My girlfriend and I went to Piece Pizza and tried a number of beers. This one was delicious. They all hit a certain standard that I appreciated. The waitress forgot we ordered these. I had to remind her but that's okay. My girlfriend was in a good mood that day, probably because we went shopping in Wicker Park. SHE DOES NOT LIKE BEER. I like this one, it was spicy.

Served in a tulip at Piece 1/3/07.

A: Dark, dark brownish black. Absolutely no light getting through this one. No head with minimal lacing.

S: Aromas of toasted malt, belgian yeast, bananas, and clove.

T: Flavors of walnuts, cardamom, banana nut bread, and brown sugar. Roasted malts fend off the sweetness, with the help of some hops, to keep the flavors very balanced.

M: Very creamy and full.

D: Excellent complexity and balance for a style that can be waaay too sweet. This is growlerable!

First had: on tap at the brewpub

Review from notes. Dark opaque woody brown color, small white head, some retention, random spots of lacing on the glass. Toast and roast in the aroma, Belgian yeast, light fruit esters and a bit of spice. Taste of sweet malts, banana and clove, caramel, toasted grains, overripe peach. Smooth mouthfeel, on the heavier side of medium body, and a pretty nice drinker overall.

Tasted some of this from a growler at our winter beer tasting. Pours a pretty red/mahogony/brown color with a nice, thick head that leaves plenty of lace on the glass. The scent is of pines/hops and perhaps mint as well. The taste is quite complex. Caramel and spicey mint. As the beer warsm, there's some malty/grossy/orange tones as well. The beer is very, very thick. Overall, quite yummy (and I like the name quite a bit as well)!

On tap at the brewpub. Deep mahogany, modest head with a bit of retention, little lacing. Very attractive.

SMELL strong malty sweetness, cherry like dark fruit, mild Belgian yeast character. Moderately complex.

TASTE Big sweet malty base, lightly belgian yeasty, dark fruit and some mild bitterness emerging late. Smooth, pretty well balanced and fairly complex.

FEEL med/full body, richly sweet and malty, moderate viscosity, some warming with a drying and bitter finish.

OVERALL a surprisingly good beer from a brewpub I'd never heard of. It definitely wasn't made in Belgium, no by Allagash, Unibrou or Midnight Sun. But it's good and any homebrewer would be super stoked to have made it. Worth trying if you ever have the chance.
