This place is all-American. Burgers, beer, sports, etc... Their beer selection is good if you go by quantity. They usually have a few okay rotating taps, but the rest are big name so-so west coast beers that one can easily find at any other bar or restaurant in California. Their take on a "Belgian Beer Month" consists of just having three different Belgian-style beers in bottles. Anyway, I wasn't sent running by the beer selection, but there are two other places (well, one really) in the neighborhood that I'd hit up to geek out on beer.

Fried things here are pretty bland and their steak fries are just not good (I'd opt for the salad instead), but burgers are okay if you be a hungry man or woman.

Many days I would have picked Gourmet Haus Stadt, but on this day I was leaning towards American cuisine and beers. As I hadn't visited City Pub yet, I thought that it would be a good opportunity to give it a chance.

It's comfortable inside. Clean, modern look inside. There's a fireplace to get next to. Outdoor seating is available out on the street. The service is very attentive, checking on your status every few minutes (at the bar at least). 24 different beers on-tap and roughly 10 bottled options. Many of the taps are mainstays, with a few of them rotating in and out. Brands like Steelhead, Stone, Anderson Valley, Drake's, and Half Moon Bay are represented. A few Belgians are available from the bottle. Glassware comes in two forms, shaker pints and Chimay chalices, depending on what you order. The BBQ pulled pork sandwich was a pleasant surprise, and a good way to start the long drive back to Orange County. While overall I prefer Gourmet Haus Stadt, City Pub is an acceptable alternative when your craving turn American.

I have been here once almost every week for the past 5 years, and have always found the food and wait staff among the best of any pub-type restaurant on the Peninsula. The 24 taps here are representative of the west coast's many craft breweries and styles, with a few nationally popular taps always in place for your non-adventurous friends. Really good burgers and fries, but the jerked chicken salad is my favorite. One big TV will be on the major local sports event, but it's not really a sports bar, more of a traditional pub feel, where families with strollers are comfortable on the weekend, and people from work come together at weekday lunchtime.

Update July 26, 2015: City Pub continues to get better, particularly for hopheads (half the 24 taps are hop-forward IPAs, pales, and session ales). Decent bottle selection as well. Food is consistently good, if unvarying in menu, with the best burgers on the mid-Peninsula and those crispy chicken wings. Great long bar, personable staff, regulars are treated like gold here.

Went to City Pub yesterday with some friends for a late afternoon/ early evening drink and a snack.

While the inside of City Pub is very nicely decorated, we opted to sit outside and enjoy the warm sunshine. They have plenty of tables inside and out, although I've been there and seen every one of them filled, always a sign that you're in a good place.

We instantly greeted and told we could sit anywhere we liked, a server came by shortly, who seemed to know everything that was on tap (about 20 or so). He was very attentive and always made sure our glasses were full.

The food is modern pub grub. "Fancy" burgers and salads, but big wedge cut fries covered in Parmesan cheese. It's a step up from typical pub food, but not out of touch with what this place is trying to be.

Overall it was a great time, and I'll be sure to go back to City Pub whenever I can. The server even took a chance at guessing a beer for me. I ordered a Stone Pale Ale, and they had run out and he brought me a Racer 5. "I figured you might like this, and if you don't, I'll get you something else." He was spot on!

On a Monday night at 7pm, there was still a good number of tables filled in this comfortable tavern with ecclectic decor. On this cold night, the outside tables were empty. Inside there are probably 20 or so tables, with about 3 right next to the fireplace which was a blessing for tongiht. The bar is a pretty long, wavy bar, with track lighting above, on a similarly wavy track. One large flat screen TV is mounted near the back. The music is low enough to allow talking. The bar decor looks like someone did it themselves -- Peet's coffee shop goes to a crafts fair, picks up some sheet metal, then put up christmas lights. All in all, it was a very comfortable vibe. Clean. Soccer players, families, yuppies, a sheriff, college age kids -- a nice mix. I'm already sold at this point.

The two bartenders/servers and the busboy did a great job of watching over us. Very friendly. One small peeve is that the ketchup jar was slimy with ketchup on the outside.

Selection is pretty damn good for the peninsula. See the beer list for the complete list which is almost up to date -- they make a tiny card for each table to tell you about the 3 guest beers (Stone PA, Arrogant Bastard, and Jubelale). They are mostly pale ale types (SNPA, Fat Tire, Anchor Steam, Steelhead, Mirror Pond)/IPA (Lagunitas, Racer 5), but no DIPAs. There was a brown and an amber, Black Butte from Deschutes, Guiness, but no real stouts. Don't think I saw any belgians unless you count Jubelale. No wheats or experimentals. All in all, that's pretty darn acceptable. All beers are $5 for 16oz, including the guest Arrrogant Bastard (I'm going back...)

Food is pub fare with a step up. I had a nice but undersalted Philly Cheese Steak ($9.50) (easy fix of adding salt). DW had the pub cheeseburger (~$8-9) medium rare with blue cheese which was great. They came with big potato wedge fries from recognizable potatoes -- I'm no fan of the wedge, but these were pretty darn good.

Overall: great comfortable vibe, no pretense or arrogance. I just wish it was closer to home for me. Doesn't matter I'm hooked.

What can i say about this place. Modern atmosphere, *GREAT* wait staff. I lived behind this place for 3 months and got to know the employees fairly well. A few homebrewers, very knowledgable in beer.

They had a nice selection, no Russian River brews on tap when I was there, but they did have some El Toro, one my favorite Cali breweries, and I think their El Duece tops Pliny.

The food was superb pub, delicious parm garlic fries and great burgers. For pub food, it was great, a nice bar and if you are in Redwood City, I could not recommend a better establishment.
