On tap at Piece.

A: Copper-gold with a decent white head.

S: Sweet sticky citrus and tropical fruits (clementine, apricot, pineapple, mango) with a malty base.

T: More fruity hop notes with some hefty malt sweetness. Vanilla cake, grapefruit, peach, mango. Some clove-like esters as well.

M: Between light and medium-bodied with moderate carbonation.

O: Good fruity hop notes here, with a malt/ester character that almost reminds me of a hefeweizen. Interesting.

First had: on tap at the brewpub

Review from notes. Clearish golden-yellow pour, with about a half inch of fizzy white head that displayed moderate retention and a bit of spotty lacing. Aroma was hop-driven, citrus and light notes of tropical fruit. More malty goodness in the taste, citrus zest, tropical fruit rind, over a solid sweet malts base. Pretty basic, pretty good. Light-medium body, sufficiently bitter and dry in the finish, moderate carbonation, pretty easily drinkable.

Served in a nonic pint glass at the brewpub.

What's a visit to a brewpub without trying out the house IPA, eh? It pours a clear gold topped by a finger of off-white foam. The nose comprises bright orange zest, grapefruit, peach, mango, and a touch of sweet caramel. The taste still focuses on the aforementioned citrus fruits, but now it seems as though the rinds and peels hold sway over the flesh. Some pine needles and a bit more caramel join in as well. The body is a light medium, with a light moderate carbonation and a dry, kinda sticky finish. Overall, a nice IPA, but one that can't fulfill the promise given in the nose on the tongue. (Here's hoping that made sense...)

On tap at Piece.

Appearance: Hazy bright orange with a white head that settled quickly.

Smell: Hoppy on the front end that smelled mostly fruity. Nothing jumping out at me.

Taste: More flavorful than the nose would have had me believe. Really great citrus hop bitterness up front that balances out really well and finishes smooth.

Mouthfeel: Medium-bodied and quite drinkable.

Overall: Nice balance and smoothness that should leave most palates happy. Great with some pizza.

Had on tap at Piece. Served in a nonic pint glass.

A: Pours a golden amber color with a pure white head. Some splotches of lace are left behind.

S: Nice balance between light fruit, grass and sweet malts. Definitely on the lighter end though and I really got to dig my nose in there to get anything.

T: Taste is a little richer with some grassy hops, mild bitterness, a little citrus rind and the sweet, malty finish to give it a little balance.

M: Medium to light bodied. Pretty drinkable with nice carbonation level as well.

O: Solid overall. Nicely balanced, but I prefer several other offerings from Piece in the hops category.

A pretty hoppy IPA.There's definitely a malt backbone buried in there. Went very well with my spinach and garlic pizza! Not a heavy amount of citrus, but its there... a hazy orange pour with some lacing left behind of the quick receading head... Definitely want to try and get in for a pie & growler buy on the Sunday -- what a great deal!

On-tap at the pub... The body looks like a lightly unfiltered dark gold, ugly side. There is an off white head, ok retention and lacing... The aroma is pretty good but subdued; nice grassy hop, a hint of oranges, light alcohol finish. Smells great... The taste isn't as nice, has a rough finish to it, too much bitter pine and alcohol, seems like a dipa. Still pretty good, just not great.

One of their better ipas, I'd have again.

Sunday special is pretty awesome...Large pizza and a growler at Piece in Chicago for $25. I originally wanted the Captain Kick Ass which they were out of and was pleasantly pleased with Dysfunctionale. The smell is my what I expect out of great IPA's. Hoppy Pine and robust citrus. Wish I could drink it through my nose. The taste is not far off from the smell. Bitter and Hoppy to my hearts content. Gotta say that this is one of my favorite IPA's to date. Pizza here isn't my favorite, but I'm definitely go back for the beer.

Picked up a growler from Piece brewery. I just have to say, the Sunday special is truly epic. Large pie and growler for $25; a steal! Anyways, poured into a tumbler from the growler.

A: Pours a pretty hazy homebrew amber.

S: It has a soft citric hop scent but the malt is also noticeable.

T: The taste follows the smell. Subtle hops well balanced by the malt. Delicious! Very flavourful!

D: Excellent drinkability! The alcohol is completely masked and the beer has the perfect level of carbonation.

Overall: This is a very well made beer. It is a great example of the no-coast IPAs that are carving their own name in the great American craft beers. It is just bursting with flavour and although there are better IPAs out there, this is definatley not one to pass up. Couple that with the excellent bargain and great food available from Piece and its a steal!

Note: I went to Rome for a month last summer and like nearly everyone, was blown away by the pizza. Out of the many pizzerias I've eaten at in New York and Chicago, this is the closest to a Roman pizza that I've had. This beer is also the perfect brew to pair with their delicious margherita pizza.

Do yourself a favour and get over to Piece!

Piece Brewery Dysfunctionale served on tap

Appearance and Smell: Small head with good lacing. Dark-golden clear with a WONDERFUL hoppy flower and fruit/berry aroma.

One of the most flavorful IPA I've had. Not as malty as described, but it is very tasty. I would be sure to have another next time I'm in Chicago.

The orange glow of a sunset sneaking through a big billowing head of fluffy white clouds.
The heavy smell of a citrus orchard. Intense, yet enticing.
The bitter humor is watching some old bitch get squirt in the eye while eating her morning grapefruit.

Poured from a fresh growler into my FFF's pint glass...

Pours a hazy golden amber, copious fluffy white head, 3 fingers worth. Head dissipates fairly quickly but leaves tons of chunky lacing all the way down the glass...

Citrusy hop presence, bit of pine behind the fruity aromas...very nice...

Wow, this is one fine tasting beer! Nice and hoppy up front, grapefruit, lemon, with some grassy/floral flavors as well. Hops are prevalent but balanced perfectly with the bready malt background....

Pretty damn near perfect mouthfeel, very smooth and creamy. Thick and coating. Medium bodied with good carbonation...

What a great beer, very pleasantly surprised by this one. Sharing a growler with some friends and kinda wish I was more greedy and just horded it all for myself...

Appearance: Clear medium-gold color. Huge white head stand that persists throughout and leaves sticky lacing.

Smell: Prominent hop aroma with a citrusy, piney, grassy character. Some fruitiness is present, as well.

Taste: Medium-high hop flavor with citrus, floral, and pine aspects. Hop bitterness is somewhat less than I expected, although it in no way detracts from this IPA. Medium malt flavor that is mostly clean.

Mouthfeel & Drinkability: Mostly smooth; medium-bodied. Medium-dry finish. This is a fantastic piney hopped IPA that is not overbearing with the hop bitterness and thus is quite drinkable and enjoyable.

This is quickly one of my favorite IPAs. It has a lighter hue and the texture is so smooth. It rolls across your lips and goes fantastic with pizza. The flavor has orange hints that mix spectacularly with the right balance of hops. It is not always on tap at Piece in Chicago. But when it is, do not pass it up.

Pours a cloudy orange color with a small white head.

Scent of peach, grapefruit, citrus and hops. A nice tropical fruit scent with a good hop presence.

Taste of grapefruit, resin, hops and grain. A bit weaker than the scent led on, but still a good IPA.

Mouthfeel is light bodied and sticky with good carbonation.

A good beer, but it becomes a bit of a chore to drink it after a while.

6.5% ABV. Pours a cloudy gold/orange color. Fluffy white head holds together well for a few minutes. Nice patches of lace.

Juicy citrus, and a whiff of pine in the nose. Slight caramel malt note as well. Smells well hopped.

A bit of a lighter caramel malt backbone opens things up. Big juicy, citrusy hop flavors. Still very well balanced. Alcohol very well hidden.

Medium body, with good carbonation. Very easy to drink. A very nice selection here.

On tap at the brewery this beer is described on the menu as being a "big malty ale with an obscene American hop character." Lets put that claim to the test. It pours a hazy amber orange with a thick sticky khaki head.

The smell is hops baby. This one delivers with some bold citrusy notes and a good balance of malt in the background.

Taste is initially bitter with a citrus bite with a strong malts. Nice astringency but this beer shines in the balance of hop and malt. Well done.

The finish is sweet and malty with a lovely pinch to the tongue. Moderate carbonation makes this beer really work.

A-Hint of orange touched golden yellow with a thin white head that left webby lace behind.

S-Light citrus hop kick and a bit of sweetness.

T-Sharp citrus hop smack balanced well by a smooth slide of sweet caramel malt.

M-Ledium-light bodied with a crisp dry finish. Light lingering bitterness.

D-Lacking a bit on the aroma but makes up for it in the taste with the hop flavour. A very refreshing and crisp quaffer.

Pours a hazy orange with a big head. Good sticky lacing. Tremendous hoppy aroma. Resinous pineapple and apricot. Tastes awsome. Huge pineapple and apricot flavour with a noticable but smooth bitterness. Sweet malt character barely peeks through. The malts are there but subtle. they do their job but get the hell out of the way of hops like they should in this style of beer. Body and mouthfeel are very smooth. Easy drinkin and super good beer. Kind of makes me want to start looking for jobs in Chicago.

Hazy dull gold with orangish highlights. Decent white head dissipates rather quickly.

Gorgeous nose of citric American hops mixed with deep crackery malt. Orange rind and tangerine in spades, with an underlying spiciness. Great balance and complexity.

The promise of the nose carries through to the palate where all of the components of the beer hit the palate as a seamless wave. The hops barely dominate the malt, and both are wonderfully intense, but not at all overwhelming. Great beer.

Mouthfeel is a bit on the thick side, but it lends a sensuous character to the experience. Carbonation is nice and low, allowing the beer to have its way with the palate.

Very delicious, sessionable beer and a terrific example of the style.

Pours red-amber with two fingers of white head and gobs of lacing.

The aroma is very citric and a little piney. The flavor opens up with some grapefruit and maybe pineapple from the hops, and finishes with strong bitterness. The malt backbone isn't really evident until the beer warms. Bright mouthfeel, super-drinkable. This one is growlerworthy for sure.

It's every Piece beer ever made, but it's pretty damn good anyway.

This was an IPA and it arrived with no head on a very cloudy, deep-amber colored beer. The nose was highly hoppy and the mouthfeel was medium with a good, hoppy presence on the palate. The finish was so grapefruit-citrusy that it left little question as to what style of beer it was.
