I will add that the value comment did not include two 4 packs of beer sold at the same price as served at bar or booth ($7 per bottle for Matilda and $ 10 per bottle for Bourbon County Stout) Although the Bourbon County Stout is so great it was almost worth it!

We took the 90 minute tour followed by tasting all the beers on tap. The tasting room was THE SEIBEL INSTITUTE ! to sit there was worth the $3 tour admission. Valuable books where locked away behind glassed in shelves on the outer wall and the opposite wall had group photo's of the classes graduated since the start with a noticable gap for the prohibition years. The Seibel Inst. has been downsized and when it changed ownership the old staff of 10 yrs ago was released. By contract they were not allowed to teach the brewing arts anywhere else! What a waste.

Tour guides rotate - ours worked at the main brewery and although very friendly admitted to no knowing several details when questioned. He did relate a few war stories about his early days kegging beer at this downtown brewpub. The brewery was tight for the 15 or so tourists. Samples were poured from pitchers taken from the taps.

We had their famous burger and chips and found it very well done. I had a cask ale - Red Velvet which was very warm but had a nice head. The pint was the last of a cask tapped Tuesday - 6 days earlier. Seeing how slowly I was drinking it my waitstaff offered another beer as exchange but happily accepted my refusal. No other cask conditioned beer was available yet although the next 2 up were chalked up on the beer menu - The Doppleweisen Bock would have been nice!.

I would have enjoyed my visit more if the person waiting on me had suggested checking with Trader Joes 1/2 block down the street or Sam's just behind the brew pub to save $20 off the $28 4 pack of Matilda.

I was having such a great time I even paid $40 for a 4 pack of Bourbon County Stout (not available on shelves this late in the year).

The tap brews were noticably better especially the Oktoberfest, IPA and Hefeweizen.

Although I've been to the Wrigleyville location more times than I can count, I just never made it to Clybourn because I assumed it was pretty much the same. Turns out I was sleeping on this place. The vibe is much more restaurant-ish than the Wrigley location, not that its a bad thing, but the beer selection was much better. They had all sorts of interesting things that I had never seen before. I had the BA Extremely Naughty Goose, Evening Joe, and The Dark Crusader. All three were fantastic. Wish they bottled some of that. Will definitely be going back to try more of the limited production stuff.

Another visit to GI Clybourn on 12.21.14, I feel it's time for a proper review despite having this as my local watering hole for nearly 10 years.

The vibe at Clybourn is always nice, they have sports on the TVs and usually some decent music playing, though sometimes the noise is just that of the patrons enjoying themselves. People are often in a jovial mood, and the clientele is usually quite diverse, from the average Lincoln Park resident, to tourists who are visiting the city, to families having a get together and of course the beer nerds. Everything is fairly harmonious and friendly and representative of those who are there. The quality at GI is quite good, the food is generally good though there have been some definite misses, more sophisticated than typical bar food, but approachable and the quality of the beer is generally above average for the on site brewed beers and the company staples are always available. The service can sometimes leave a bit to be desired, being sat in odd spots or just slow and unresponsive servers can at times plague this place, though generally, the staff is in a good mood and attentive. The selection is always nice, the beer menu is organized by attributes and each generally have 1-5+ options to choose from and there is usually at least 1 or 2 options on cask, which I greatly appreciate. The food is good as mentioned previously, more inventive and creative than most bars, but still definitely bar food and the pub chips are a must have. I've had some definitely bad dishes that were of no fault to the kitchen staff, just a bad recipe or a bad combo of ingredients, perhaps shame on me for even trying them.

Verdict: Goose Island Clybourn is generally a sure bet for good food and good beer. While most people look the other way at Goose Island until Bourbon County is mentioned, the pub consistently makes some excellent beer that often goes unnoticed or unheralded. Add in a nice menu of bar favorites, it's easy to see why this place is always busy.
