Appearance is dark brown - mostly opaque with a light tan head. Aroma has notes of dark bread, dough, wheat, slight nutty undertones with some earthy hops. Taste has a hint of smoked wheat, dark malts, spicy earthy hops. Not sure this is really a traditional dunkel as it veers a bit off from a dunkel. Feel is medium bodied, carries some heft and is smooth. Moderate carbonation. Semi-dry finish. Its a solid beer, but it does veer from the style - its too hefty for a dunkel, and much too smoky. That being said, on its own, I enjoyed drinking it and would do so again.

Stumbled on this at an out-of-the-way retailer and decided to take a chance. The last F&W I tried was pretty good. Wonder why this beer isn't on the F&W page at the Goose web site?
Bottled July 6, 2017 -- 3.5 months ain't too bad, I guess. Poured into my short Becher.
L -- Deep, clear dark walnut color with reddish highlights -- a little dark for a Dunkel. Dense tan head that holds up well and leaves great lacing.
S -- Earthy, lightly caramel nose with light hop spiciness. Light DMS with a good swirl.
T -- Roasted malt characters right up front. Some mild chocolate and dark fruit notes back and earthy hop bitterness blending with roasted bitterness. The roasted bitterness lingers long through the aftertaste.
F -- Medium body with a slightly astringent, dry mouthfeel.
O -- Ranking this beer to a Munich Dunkel (as even the label calls it) forces me to give lower numbers than if it had been called a Schwarzbier. Once again, a U.S. brewer wants to load up a Dunkel with big roasted malts -- and I don't understand the disconnect. A Munich Dunkel should be bready and rich with melanoidin character -- soft and smooth, not roasty and dry-to-crisp. Stand this next to a Köstritzer and cheer -- stand it next to an Ayinger Altbairisch Dunkel and recognize the missed target.
