Reviewed from notes.

Pours a moderate yellowish color that is quite cloudy and has a nice white head. Nose is yeast, wheat, and light citrus. The taste is wheat and citrus with a bit of a yeasty kick. Nice body with good carbonation. A bit heavy but drinks well.

Served in a weizen glass at the brewpub.

Continuing my march through Piece's offerings. This one pours a hazy straw topped by a finger of lightly off-white foam. The nose comprises banana, clove, light orange peel, and vanilla. The taste brings in more of the same, complete with a veritable blast of bananas and cream. The body is a light medium, with a very light moderate carbonation and a smooth-as-hell feel. Overall, a very strong hefe, possibly the highlight of my visit today.

First had: on tap at the brewpub

Review from notes. Hazy straw-yellow pour, topped with a cap of foamy white head; moderate retention and a bit of lacing. Yeasty aroma, wheat, banana esters, light spice and a bit of citrus. More of the same in the taste, bready yeast, banana and clove, light citrus, wheat...pretty much a typical hefe. Medium body, fairly smooth, decently drinkable overall.

Appears a hazy cloud of gold with a white head that slowly fades into a mild cap. Scattered bits of lacing are left around the glass.
Smell is of tart wheat, ripe bananas, vanilla wafers, cloves, ripe fruit, and a touch of sulfer.
Taste is of the aromas with the classic Bavarian hefe yeast filled flavor coming through with a gentle tartness.
Mouthfeel is medium bodied, spritzy, and very deliciously refreshing.

On tap at Piece...Medium gold with a light orange tint...The aroma is nice with oranges, wheat and yeast nice and balanced. The taste is a little disappointing, too sweet with banana, needs to be more balanced. Easy to drink but nothing special.

Overall, pretty good.

This beer pours a cloudy pale orange color. The head is two inches in height, and recedes slowly into a lingering cap of foam. The aroma is of cloves, banana, and tangy wheat. The taste is full of banana with cloves in the aftertaste. The mouthfeel is medium bodied with lively carbonation. Overall, this is one of the better American versions of a hefe. I could easily drink this all summer long.

A: Hazy orange in color. Served with a 1/4" of white head. Active carbonation visible.

S: Bubblegum and floral citrus aroma

T: Chewy orange-flavored beer. Orange blossoms. Bubblegum. Fruity, with a light sweetness.

M: On the lighter side with heavier carbonation.

D: A very good hefe that I found quite easy to drink. Great fresh flavors. Quite enjoyable.

A - Cloudy, medium color of gold with a slight orange tint. Pretty good sized, creamy, thick, fluffy, white head. Good retention that settles into a nice creamy layer of lace.

S - Some banana along with a good amount of malted wheat aroma. Good amount of clove and some other spice and a fair amount of vanilla present.

T - Good amount of malted wheat and bready flavors. Fair amount of banana present, although it isn't the most banana forward Hefeweizen. Faint bubblegum taste toward the finish. A touch of lemon and yeast tartness along with a slight tangy taste.

M - Medium body with a good amount of carbonation. A bit of a zesty and tingly feel.

D - Very drinkable beer with a nice refreshing feel and a fair amount of zesty taste. Overall a very refreshing beer.

Notes: A nice refreshing Hefeweizen. Not the most banana/bubblegum forward, but it is a good, refreshing beer and has a good spiciness. Very enjoyable beer, especially on a warm summer day.

This is a delicious hef! Porus a dark orange color and is unfiltered. Smell is lemony and wheaty, mostly and the taste is very refreshing. Citrusy, lemony and wheat more than the clovey spiced taste, which suited me very well. I really thought this was great.

5.5% ABV. Cloudy and gold in color. Thick white fluffy head. Good retention. A few patches of lace left on the glass. Looks pretty tasty.

A whiff of tartness in the nose up front. A bit of clove and bubblegum. Pretty nice aroma here.

Tart up front with a bit of banana and bubblegum. Just a bit of earthy hops to balance things out.

Medium body, with a higher amount of carbonation, fitting in well with the style. Very easy to drink. Solid.

Draft at brewpub.

Poured cloudy yellow color with an average fizzy white head that mostly lasted with fair lacing. Moderate banana, clove and citrus aroma. Medium body with a sticky texture. Medium sweet flavor with a solid sweet wheat finish of moderate duration.

Good refreshing brew.

it pours a little more amber than usual. with a dense but smaller foam than expected. the smell is a nice blend of wheat and banana with an interesting lingering maltiness. the taste is backed up by that maltiness. this hef is a bit denser tasting. it has wheat and fruitness but it also has a very subdued hop and malt that lingers. a good beer. light but essentially more american than german. still excellent for a brewpub beer.

alcohol contain is 5.5 to 6 percent. a bit stronger than usual

Banana, clove, yeast and a bit of citrus in the scent. Banana, clove, bread, citrus, yeast, light sugar, and a hint of earth and more bread in the finish. A very good example of the style.

Had on tap at Piece. Served in a 22 oz. Hefe glass.

A: Pours a very chilled and hazy dark straw that bubbles to a very light brown at the body of the glass. A fluffy, pure white head forms on the pour, about one finger in height, that stick with me down the entire glass. Splotches of lace follow me down the glass. Looks perfect.

S: Great notes of wheat, clove, peppery yeast and a subtle bubblegum.

T: The taste follows the nose, but there is a little bit more peppery yeast bite with a little less sweet bubblegum. The wheat becomes more prevalent as well with a slight malt character.

M: Medium bodied, but leaning towards the lighter side. Little coating quality that really lets the yeast resonate in your mouth.

O: It's obvious why this beer has won multiple awards. It's very delicious and I would have again and again. All the characteristics in the taste really mesh well.

Piece Brewery Top Heavy Hefeweizen served on tap

Appearance: Small head with a cloudy golden body.

Smell: Strong wheat

Taste: Wheat, yeast, and slight spice.

It is very refined and smooth. It is also very flavorful and not heavy. It's a very good hefeweizen.

Review based on a beer-judging sized sampler. Appropriately cloudy, even a little white like a Belgian. Has an extreme banana and lemon nose that overwhelms the other hefeweizen spices. Very "German," maybe even a little overdone. But you don't need a lemon, that's for sure.

Wow. This might be the best Heffe I've ever had. Gorgeous cloudy/murky golden pour with copious amounts of beautiful foamy white head with thick and sticky lacing left all around the glass. Aroma is a pleasant mix of spices with some malty/wheaty/yeasty notes. Flavor is similar, but MUCH more intense and absolutely delicious. Amazingly complex and flavorful considering the 5.5% abv. Incredibly drinkable - I could honestly drink this stuff all day every day. Surprisingly substantial and chewy mouthfeel. One of the best beers I've had period. LOVE LOVE LOVE this stuff. Once you take a sip its quite clear why this beer has one so many awards, including GOLD at the 2006 World Beer Cup.

This is a truly fantastic brew - I'm already looking forward to the next time I get to try some.

A: Pours a burnt orange color with a nice 2 inch white head.

S: Fruity and wheaty. Smelled of banana and spices.

T: Very fruity taste most prominantly orange. Had good wheat and spice taste as well.

M: Very smooth and crisp.

D: Easy to drink. Would be perfect for warm climates. Very refreshing but full of flavor at the same time.

From notes of 08/20/2006 visit to Piece, Chicago IL.

This one is for sure a Hefe Weizen, in the classic German style. Dark orange in color with a good heavy cloud and haze of yeast. The head is a creamy white foam with good retention. The lace is sticky and thick.
The smell is heavy with banana, citrusy lemon zest, big yeasty breads and a hint of spicy clove.
Taste is dead on for the style. Citrusy lemon, banana, and big bready yeast, and light spiced flavors.
Crisp mouthfeel. Moderately active carbonation. Medium bodied. I know it is an old cliche, but it was actually refreshing.
Well done and very drinkable. After I try all the other beers at Piece I will have to have a few more of this one.

Lots of stolen sips from other friends' weizen glasses. Looks exactly the way a hefe should, beautiful cloudy yellow-orange color with a giant creamy head. I actually like the color much better than a lot of the German hefeweizens I've had (and defintely more than witbiers)-- it's less yellow.

The aroma is loads of banana and other esters, malted wheat, oranges, and spicy phenols. Tastes exactly like it smells, so much so that it doesn't merit its own paragraph, but it's spectacular, maybe the best hefe I've ever had. In a lot of ways it's more of a hefeweizen than even Weihenstephaner-- the banana estery flavor is stronger than I've ever tasted it before, and that's saying a lot, especially for this style.

Mouthfeel is crisp and creamy at the same time, which sounds impossible, but is pretty awesome. Drinkable as hell, even for a Hefe.

In a style with lots of German history and more lackluster American attempts than I'd like to count, Top Heavy is really stands out as an awesome beer and a great style example.

Pours a cloudy orange color with a thick white head that fades to a thin cap with minimal lacing.

Smell is fruity and yeasty, as one would expect. Notes of banana, orange, and spicy cloves.

Taste is consistent with the smells, although the fruitiness (particularly the banana) is more pronounced. Definitely has that distinct Bavarian yeast taste.

Mouthfeel is light and carbonated and lacks any discernible alcohol, making it eminently drinkable and a great beer for a hot summer day.

This is a great Hefeweizen one of the best by an American brewery.

On tap at Piece Brewery Chicago.

Holy hell! What a great beer! True this is my favorite style of beer, but this drink was damn near perfect! Appearance was perfect cloudy yellow with thin white head. Smell was yeasty and wheaty, with strong banana notes. Taste was just perfect...I would have gotten another one had I not already had the Stout and Kolsh! Mouthfeel was smooth and crisp. Overall a damn awesome beer! I'd make the trek to Wicker Park just to grab this one again and again.

The color was a beautiful hazy gold/amber.
The mouthfeel was a bit sticky, but alright.
Drinkable only in gulps, but this was due to the flavor, which felt overwhelmingly fruity.

Overall as a beer it was ok, but an award winning beer? Perhaps with someone, but definitely not me. When I drink beer I like it to taste more like beer and less like a fruit bowl, but it looks like this beer appeals to others, so this is just my opinion.

One bias is that I think fruit in beer is heresy punishable by a grisly and slow death, so perhaps the lemon wedge simply enraged me.
