Pale and hazy straw color. It has an aggressive tall white head that quickly subsides leaving behind some spotty lacing.

The Brett smells tart and funky. There's a light whiff of peaches and white grapes.

The peaches, wine barrels, and Brett meld together nicely. White sweet tarts and vinous.

Crisp and clean mouthfeel. Tart. Light body with effervescent carbonation.

I really dig this beer. It's not a great representation of a saison to style but it really showcases the Brett and fruity qualities.

2013 Vintage

Pours a pale yellow color with a slight haze. Just over one finger forms before settling to a thin cap. Moderate amount of lacing is left down the glass.

I get a combination of brett funk with slight barnyard aromas. Smells vinous with slight pepper notes. Get more from the wine barrel than the peaches which I do not pick up on at all.

The flavor is dry, mildly funky and acidic, with mild grape notes. Peaches? I am not picking up on any. I am rather unimpressed with this beer. It is good but the flavor is not knocking my socks off. The funk has not really developed yet and the fruit is not making itself known.

Light and effervescent just the way I like my funky/sour beers. Hard to believe this has a 7.5% ABV.

Would not be worth it at half the price. Probably would improve with age but I wonder where the peaches went.

A- pours clear, slightly hazy straw color with a small fizzy white head with short retention

S- lots of yeasty funk up front, some raw doughy bread notes, subtle peach, hay, earthy notes, oak and white wine

T- the peach is more noticeable on the palate with some nice funky yeast mixed in. White wine flavors mesh in around mid-palate with traditional saison flavors. The close brings grapefruit and peach gummy rings

M- medium body with low carbonation, nearly flat mouthfeel and slick finish

O- Just enough funky Brett, but still lets the traditional saison flavors come through

Look: Hazy golden straw with a minimal head that lines the glass. Lots of legs on this one with a mix of big a small bubbles. Looks like champagne rather the beer.

Smell: Pungent sweet peach explodes from the bottl.! Can smell it from a few feet away. Getting tart Belgian funk, lemon, candied peaches, white wine, straw, sourdough bread, nectarines, and more peach.

Taste: Huge sour hits the tongue followed by, tart lemon, sourdough yeast notes, white peppercorn, sweet white wine, huge sweet and tart peach notes, white nectarines, and more funk on the finish.

Mouthfeel: Light and dances on the tongue like a fine champagne. The bodied fills out after the tart punch but still dances on the tongue. Wets the palate at first but the finish is easily one of the best parts of this amazing brew as it finishes quite dry but leaves behind the sweet peach and white wine notes to linger on the tongue. No hint of alcohol.

Overall: Outstanding brew. The big sour funk punch works seamlessly with the white wine and peach notes to make one hell of tasty American sour. The dry finish really sells this guy by leaving the fruit and wine notes buzzing on the tongue! Letting you really enjoy the complex flavors of this beer after every sip!

2015: 4.25 Draft version is awesome. Oaky vanilla, ripe peaches, moderate sourness. Don't age this.

2013 vintage:
Revisiting this one, found a place selling it for $18 and remembered I liked it.
Bottled Aug 6, 2013, so almost a year old at this point.

Looks and smells the same as the 2012 test batch described below. Not a hugely fruity nose or taste, but it's definitely a sour peach wild ale, not at all muddled, the peach still comes through. After almost a year in the bottle though it seems to have thinned out and attenuated a bit, very dry and very carbonated. Flavor still has plenty of peachy acid and peach pit tannins. Still quite good, but not really worth the high price tag.

Unlabeled, purple-waxed 22 oz. bottle, huge thanks to Dave & company for sharing this on the brewdeck at Fulton. Second time trying this, first time taking any notes on it.

Pours a lightly hazed gold, with rapidly streaming carbonation. Frothy white foam laces a little bit around the edges into a spotty sea foam pattern. Plenty of carbonation visible through the side of the glass.

Softly funky aroma of wild yeast, reminds me of Upland lambics right away. Lacto and mild Brett, minerals and damp hay, some soft peach fruitiness bleeds through behind it.

Tart and crisp with zesty carbonation, it has a certain depth to it, and not just a one-note sour ale. Peach pit with bits of clinging flesh, wild yeast elements, light acidity. A touch more oak presence in here would be nice. Crisp with a pleasant dry finish that triggers the salivary glands. Light bodied and refreshing. It would be easy to finish a bottle solo, hope they release this eventually.

765 ml bottle, 2013 Vintage, stamp on label says bottled on 0733, 12AUG13. Served in a Prairie Teku glass, the beer pours a hazy gold color with about an inch white head that fizzled away quickly. However, there's a lot of lacing. The brew smells like lemon peel, peaches, white wine, oak, and some funk. I think the taste is just like the aroma, but there's the addition of some green grapes/grape skin. It's also nice and tart. Mouthfeel/body is medium, it's refreshing, a bit coating, and has a good amount of carbonation. I liked this a lot, but it's pricey at $20.99 a bottle. Definitely worth trying!

Appearance. Pours a lemony gold ... lulz lemony gold. light haze, half finger of frothy white head that fades quickly to a lasting skim.

Smell. Floral peach notes, some tart juiciness, a little whit wine, and some dry oaky funk.

Taste tart peaches and a ton of woody oaky followed by that mellow toasty vanilla. Some dry white wine for sure that doesn't sit amazingly well in the aftertaste. Super serial, it's gotta sit well in the aftertaste. Yeah...

Mouthfeel. Below medium body, fine and lively carbonation.

Overall. It's a good fruited saison but doesn't hold a candle to the PnB I've been spoiled with lately.

Goose Islands' Halia, saison aged in wine barrels with peaches. Supposedly, lots of peaches. 7.5%.

A: A little over half a finger of head. Hazy yellow. Bright towards outsides, deeper and duller towards the center.

S: Definitely more peach aroma than a peach wheat beer would have. Fruit fades quickly, leaving behind peach skin and pit notes. Some acidity

T/MF: Very crisp and cool. Almost champagne-like sparkle. Peach is light, leaning more towards skin and pit. Very dry, but it seems to work better for this beer than it might a wheat. Pit bitterness in the background.

This seems like a step up for wheat beer fans, but not nearly worth the $22 price tag, to me. I blame AB for that...

Bottle poured into a tulip glass. Beer pours a hazy golden color with a finger of loose bubbly pure white head. Head dissipates quickly, but leaves a good amount of stick lacing that clings to the glass for a while. Nice carbonation, many tiny bubbles streaming up from the bottom of the glass.

Nose is stone fruit, apricot and peaches, lemon, light almond, green grape, mild earthy funk, and old oak.

Taste follows the nose, good apricot skin and fruit flavor up front, oak and earthy brett funk, and lactic acid sourness. Biscuit malt sweetness and sweeter stone fruit mid tongue, before a dry oaky finish.

Light body with plentiful soft carbonation.

Poured from the bottle into a tulip glass.

Deep lemon yellow, orb glowing and opaque. Noticeable transparent carbonation on the sides, with a nice creamy white top that makes two fingers. Slowly settles down with a half finger of head that coats the glass nicely. Looks like a big lemon drop dolloped with a splash of whip cream, real nice looking beer.

Mellow nose, with a subtle subdued sense. Mild brett sensing funk and subdued fruit and a little bit of cream. Peach angle is very buried leaving an indistinct fruit sensation. Otherwise pretty solid.

Big carbonation and playful but also a bit sensing soda carbonated like watered down Perrier. God brett action but very subdued pepper. Not much oak character to this either particularly in the mouthfeel. Good fruit body but not quite juicy, with some peach but mostly hints at some good lemon like tartness.

Overall it's not a bad creation but the body lack some depth and the aromas and flavor don't seem to deliver the peaches very much.

A: pale golden and effervescent beer beneath a fluffy sea-foam white head; lacing sheets and streaks galore

S: white wine and dry oak, stale air and wet grassy fields; hints of sweeter orchard fruit

T: juicy pale fruit and hints of funky brett; wine barrel oak and pinot grigio; floral with bright herbs

M: medium bodied and fuzzy, but crisp and tart; yeastiness pronounced on finish, accompanied by a slight drying

O: an excellent ale - peaches added a nice, understated fruitiness, the wild yeast was balanced and kept things earthy and tacky; elevation of ale via wine barrel aging on-point. Recommended.

Poured into a Funky Buddha Brewery glass. Back label says Bottled On: 09AUG13

A- Pours a medium gold color with a 1/2 inch white head that doesn't retain long before soon fizzing away to a thin ring around the edge of the glass and and a honeycomb pattern of surface foam specs. Non-resilient lacing leaves a thin ring behind on the glass.

S- The Brett gives off a nice aroma similar to green olive and goes well with the light peach fruitiness in the back.

T- The Brett kicks just as hard in the flavor and the peach is still just an afterthought. Mildly sweet with the alcohol being present but not too bothersome.

M- I was hoping for more tartness like there is in Lolita but there's practically none. Still, a bit dry and crisp. Medium-low carbonation also a disappointment. Light in body.

O- Doesn't hold a candle to Lolita, or even Matilda for that matter. Nice for a fruity Brett fix but definitely not worth the $21 I paid.

Appearance: Pours a hazy, golden honey color - some tones of light orange - medium, bright white head, leaves some nice lacing

Smell: Loads of Brett, with an undertone of peaches - seems a bit more funk forward than peach forward - some musty, damp cellar - peach flesh - some woodiness, white wine barrel aromas - tart, wet sourness

Taste: Moderately sour peaches with a lot of Brett - lactic, damp, musty sourness - tart and funky - fruity peaches coated in Brett - white wine, wood, wine barrels - floral and earthy - some light citrus in the background - some light, pale malts at the base - some light sweetness, finishes pretty clean

Mouthfeel: Medium to light body, smooth, nicely low carbonation, finishes with some wetness, but mostly dry

Overall: Hooray Halia

This has some great Brett and peach flavors. Overall, the Brett, the peaches, and the sourness could definitely be more intense, but it's great for what it is. I'm curious to see how this evolves over a couple years.

A: The beer is hazy light yellow in color and has a moderate amount of visible carbonation. It poured with a finger high white head that died down, leaving a patch of bubbles on the surface, a collar around the edge, and some lacing down the sides of the glass.
S: Light to moderate aromas of sourness from the brett are present in the nose.
T: Similar to the smell, the taste starts off sour but also has notes of whitesome hints of peaches.
M: It feels light- to medium-bodied on the palate and has a moderate amount of carbonation.
O: I found this to be saison that is easy to drink and has lots of interesting complexities, neither of which are too strong.
