I stopped in to the Piece brewery while in Chi-town on business and came across this seasonal brew on the tap menu. I asked my waitress what the Dark Bier was like, and she said "It's like a dark beer." No kidding. Very astute.
Despite the enlightening description, I decided to try a pint and was pleasantly surprised. It is a dark german style lager with a strong malty presence. It went down smooth and reminded me of a german welterburger.
No one else has reviewed this beer so I wonder if it was a one time batch. Likely so, given the enthusiastic sales pitch by the wait staff.

Reviewed from notes.
Pours near black with a very thin head and not too much lacing. Nose is roasted malt and not much else. Taste has a light roast character with a hint of sweetness but is mostly pretty dry. Feel is light with good carbonation. Easy sipper but nothing is really there.

Had on draft at Piece
A-deep brown in color with hues of red pouring a very thin white head with a lot of bubbles
S-light nose of black malt and a slightly roasted aroma followed by a hint of pale malt
T-light taste of black malt, hints of caramel, lots of pale malt, and a slightly bitter finish
M-light to medium body, relatively smooth, and lots of carbonation
D-not a great beer, very light body and almost a watered down taste

This bottle was a left-over from the 2006 GABF judging and was provided to me as a reward for my volunteer efforts. Thanks a million to GABF and to Piece Brewing for the opportunity.
Label on the bottle classifies this beer as category #26 (European Dark). Pours a half finger tan/brown head over a dark brown/mohagheny liquid. Too dark to see through, and gorgeous edging colors when held to light. Smells potently chocolate with drying grassiness and a touch of roast. A sweet chocolate underneath. Aside from the malt, not alot going on.
Tastes delicious. Drying chocolate with an underplaying wet malt sweet. A bit roast with the sweet rising in the end. Aftertaste is dry from grassy and earthy hops. They almost come across as a touch cardboard-like. Near the bottom of the glass, the beer is much more dry and I get iron in the aftertaste. A sour in the aftertaste is accompanied by a gentle acrid from the carbonation. No esters to behold, this beer is quite clean. Mouthfeel is md, bordering on md-thick and carbonation is medium high. More than I would have liked. Judged as per a european dark, rather than belgian dark as it is presently classified here on BA.

On tap at the brewery into a mug...Pours a watery looking dark brown with TONS of amber highlights that is slightly darker than a coca cola. A very light tan head that is gone quickly...The aroma and taste are all a sweet gernam bock. Aroma is super matly with sweet brown sugar and caramel and the taste is the same, almost too sweet though and not enough bite to make you want to drink more. Easy to drink at 4% but not worth getting.
