The Moonshadow was the top beer being served by Willoughby Brewing when I visited them. The beer poured a nice copper clear with creamy white head and good lacing. The smell included bitter citrus hops and nice sweet malt. The taste included citrus, pine, and some floral notes all which was balanced nicely with malt. The mouthfeel was medium body with good carbonation. This beer is dangerous...at 7.5% it will cause people grief as they try to session...but it is so good!

still finishing this growler. Body is nice and orange. Accidental aggressive pour gave it a thick off white head. Huge, but thats because of the pour.

The smell is piney and resinous. Dank as well. Yesterday it had some citrus to it, but thats been replaced with pot. Maybe a hint of citrus, but not that much at all.

Had on-tap at the brewery.

Was dark-bronze in color with nice carbonation and an light-white head. It smelled of citrus and was very "clean". The citrus came through again in taste with the ever-present grapefruit that I get with many of the IPAs. Did not seem to have as much bitterness as the Rusty Rail from Willoughby, but had a stated 56 IBU. Bitterness definitely hung around at the end, but was not overpowering at all. Really loved this one.

I had a pint of this yesterday at the brewery and liked it enough to take a growler home. Poured into a pint glass
A: Burnt orange color with a half-finger head that lingers.
S: Typical but enjoyable IPA nose of light pine and orange rind. A hint of caramel.
T: Just like the nose; pine and citrus from the hops with a solid caramel backbone.
M: Perhaps a bit thin, but crisp and enjoyable.
O: A very solid IPA from a nice local producer.

On tap at Pizza Port Carlsbad

A: Hazy golden color with a nice off white head and some lacing.

S: Awesome. Big candied mango and citrus hops absolutely wallop your nostrils. Some caramel as well.

T: A really nicely done IPA. Big citrus hop flavor along with some pine and big hop resins. Might do well with a bit of malt to balance, but a really nice hop forward IPA.

Moonshadow IPA – 7.6%ABV

A: Moonshadow IPA pours a dark caramel color with a tight tan cap of head and some nice curtains of lace upon my glass.

S: Smells of sweet delicious candied fruits - orange peels and grapefruit. Some danky herbs and faint pale malts.

T: Clean hoppy fruit flavors. Dank hempen spice notes. Really puckers mid to back palate. Spikes of citrus, pine and grapefruit. Slight caramel candy sweetness overall. Juicy with hops. Definitely a dry hoppin’ IPA. Pretty tasty stuff.

M: More of a medium body with a somewhat filling affect. Slight creaminess with a good dose of puckering hops that dry up the finish.

D: Surprisingly good IPA coming out of Ohio with some real nice dank and juicy hop flavors. Pleasant caramel malt sweetness to balance.

Glad for the chance to try this one. Would definitely order again.

Had a "pint" on tap at the brewery.

It pours clear and orange-amber with a big head, which leaves some lace on the glass as I drink.

It's got an assertive hop aroma with some sweet malt underlying it. There's a hint of unpleasantness that I think is coming from the hops (sort of "cat piss"). It's not big, I didn't notice it until I really sniffed to write this review.

The flavor is solidly bitter, backed up with malt but not sweet. There's great hop flavor, too.

Medium bodied, not too full and fizzy it drinks easily. Although it is 7.5%, I don't taste the alcohol.

I'm liking it, it is quite drinkable, marred only slightly by the weirdness in the aroma.

solid west coast style IPA. Amber hue with creamy white head and good lacing. smells rich of hop bitterness, citrus (grapefruit and lemon zest, orange peel), grassy notes and solid sweet malt in the finish. Taste is a blast of pine hop and floral goodness followed up by a sweetness from the malt. Surprised to find the grapefruit and citrus at the tail end of the flavor here...and the hop bitterness and plentiful sour grapefruit linger for a while. good rich creamy feel. Nice beer, good and sticky for the ABV...lingering aftertaste is plesant.

Served on tap into a shaker glass at the brewpub

A- Poured a dark orange color with a one finger frothy head

S- Not a very strong aroma, but I got some nice grapefruit and orange citrus notes

T- Big grapefruit notes, grapefruit is the dominant taste, also orange peel, some pine, and some maltiness. There was a unique taste towards the finish almost seltzer like and slightly minty.

M- Nice and creamy with some prickly carbonation

O- A good IPA with a nice creamy mouthfeel and a big dominant grapefruit taste that I liked. This beer has an assertive bitterness, but also some nice sweetness to balance it out.

On tap at the Winter Warmer Festival. Enjoyed several samples of this.

After the Hop Jam and Peanut Butter Porter, I had to head back to Willoughby for one more of their beers. This was recommended by Rick as the latest beer they’re trying to make a flagship IPA. I liked this, certainly much more than any Willoughby IPA of years past, but I also think there are little areas for improvement.

Moonshadow is a hazy, cloudy yellowish gold color around the edges, with a brownish orange core. The beer has a white head and nice lace. The color is a bit dull looking, but the head and lace are excellent. Split the difference and call it a ‘4’.

The smell is also pretty good overall, best characterized as full of citrus hops, a touch of pine and perhaps some mint as well. There’s a pleasant smell, but I’d like just a bit more personality and pizazz. That said, this is enjoyable and my mouth is officially watering.
The taste starts off with the same qualities – citrus (grapefruit and orange pith), but adds a flowery element. I get more layers of pineapple, powdered sugar and flowers. There’s even a touch of tea leaf. Nice overall balance, not too ruinously bitter, with a sweet malt balance and no noticeable booze burn.

The beer was a touch on the creamy side. The medium body had lower carbonation – a bit of sparkle would help – but still this beer had a mouthfeel that was better than average. Not a bad beer at all – a touch more English leaning than my beloved West Coast style, but good nonetheless. Looking forward to making a trip to Willoughby soon for more!
