Served in a shaker pint glass at the brewpub.

Rockin' my way through the Piece oeuvre (or, at least, what's on tap this day). This selection pours a mostly clear russet-sienna topped by a finger of wan off-white foam. The nose comprises mild toffee, oak, earthy greens, and a hint of green apple skin way the hell in the background there. The taste brings in more of the same, with some more oak, a touch of both coffee and tea, and a bit more earthiness in everything involved. The body is a light medium, with a light moderate carbonation and a fluid feel. Overall, a nice little rye ale, one that makes sure the rye doesn't dominate the proceedings (though it would have been nice to have a bit more spice in there...).

No worryin' here. This piece beer quills the palate as comfortably as putting on those favorite jeans. Masterfully balanced and flavored for high rate of enjoyment, this beer accompanies a wide array of food pairings and is characterful enough to stand on its own.

Pouring an almost-clear light copper color, the amber highlights casts quite an aspiring glow. Capped with an off-white froth, the beer shows solid retention and lace without overselling it.

Caramel and citrus play a harmonic tune to the olfactory senses with moderate malt richness pinned against notes of grapefruit and orange peel. Complementary notes of earthy grasses, spicy grain, estery fruits, and light butterscotch promise the notion that complex flavors reveal with each return to the glass.

Skillfully balanced, the beer seems inspired from stronger English bitters as the rich caramel sweetness hinges on toffee and serves as the introduction of tangerines for a rounded marmalade character. Spicy and broadly earthen rye emerges from the sweetness with just enough grainy bite to bridge into citrusy and earthy hops- white grapefruit, fresh cut grass, zested oranges, and shaven pine all work to balance the beer without overriding the firm malt base.

The beer's medium body is aided with ample carbonation to give the sweetness a lift from the mouth and providing a lightly expansive fullness to its weight. Lightening considerably at mid palate, the carbonation quickly dissipates and allows for fleeting malt, spicy grain, hop resins, and light woody dryness to crispen the beer at finish.

It's one of those beers that you mean to reflect upon and assess- concentrating on its taste, texture, and impressions. But before you know it you have an empty glass in front of you, assisted by good conversation and enjoyment of the friendly brewpub. So the only thing worryin' about is getting another.

Worryin' is a nice Rye. The rye is not prounounced, overly-spicy, or over-the-top. It is subtle as the beers and very refreshing. On a hot summer day this was ambery-brown with a little head. it was thirst-quenching without being watery or too light. I tried this with other samplers at the brewery.

Poured on tap at piece into a pint glass. Pours a nice dark brown color

Good malty aromas of caramel and toffee. lacking some depth and complexity in the aromas

medium bodied with a good feel and flavors of caramel, toffee and some malt flavors

This was a very drinkable beer, but lacking some real complexity and depth to it. A bit singular in both the aromas and flavors, but a good beer nonetheless

On tap at Piece Brewery, Chicago.

Appearance is dark yellow, almost brown. Smell is very malty and caramely. Taste is very sweet and biscuity. Not a bad session beer. Overall I'd recommend this beer, though I prefer the stout and hefe from this brewery.

Reviewed from notes.

Pours a moderate amber copper color with a light head and some lacing. The nose is light citrus and spice with a bit of caramel. Taste is similar with slight hops and rye. A good bit of spice with a light caramel and fruit backbone. Good feel and drinks quite well; a nice rye beer.

From the notebook, June 2009....
On tap at the brewery.

Copper topped with a off-white head. Sweet bread-like malts balanced balanced by a mild hops. Maybe a little of caramel.

Interesting enough to keep it from getting boring, but not so interesting to get tiresome after a few. This would make a great session beer.

Paired up nicely with a slice of the house za.

I had this on tap into a tasting glass at Piece. The beer is dark gold with an orange tint. The aroma is a typical esb with light carmelish generic hops. Taste is light caramel with alcohol and hops as well. Its really watery to drink and in general just pretty boring.

on tap at the brewpub in Chicago. pours a deep copper color with a half finger of eggshell colored head that has mild retention and leaves no lacings.

aroma is of light caramel malts and a touch of carmelized sugar. some dark fruit notes are in the background, along with a very light spice from the rye.

taste is of light caramel malts and a very light nutty character in the background. reminiscent of a nut brown with a semi-dry finish.

mouthfeel is medium bodied with a malty texture and a sticky aftertaste.

drinkability is decent. not much rye comes through in the end, but overall it still works well as a brown-esque ale.

Great aroma! A very drinkable pale ale and has a great citrus hop aroma. Goes great with the pizza that they specialize in as well. One of my favorites that they have.

It has a dark amber hue and is slightly cloudy. Heavy mouth feel but still is easy to drink. The wife even likes them. It is a strong rye ale and has a crisp taste.

Deep amber color with a very slight head, no lacing. In fact, it was almost completely void of any head.

It smelled of caramel malt, slightly bitter hops, and strong rye.

It had an extremely bready, sourdough nose and a spicy, slightly bitter finish.

The mouthfeel was just ok. It was very watery but left a nice earthy-spice flavor on the tongue.

This went down extremely easy and this is a beer you can drink all night.

This was a decent brew that I did enjoy and could see myself having again. If you like rye beer, the flavor was good but the watery texture takes away from the overall experience.

On tap at Piece and served in a pint glass. This beer poured a darker golden hue with a short-lived head of off-white bubbles. Almost no lacing. The aroma consisted of sweet grainy malt and mildly herbal hops. The flavor was made up of caramel, moderately sweet malt, and a quick, clean hop finish. The mouthfeel was light and somewhat watery. Very drinkable. A nice session-style brew. Washes down the pizza quite nicely.

A-Deep copper with a light tan head that left some spotty lacing.

S-Musty malt and bit of nuttiness and not much else.

T-Dry, woody, quite malty without being too sweet, interesting. I assume this dryness is obtained by the rye malt addition.

M-Medium bodies with a nice easy smoothness.

D-Malty smoothness, care free and easy. The rye make for nice dryness without using a ton of hops.

Pours a brownish muddy chocolate color with a filmy white head. Smell is mild and well balanced between lightly aromatic hops and malt. Taste is fruity, with light hops but sweet and creamy as well. Very sessionable with prickly, bubbly carbonation. Pretty good beer.

Darkest Pale Ale I've ever seen. Decent tan head.

Smells nutty and smoky. Very malty.

Tastes malty with a slightly roasty characteristic and some hops at the finish. Smooth and medium-bodied.

A very distinctive pale ale in color and taste. Delicious from any perspective. I love it.

Opaque brown and brilliant clarity with some ruby highlights when held to light. Aroma of mainly pale malt, a hint of rye,and some noble hops sneak up toward the tail-end. The taste intially has a giant malt backbone and then the hops and esters do their thing in a great balancing act. Carbonation was one finger when presented in an imperial pint, head retention was normal with lacing throughout, and overall an entirely sessionable ale in any season. How many awards has this won? This could be easily catagorized as an ordinary or special bitter with rye added. Beautiful.

I finally got out to Piece and man what a great pizza those guys make, but seriously...

Its brown, perhaps one of the brownist beers I've ever beheld. Not murky per se, just has a nice thick-looking consistency. Head is white and a decent 1 1/2-2 fingers.

I always have trouble smelling out of pint glasses, but with no snifter around I'll make do. Like I said it could be me, but the smell was moderately malty with just enough hoppiness to let you know it was a beer. Malts are sweet, however.

Once again the malts have it. Nothing extraordinary, but it is perhaps the maltiest pale ale I've ever had. For a malt-mouth like myself, that ain't bad. Hops are very delicate and come out in the aftertaste with a slightly bitter, resiny finish. A pretty sweet (as in tastes sweet) brew.

Felt like an ale. Carbonation was moderate and crisp. Not too watery and not too thick.

At 4.50 a pint, it wasn't so bad for a decent brewpub brew. A little bitterness behind a hill of sweet malts, this beer was a great warm-up for the evening. I would recommend this as a great first beer if you ever visit Piece. Goes really well with their pizza, too, as the malts and the pizza crust both taste like sweetened bread.

Pours dark brown and cloudy with a two-finger white head and good lacing.

The aroma is lightly roasted malts, not terribly challenging.

Taste opens up with slight malty sweetness, with very light hop flavor and bittering on the finish. The hopping was too slight to identify, but it might have been Brit hops. This really tasted a lot more like an English bitter than an APA.

Mouthfeel is light and moderate to strongly carbonated.

Very drinkable, and very much in the spirit of British session beers.

All of this is good, because I basically wound up racing through it to get to more interesting beers. It's not badly-crafted, though, and if you're in the mood for a shut-your-brain-off session beer, this would be a very good one.

Last time I was in Chicago, I made a point of visiting the Piece brewery, which I knew won several medals at the 2006 GABF. The beer was served in a UK pint glass.

The beer pores black with a white head. The aroma is one of caramel and malt with very little hop characteristics. The flavor is malty and just slightly sour. As the glass emptied, I noticed some hop character emerge. Mouthfeel was light on the tongue with only a bit of carbonation.

Pretty good...I bought a growl to take home to WI.

From notes of 08/31/2006 visit to Piece, Chicago IL.

In the glass it was a deep dark brown liquid with garnet highlights around the edge. The head was a short-lived tight beige foam that fell to a wispy cap. The lace was spotty, but sticky.
The smell was sweet malts and light peppery hops. The taste was sweet malts, light spicy hops, a bit of sassafras, a vague mineral quality, and mild hop bitterness in the finish.
The medium-light body and carbonation level gave this one a crisp and clean mouthfeel.
I had more than one pint, so that should say something about the drinkability. I would have to say that while Worryin’ Ale is nothing stellar, it still is a well made and nicely balanced.
The Brewer reports the ABV at 3.8% to 4.5% making this one very sessionable.

A- This beer has a deep brown body with a foamy white head that turns spotty after a bit. There is a soft carbonation at the sides of the glass.

S- The soft smell of brown malt finishes with a nice spiciness from hops.

T- The taste of dry biscuit malt and some brown malt that is a bit more neutral or sweet has some faint hint of chocolate malt as it warms. There is a nice spicy hop flavor that is not really bitter but it is bold and it is enhanced by the carbonic acid bite.

M- This beer has a medium mouthfeel with a fizz texture in the finish.

D- This beer has some nice malt complexity with a great unique hop profile. It is an excellent session beer.

There is something decidedly mediocre about this beer. It is good, no doubt, but stands out as nothing particularly unique or special. There is a good mix of hops and maltiness, although I would have preferred a little more hops flavor. The beer poured a medium to dark brown hue with a small amout of head (from the pitcher). It has the makings of a great session beer however, because it is fairly light and goes down real smooth.

Wasn't totally impressed by this beer. Dark, dark mahogany brown body and soft-looking offwhite cream flake top. Nose held a rich fruitness, dry and hoppy. Nice. Any taste was overwhelmed by the massive carbonation that made my belly very very bloated. An average pale ale, with a good roasted touch to it. Clean finish, little aftertaste.

Review based on a beer-judging sized sampler glass: Nice amber ale color under a thin head. Lightly malted and hopped, but it leaves a good malty aftertaste (or is that the Wing Nut still in my glass talking?). Pretty good standard football-wachtin' beer.

Worryin’ Ale: On tap at Piece brewpub in Bucktown. An English style ale, very nice looking beer, with an off-white head and an almost ruby color. I like this style of beer, but was not overwhelmed with this edition. Seemed well balanced, and there was a flavorful hops bite. The beer seemed off in the malts, they seemed a little flat and lacking in flavor. This could be a fine beer, but the malts need to be tweaked.
