I have been going to Piece since it very first opened. In the past few years the beers have only gotten better, the seasonals especially -- the dark, strong and sweet Festivus and Truth, a new blonde doppelbock currently on tap called the "fornicator", the belgian style trippel, saison and a biere de garde, also currently on tap called Surrender. The Top Heavy Hefeweizen is true to form with a lovely bananaey thing going on. The Dark and Curvy is a very nice dunkelweizen. Really really fine beers.
The unfortunate thing that happened sometime after Piece opened was the Real World. They set up shop right across the street. One of the cast members (or several of them) were servers. The cameras were rolling in the bar, on the street, all around the neighborhood. Piece became hip, and the cell phone to person ratio increased exponentially.
Well, the real world is gone, but around 8ish Thursday through Saturday, the hip factor kicks in and the laid back atmosphere evaporates. I say unfortunate, but at the same time, I am very happy that Piece continues, and in fact is thriving. They just expanded their beer making capacity to keep up with demand. Now there is more good beer for everyone. But alas there is not any more space. so go early. Try these delicious beers. Also enjoy the white pizza with clam and bacon -- think clam chowder -- it works).
We've had great service at the bar. Again I am usually there before the hip crowd rolls in. But even if we have to stand in a room full of the hip and trendy, the beers are worth it. The selection of house beers usually includes 4-5 regular beers (golden arm, top heavy or big and curvy, dysfunction/worryin ale, dark bier in summer, flatiron porter or strong arm stout in winter) plus a couple seasonals. The guest taps are no slouches either -- three floyds, capital, sierra nevada and sometimes rogue along with a few european offerings: wittekerke, guinness, stella
This is a great Chicago beer stop -- easy to reach off of the Blue Line (Damen Stop), or from the Map Room, or from Clybourn Goose Island via North Ave. Clybourn Goose's housemade beer section is usually a tad better, but I give Piece the nod for food.
I am very happy for Jonathan Cutler, the brewer, that he got recognition this year at GABF as small brewpub/brewmaster of the year. IMHO it was well deserved.

This was an awesome place to hang out, grab a beer, and eat some pizza. Stopped in on a gorgeous Sunday night and of course the place was packed but the wait to get a beer was minimal. The wait for a pizza was a little bit longer, but that's to be expected. And it was well worth waiting!
They have a nice selection of rotating beers on draft and they make some really interesting and enjoyable brews. The atmosphere inside was really cool, high ceilings with sky lights to let in a lot of natural light. The dining/bar area were a big open room that was very inviting. I'd definitely recommend stopping in and checking this place out, very happy I did.
