A - Poured a clear, golden-yellow color with a small, short-lived white head of bubbly foam. It left sudsy residue on the glass.

S - It smelled of grains and sweet caramel with a touch of floral notes.

T - Good grain flavor with sweet caramel as a backbone. It had just a touch of spicy bitterness.

M - It was crisp, sharp and fairly smooth. A light to medium bodied brew with a dry finish.

O - This is a pretty nice Kolsch-style ale. It would be nice and refreshing on a hot Chicago day.

Reviewed from notes.

Pours very light and clear with a bit of yellow coloring. White head and minor lace. Nose is straw and some very delicate fruit. Taste is mostly just straw and grain. Light and crisp. Lawnmower beer without much flavor and does not have any defining characteristics.

Piece Brewery Golden Arm served on tap

Kolsch style, clear amber in color. Medium head. Warm malts and lots of carbonation. It has a fair bitterness to the finish with some hops flavor. It was very light, which is typical of a Kolsch, but I expected more fruit flavorings.

This is an ok pale ale. It didn't feel like a true Kolsch with the lightness.

On tap into a tasting glass at the brewery...One word describes this beer LIGHT. A light straw light in color super clear, light in aroma and taste, and the feel is lighter than water if that's possible. Now it is smooth to drink with a crisp finish. However, the taste is almost dead, light hops, but skunk is there.

nothing special here, can't even endorse as a session at this point.

I had this one on tap at the Piece brewpub on 2/21/2009.

A= This Kolsh poured a crystal clear gold color with a 1/2" snow white head and lots of carbonation release.

S= Light malt sweetness with a bready character and a blessedly faint sulphur smell.

T= Taste was bready and mildly sweet. No hops to speak of, but the sweetness stayed in check and lead to a dry finish.

MF= Thin side of medium bodied with a big crisp effervescence.

D= This was a really good kolsh that was totally refreshing and went very well with Piece pizza.

Appearance: Sent to me with no head, I mean this is a brewpub right?Wtf. Very light gold, sparklingly clear.

Smell: Faint aroma of the hops.

Taste: The taste was good for me, hoppy, crisp refreshing, I could see chugging this at a barbeque. My first conscious example of a Kolsch, so admittedly I don't really know what to expect.

Mouthfeel: Fizzy.

Drinkability: My least favorite beer of the night but still a good beer. Very drinkable.

Had this brew on tap at Piece. Pours very golden with a whitish light head. Smell is bready, lagery maltiness and slighty sweet. Taste is on the sweet malty side and is very crisp, refreshing and bubbly. Very easy drinking and a pretty damn good kolsch, I thought. Solid beer.

A decent Kolsch. This was the first beer I tried at Piece, after having drank Dark Lord all day. I really needed something lighter at that point, and this satisfied my craving.

The beer pours to a very clear yellow with a thin white head. Retention and lacing are poor, but it has a nice carbonation.

The smell is good. Some pilsener malt with a good amount of noble hops. A slight fruity ester profile, though it is very clean and nondescript. The flavor is very similar. The beer is quite bitter for the style, which I don't find to be a bad thing. Spicy, herbal hops. Light berry esters.

The mouthfeel is odd. Has a bit of a chalky mouthfeel that I noticed in all of Piece's beers, as if there is a thin layer of dust particles that are washed down after the swallow. Almost fuzzy like a wine with LOTS of tannins, yet it lacks the astringency. The carbonation is sharp. Pretty big in body for the style. Easy to drink, but nothing too interesting, and still plenty of other beers to try.

Straw golden with moderate white head and good lacing throughout. Smell is a touch grassy but more biscuity than anything else. It's really quite weak though the place isn't the best for smell. Taste is better than weak aroma lets on. Good solid grain husk flavor. Grassy flavors are in place and show themselves but aren't overdone like they easily can be. Slight fruit esters in there. A touch sweet toward the back. Finish has a slight off flavor that can be ignored for only so long. A really good beer until the end.

Had this one at the pub recently, had forgotten they were making a Kölsch and was happy I took the time to read the descriptions.

Quite a nice Summer quaffer with the slightest of DMS from the Pils malt.

Very clean, flavorful and refreshing brew, if a little flat on head retention.

(Served in a Nonic)

A- This beer pours a golden yellow clear body with a thin white ring of foam. It had good carbonation of tiny bubbles that stemmed from the bottom of the glass.

S- The smell of light pale malt with noble hops was very smooth and to style. As it warmed there was a bit more of a corn aroma to it.

T- The green noble hops and pale malt had a light fresh taste with that distinct Kolsch flavor (not the typical skunky flavor but the fresh flavor). That sulfury almost sweet flavor that is nice in small quantities. The flavor was quickly wiped off the palate by the strong taste of carbonic acid in the fizzy finish. As it warmed the pale malt flavor started to taste more like corn, which was a bit of a turn-off.

M- The light mouthfeel had a strong fizz texture that took over soon after each sip.

D- This beer had to much "Kolsch flavor" and it was a bit overpowering with the sulfur and corn notes but the fizz was the most cumbersome feature of this beer. If the qualities were softer it could be a good session beer for those American Adjunct Lager fans.

Reviewed from a beer-judging sized sampler. Very spritzy and lemony. Has a thin head with some lacing over a straw colored, slightly cloudy body. Grassy hops, just a little sour, and a nice clean finish. Yeah, that pizza is pretty good (thin-crust on a cracker-style crust is Chicago’s “other” pizza, and they do it pretty well here).

Golden Arm: A German style Kolsch, on tap at Piece brewpub. Straw colored, very tall white head, not too much retention, and no lace. The taste was a fairly big disappointment. It had a sulfur undertone, and was lacking any semblance of balance. Crisp finish that disappeared right off the palate. Not too good.
