Pours a pure black, topped with a two finger frothy khaki head, leaves webs of lacing.
Coffee, earthy aroma, "dirt", dark roasted malt.
Rich malty taste, "darkly floral", acrid, coffee grinds, some dark fruit and apple.
Medium-full bodied, an ok stout but nothing to write home about.

The Black 47 stout is a really nice stout to drink. The appearance is very dark. Really, black. Light does not pass through it. Yet surprisingly, it doesn't have a really strong aroma. The taste is very balanced. It is not overpowered by the malt. Definitely roasted malt with very little to no hop bitterness. Just, not very strong and the finish is short. This is probably aided by the slight carbonation. A nice touch. I really like this brew and would definitely order one again.

12 oz bottle that had been in my refrigerator for 4-5 years. Held up nicely.

Poured a deep brown (almost black) with a good half inch head of brown foam that settled in a few minuts, but clung to the glass in places. The smell was dark malt with notes of cocoa and molasses. The taste was a good malty flavor with dark malt, some dark chocolate, a hint of vinous fruit and prunes, and finishing with cocoa and a hint of hops. Not bad at all, and quite a bit of flavor for a "dry, Irish stout", though perhaps some of these flavors developed with age. The mouthfeel was smooth and dry with modest carbonation. The dry, malty flavors lingered pleasantly. This was quite an enjoyable beer after an unplanned aging.

A - Nice deep brown (read black) with a tinge of ruby at the edges. Nice tan head that left lacing down the glass.

S - Roasty coffee smell with a touch of tart sweetness

T - Nice taste here, with a great geal of roasted malt flavor. This one verges more on the coffee side of iraiash drys. Nice dose of hops also lending a nice bitter note.

M - Medium slicker mouthfeel. Less thick than it looks, but well carbonated.

D - Easy drinking stout, slightly different than the norm but still very drinkable.

Pours a thick black color topped with a fairly thick tan head. Some staying power for spotty lacing. The aroma is a pretty strong coffee scent which I enjoyed. The flavor is pretty good with a lot of coffee with some chocolate and slight bitter hops mixed in.

The beer poured a deep dark brown, about as "dark brown" as dark brown could be.
A thick, creamy tan head formed that was about 3 fingers thick. The head stayed on the scene for quite some time. There was a pretty good amount of lacing left in the glass.

Aroma was not quite that strong but carried some dark roasted notes and an unsweetened cocoa or dark chocolate quality. As the beer warmed a bit, you got a more assertive roasted aroma.

The taste was a bit more on the coffee side, while the aroma reminded me more of chocolate. Either way, there was a deep roasted malt flavor that was reminiscent of coffee or perhaps the unsweetened cocoa again. The finish was where I was slightly let down. It was a bit dry or slightly astringent. The roasted malt taste is what lingered the most and this was almost too dry by itself.

The mouth feel was medium in body. It was drinkable and nice.

A nice stout but not one to search for.

Delicious cocoa and roasted malt smell. Pours to an opaque black with a tan head that quickly dissipates. Taste is unsweetened chocolate and very roasted malt that finishes sweet and slightly bitter almost like a scotch ale. For a stout the taste is amazingly light and dry, not heavy and thick like usual. Carbonation might seem high but appears to compliment the different flavor of this stout. This is a very flavorful and smooth beer. Drinkability is very high.

Pours opaque black, not much head. Kinda cool how black it is. Chocolate aroma. Taste is heavy on the roasted side and rather bitter for a stout, both aspects I like. Hints of dark chocolate. It's medium bodied and well-carbonated. Very nice overall. I don't drink a lot of stout and this one has me wondering, why not?

A beer-of-the-month selection. Black with very thin, bown head. Not much aroma but flavor is distinctive, dominated by highly roasted malt. Slightly bitter with not much complexity, but the flavor certainly lingers. Slightly fizzy mouth feel. OK stuff, but coupled wikth my tasting of the Old Man ale I don't think I am going to book a flight to the East Coast to visit the brewery.

Opaque black color with thick dark head and decent lacing.

Smells a sweet and roasty, a little like burnt toast.

Taste is roasty, which I like, with a little coffee and chocolate in the background. Very little hops to speak of, but the malts are obviously the focus here.

Mouthfeel is medium-bodied with a crisp dryness.

A very tasty beer - the roasty malt is delicious and I would definitely add to my rotation if I could get this locally.

Very dark pour. Even held up to the light, it's opaque. Head is small but dense, tannish-brown in color. Good roasted-malt aroma, a tad burnt perhaps, with a nice dark chocolate hint. Sweet malt flavor, with a lot of roast. Hop bitterness is low, but the scorched malt offsets the sweetness quite well. A little bit of chocolate rounds things out nicely.

Very well-done Irish style.

I poured this beer into my tumbler at 50 degrees. The beer was black as tar and had a really brown head. The smell was slightly nutty and nice. The taste was of rich coffee and toffee notes and was kinda burnt roasted tasting. The head dropped really fast and had minimal lacing.. Slightly bitter but not too bad. I liked and will buy again.

Poured a deep brown, virtually black color with moderate tannish head.
Smell demonstrates a nice roasty malt character with the presence of coffee and bitter chocolate also noted.
Taste combines the roasted malt with the coffee and chocolate nicely. A firm dry bitterness presents itself at the finish.
A very drinkable stout. The alcohol content would make it nice to session.

This came from an old beer of the month selection. It's mellowed some since I first tried it over a year ago. Big psst when opened the bottle and it poured the same way. HUGE, thick, foamy, frothy head that settle down in couple of minute. A touch overcarbonated especially for an irish stout, I think. Opaque. Nose was roasty with a bit of vanilla and marshmallow. Taste is more so but also a bit of a tang. Trying to do Guinness or an error? Maybe error 'cause this is much heavier in body and even a tad sweet. Anyway not too bad. I'd have another sometime if able.

Thanks to SwillBilly for this beer. Your gifts were very generous. As a long time fan of Irish Dry Stouts I was really looking forward to this beer and a time to sit and enjoy it. I was not disappointed.

Appearance: Pours pitch black with a big chocolaty brown head. The lacing is impressive as well.

Smell: This beer has an exceptional aroma of toffee leather tobacco cocoa, burnt caramel and coffee.

Taste: The flavors seem to be dominated by a dry astringency. After adjusting to the dry burntness, the flavors of cocoa, toffee, burnt malts, and a bit caramel, milky cream, and roasted grain, come into play and please the palate. This is everything I expect in an Irish Dry Stout. The aftertaste has a nice tobacco earthy hops flavor that lasts and last for quite a while.

Mouthfeel: The mouthfeel is medium full with a slick center and crisp around the edges.

Drinkability: This is a very tasty Irish Dry Stout and at 4% it is quite sessionable if you like them dry.

Hope this is helpful.
Cheers!

Thanks to beermaninpa for the trade...
Appears a black color with a lush two finger tan head that slowly fades out. Scattered lacing is left around the goblet.
Smell is of creamy cocoa, vanilla, and coffee beans.
Taste is of bitter coffee, and I mean burnt, roasty bitter coffee that has been in the pot for way too long.
Mouthfeel is fizzy, with hints of roasted, burnt coffee sludge like the waitress felt too lazy to make a new pot, or even instant for that matter.
Drinkability...no thanks. Not a fan of this. I wanted to like it and I liked the way it looked and the smell was half decent but it died after that.

poured from a 12oz bottle into a glass

A- uh..i poured it into my glass and as soon as the beer hit the bottom, it foamed up and almost spilt over the side. there was barely any beer in there, and the head was already 3-4 inches long! the damn head didnt disapate at all! i got bored after a few minutes, so i had to drink it from there. it was a carmel brown color, which looked fine but it was the size of the entire glass. i like big heads but this was too big, ridiculously big. the beer itself was BLACK, and that was awesome, but i deducted points from this beer for the size of the head.

S- it smelt like a hardware store. i know that's strange but that's really what i thought of smelling this beer.

T- eeh. not roasted, not malty, just like drinking rum or something like that. not carbonated at all, ew.

M- superthin! at the least, i would have expected a beer this dense to be thick, but not at all. as i noted before there was no carbonation here either. like drinking motor oil.

D- no thanks!

This beer pours a dark black leaving a sudsy tan head that disappears slowly. The aroma of this brew is some what sweet with a "fluff"(marshmallow) like aroma. There is also a nice spicy sense of vanilla, cinnamon, allspice. The taste starts sour with a little bitter hop kick. There is a suttle coffee burnt feel on the palate and finishes watery in texture and body. Overall decent beer with some positive chocolate malt aromas.

Received this from Mr. Doyle's beer of the month collection late last year.

Poured black with a very strong head initially but is now reduced to floating bubbles. Aroma was wonderful with the pour, strong coffee and chocolate notes. Taste is of sweet chocolate malts with a slight coffee and bittering hop finish. Mouthfeel is OK but a litte thinner than I had hoped. Drinkability is good with a lower than average abv and a good taste. Worth a shot if you can buy it.
