Bright yet dark this wild ale already started kind of wild with a near schizophrenic amber to orange color. The head was thick and frothy and settled nicely for a while.

The aromas are typical and yet atypical. Sour grasses and acidic vinegarish aromas yield a pungent earthy nose. There is some bready scent and some background fruit but also a yeasty component.

Sour, tart, acrid and funky this has all the elements of a farmhouse ale and it seems to go well. Some breadiness and doughy tastes work with a yeasty, light clove and orchard fruit. Some Sour Patch Kid sweetness and a bit of acrid pungency all mix to create an interesting and intriguing beer.

A: Clear blonde. Ok lacing.

S: Farmhouse and yeasty.

T: Slightly peppery. Very light. Foamish. Like a farmy saison. I can sense the belgian pale here. Definitely belgian. Lots of farmhouse and yeast.

M: Foamy and lots of bubbles.

O: Interesting, but I have yet to have regular Matilda.

On tap at PreFunk tonight... Pours a hazy orange with a pretty flimsy white cap and no real lacing.

Nose is a bit funky, but with a bigger lean toward fruity esters... a bit of something that I associate with white peppercorns.

Flavor and aromas mirror each other... the brett shows as a sorta dank/dusty cellar essence.. damp hay... peachy esters play with the limited residual sugars and linger for the finish.

Body and carbonation are fine.... Okay brew... Seems sorta pedestrian given the pedigree... Though, there is nothing wrong with that in the grand scheme.

3.5's across the board.

A: The beer is slightly hazy golden yellow to orange in color and has a light amount of visible carbonation. It poured with a thin layer of bubbles on the surface and a collar around the edge of the glass.
S: Light to moderate aromas of sour yeast are present in the nose.
T: The taste starts out with some fruity flavors and transitions into flavors of yeast and pleasant sourness.
M: It feels just about medium-bodied on the palate and has a moderate amount of carbonation.
O: This is an interesting twist to the original Maltilda as the Lambicus yeast strain imparts a light amount of sourness and gives the beer added complexity.

A: Pours a burnt orange with a small off-white head.

S: Aroma brings musty stone fruit, potpourri, slight vinous, bready grain.

T: Notes of apricot, floral, wet hay, light lactic tartness, mild earthy note, caramel.

M: Light-bodied with medium carbonation.

O: Certainly a more interesting beer than regular Matilda. I would have it again.

On-tap 8/14/2014 at Doherty’s East Ave Irish Pub in Pawtucket, RI, served in a tulip glass.

A: The beer is a deep amber color, with a large off-white head that fades slowly and leaves a thick lace on the glass.

S: The aroma contains wild Belgian yeast, tart fruit and some caramelized malts.

T: The taste starts out with some sweet flavors of berries and caramel. Then some breadiness comes in from Belgian yeast and a hearty malt character. There’s a decent balance for the style. The after-taste is slightly sweet.

M: Crisp and a little smooth, medium body, medium carbonation, finish is slightly sticky.

O: A little tasty, goes down easily, not too filling, decent kick, decent representation of style, this is a solid beer to drink for a while if you’re in the mood for the style.

Straw colored. Lightly sweet fruit notes on the nose. Light bodied. The brett brings a dry funk to this offering. The finish has an effervescent dryness that is reminiscent of champagne.

Enjoyed on tap at Bier Station. Poured into a small Belgian tulip glass. Was able to try this once at a beer festival, but it was a couple hours in, so I didn't trust my ability to properly evaluate. Glad to get an opportunity to try it again with some time to sit and appreciate it.

Appearance - A beautiful looking beer, with a big frothy whipped head of stark white three fingers thick and full of tiny microbubbles. It begins to recede immediately, but takes its time, with the foam creeping back but leaving opaque sheets of lacing on the side of the glass. Beneath the luscious head is am enchanting brassy orange with a jewel-like quality to it. Darker notes of amber and lighter tones of gold and what looks like a bit of a chill haze.

Smell - As one would expect, the Brett is front and center, with dominant notes of white wine must, grapefruit, and chardonnay balanced along side fresh cut grass, funk and wet hay. I know it can smell somewhat off to some, but I just love that yeasty pungency that the Brett provides. This one makes it the star.

Taste - Not quite as enchanting as the nose, but with a lot of the same characteristics, just more subdued. Grapefruit and dry citrus are again on display with plenty of funk, white tea and damp wood. Just a touch of tartness, like lemon juice that has been cut with water to take the bite off. The pale malt is there, but it really takes a back seat to the yeast.

Mouthfeel - Light bodied and plenty of carbonation with a very dry finish.

Overall, a wonderful beer. I'm a bit biased when it comes to Brett beers, but this is a good one. The name might be misleading to some, given that "lambic" as a style of beer is usually sour to some degree. However, the Brett culture after which this version of Matilda takes its name is only a component to making a lambic and doesn't provide the souring that bacteria like Lactobacillus and Pediococcus. Anyone expecting this beer to be sour is likely going to be disappointed. Personally, I think a more analogous comparison for this beer is Orval, or perhaps Rayon Vert, even if people's opinions may very on which is the most preferable.

Pours a clear, copper color. 1/4 inch head of a white color. Good retention and decent lacing. Smells of sweet malt, hops, sourness, and spice (nutmeg and allspice?). Fits the style of an American Wild Ale. Mouth feel is sharp and crisp, with an average carbonation level. Tastes of sweet malt, hint of sourness, slight grass, hint of hop, and spice (nutmeg and all spice?). Overall, not very sour and the spices in the aroma and body are confusing. I did not like this nearly as much the regular Matilda.

Appearance: Light brown, short tan head (as normal for a growler) leaves some lacing

Smell: Some spicyness to the nose, and strong brett funk character

Taste: Malty, nice brett tartness (tart but not really to the point of sourness), fruity flavors. Very tasty. Also a little spice on the finish

Mouthfeel: Light to medium body, good carbonation, dry finish

Overall: This is fantastic. Wish I had some regular Matilda to compare with, but I am very happy I could pick this up. I don't notice any real down sides to having this in a growler vs tap.

"One man's trash is another man's treasure." It that statement doesn't ring true in any other realm, it certainly does in the world of craft beer. Where mistakes are made and concessions are drawn- sometimes the results don't just change expectations, they exceed them!

Like the original Matilda, this Brettanomyces infused version looks much the same- an amber body diffuses light to allow only an ominous amber-golden glow. Firmly headed with a boastful bone-white froth, its staying power is withstanding and its lace is clingy and concentric from its first sip until its last.

But its deeply earthen aromas are a far cry from standard Matilda. This one is raw, rustic, and pungent with everything from hay and straw, to leather and oak, to floral and cheese, to barnyard and cellar funk. It simply spans the gamut of all things mushroom, horse blanket and wood rot.

Although all those aromatics may seem off-putting, remember that the best cheeses are challenging to the nose. This beer is much the same as the taste of toast, dry caramel and nuts claim an early stage. But its the middle palate that offers up a dry earthy taste that's much more floral, salty, and tea-like as the base flavor of dried fruit and cinnamon spice play out underneath.

Firmly dry from start to finish, the ale has a creamy-dry beginning but then turns a leaf in order to accept powdery textures, light spicy astringency, and a hint of peppery warmth en route to a clever dry finish with echoes of decaying wood.

This is a highly challenging and experimental beer that will give the staunch sour ale lover something to chew on. but also leaves the everyday appreciator of beer a distinctsive introduction to Sour Ales.

Pours a hazy orange with a foamy tan head that settles to a partial film on top of the beer. Thin rings of lace line the glass on the drink down. Smell is of malt, citrus, floral, funk, and Brett aromas. Taste is much the same with fruit, floral, and Brett flavors on the finish. There is a mild amount of Brett bitterness on the palate with each sip. This beer has a good level of carbonation with a crisp mouthfeel. Overall, this is a good beer with a nice Brett presence, especially in the taste.

This is a crisp orange color and is topped with a thick head which retains extremely well. The aroma has some fun notes, such as rose pedals, a modest tart aroma, and a sweeter version (sweet tarts). Not as fun as it taste, which is modest in overall flavor, though it honestly isn't very wildly interesting. There are kisses of rose, white pepper, a note of rubber, and a light bitter ending. The texture is smooth at least. Still, Matilda Lambicus was not as impressive as I hoped.

A very nice Wild Ale. Slightly musty old barn, apricot, peach, and spice aromas. Flavors pretty well align with the nose bit ends bit dryer and spicier than expected. Overall, very enjoyable but I really wanted a lot more Brett character in the beer. It was enjoyable but could have been over the top

I had this on tap at Federal Taphouse enjoyed chilled in a snifter.

The color is deep amber bordering on copper with good clarity and thin ecru head with fine bead. The smell is wild yeast which has a stone fruit aroma like cherry with a subtle malt hint in the background. The feel is good with moderately high carbonation and subtle dry texture with light yeast tanginess and low sweetness with light wild yeast and alcohol in the finish.

The flavor is good with nice demonstration of the base with some brett character giving the slight cherry-like taste and the malt has a mild toasted so the slight jam on toast comparison comes to mind. This is pretty decent...better than I expected actually. I like this as much or more than the un brett-ed version.

Draft at The Bishop's Collar in Philadelphia, PA.

Pours a slightly hazy, bright golden orange color with tangerine edges and a one finger, frothy white head that slowly settles into a thick, lasting ring.  Very good retention with streaks of soapy lacing left behind.

Earthy, musty aroma with a strong farmhouse character and powerful brett/wild bug presence.  Earthy with hints of grass, straw, barn and dry, funky yeast.  Some pale malt underneath with ester-y light fruit notes.  

On the fuller end of medium body with slightly creamy texture and soft carbonation.  Dry, champagne-like effervescence with a musty farmhouse character and dry, funky brett.  Really strong wild yeast character along with bready yeast and crisp, light fruit.  Some biscuity pale malt and light fruit sweetness on the back end.  Well balanced and refreshing with the dry, musty brett giving this beer an interesting twist.  Not too exciting but flavorful and easy to drink.

Khaki head. Orange hued gold in color.

A lot of Brett and medicinal flavor here. Very funky. Not sour. Barnyard. Lots of yeast an bready malts.

Mouthfeel: dry. Medium bodied. Ends with more medicinal flavors.

Overall, much worse than Matilda. What went wrong with his beer? Just not enjoyable compared to the original.

From 12/11/13 notes. Originally had a couple of pours of this at a beerfest in NYC a couple of weeks ago, but having this on tap at Beer Authority in NYC again for a proper review. 14oz. pour in stemware.

a - Pours a hazy, deep burnt orange color with two inches of fluffy white head and moderate carbonation evident. Lots of lacing left on the glass.

s - Smells of sour white wine, grapes, oak, fruits, spice, yeast, floral notes, and earthy notes. Really nice nose, lightly sour and floral, I like it a lot.

t - Tastes of sour white wine, sour grapes, fruity malts, yeast, spice, tropical fruits, citrus hops, oak, floal hops, earthy notes. Taste is good, more spice and a little more white wine. Pretty good.

m - Medium body and low to moderate carbonation. Smooth and crisp, and easy to drink.

o - Overall a very good beer; not as good as the new Sofie beer Sofie Paradisi, but I like it better than the normal Matilda. Lightly funky and sour, and easy to drink, would love to have this again sometime.

Matilda Lambicus pours a clear golden color with a small lacing head. The aroma is similar to that of cat urine. The taste however, is dry and has a mellow fruity sweetness. Flavors blend together nicely, and easy to drink. Overall if you can get past the smell its a nice easy drinking and enjoyable fruity beer.

A: light orange brown in color. slight haze. Minimal whit head, but good retention. Some light lacing.

S: Dry, earthy with a mild woodsy quality. Cherries and grapes.

T: Taste is similar. Dry, earthy, some caramel and a hint of toast. There is a touch if acidity, but its not at all sour. Light white grapes.

M: lighter body. Appropriate carbonation. Light tartness. Mild bitterness.

O: a pleasant beer.

The beer is golden to copper in color with a thin off white head. The aroma brings grapes, grape skins, ripe fruit, wine. Sweet wine, alcohol, perhaps a touch of peach. White grape juice. A bit of out of kilter. Interesting feel. Kind of thick with moderately low carbonation. Lacking any characteristics that implore me to have more. Sofie Paradisi was fantastic in that regard. This was just ok.

heard this was born from a mistake. lots of good things were. clear, looks just like matilda, maybe even a shade lighter from what i can remember of it. the head is a solid inch and pretty thick but not all that long lasting. the nose here is more tart than sour, surprising given the lacto rather than brett in this. its cool though, as its mouthwatering and fruity like peaches and pears, but not a huge pucker. the flavor too shows only moderate acidity, with a lot more grain base than i remember matilda having. the lacto finishes it super dry though, and the sourness creeps up as it warms. i still get great belgian yeast fruit tones from this, and i like it a lot. i may even like it better than the original. drinks much lighter than its abv, and although it could take on a little more carbonation, still feels quite delicate and alive. overall an excellent brew.

Poured into a tulip at Rustico/Arlington

Don’t know if I can make sense of this one. Plain. Blah! A disappointment all by itself. If you’re thinking this beer is similar to Matilda be ready for even more disappointment. Nothing to like. Nothing to hate. One bright spot, this beer hides its 7% ABV very well.

A – Pours a clear amber. Little to no head (bar pour). Good lacing.

S – Upon a good swirl some sour cherry fruitiness emerges. Some faint funk. But all the aroma is generally missing. Budweiser has more.

T – Almost tasteless for a wild ale. Very little bitterness. No acidity or sourness from the Brett Lambicus.

MF – Medium light bodied. A bit sharp.

On draft, taster pour

A: Pours a clear pale yellow. Billowing draft head. Sticky lacing all over glass.

S: Bready biscuit malt. Belgian yeast. Lot of Belgian pale ale character more than a wild ale.

T: Not as funky as I was expecting. Strange Belgian pale ale and yeast funk. Finish is slightly dry.

M: Medium bodied
