We visited here in 2014 and beside the fact the young waiter messed up our tab something awful, it was an excellent experience in Vienna. My German uncle recommended this spot, so having passed during a horse cart tour of Vienna, I figured the gods were dropping us a hint. Being (arguably) the oldest restaurant in the town, it has that wonderful random hive aspect that defines so many lovely old European spots. The four of us sat in a nook to ourselves, but with enough connection to the other customers to keep us from feeling distant. I ordered the cucumber soup to start, which to my surprise, the rest of the family thoroughly enjoyed. I frankly can't remember my entrée, but I do know we all enjoyed the experience.

I stuck with the waiter recommended Zwickelbier which proved to be both enjoyable and true to the style. Cloudy and malty, it was a meal unto itself.

Don't come here as a beer destination, but as a slice of what once was Viennese life. It's relaxing and enjoyable and a lovely addition to a visit.

Zum Güldenen Drachen (to the golden dragon), or The Gösser Bierklinik as it's now known, is, of course, a Gösser house. That is to say that it's a bar-restaurant that's associated with the Brauerei Göss in Göss-Leoben, Austria and pours mainly their beers. Never fear, you can get more than just Gösser beers here (because Gösser is part of the Brau Union), and the atmosphere more than makes up for any shortcomings you might think the draft list has.

The building dates back to 1406, and it has been a pub since 1683 (or perhaps 1566 as the logo indicates). It was recently renovated to its original appearance in 2000. It's located at Steindlgasse 4 on a cobblestone-lined street that's part of the route that the horse-drawn carriages take their tourists. They show this in their advertising, and it's true. Whether they have made a deal with the carriages or not, they often stop in front; and it's quite charming to be sitting in the bar area by the street enjoying your beer or meal and see them go by.

As you enter you have the choice to go straight and sit in the courtyard hall for a meal (non-smoking), but you'll probably want to take an immediate right and at least check out the "cosy bar" (smoking). From there, if the smoking bothers you, you can find a spot in one of their many nooks (the "Dragon-Stüberl", the "Gösser Niche", the "Artist-Stüberl", or the "Schönherr-Stüberl") where smoking is not allowed, but will probably carry over (as it's a small, fairly un-ventilated place). A move to one of their other dining rooms might be necessary at that point.

Throughout its entirety, the complex has charm. There are plank-wood floors in the cozy bar, terra-cotta tiles in others, and even a nicely finished herring-bone patterned wood floor in the "red" and "blue" rooms. The cosy pub is more basic, whilst some of the dining areas are more fancy. There are wood banquets to sit at, and curious items, photographs, paintings, lanterns, chandeliers, and horns and sculptures everywhere. Most importantly, here you will find authentic Wien mensch. There must be tourists that come here (I, for one), but the only people I sat near seemed to be locals.

There are 6 beers from the taps, and 2 blends:
Gösser Spezial
Gösser Stiftsbräu Dunkel
Gösser Zwickl
Reininghaus Pils
Schladminger Märzen
Altbrünner Gold
*Gemischtes (a blend of Spezial and Stiftsbräu)
*Gösser NaturRadler (with sweet lemon juice added)
- All of the beers are €3,20 for a ,3L and €4,30 for a ,5L except for the radler which is a little less.

Bottled beers include:
Edelweiss Hofbräu Weissbier (all of the Edelweiss are ,5L bottles @ €4,30)
Edelweiss Hefetrüb Weissbier
Edelweiss Dunkel Weissbier
Gösser Märzen (,5L @ €3,70)
Wieselburger Stammbräu (flip-top ,5L bottle @ €4,60)
Heineken Lager
Guinness Extra Stout
Gösser KräuterRadler (with herbs)
Schlossgold alkoholfrei
Strongbow Dry Cider

As for the food, I didn't try any, but the locals seemed to like it. It seemed a little pricey to me. For example, the Schnitzel is €21,00. I did pay €19,50 at Zum Weissen Rauchfangkehrer (to the white chimneysweep), although that's a much newer, "fancy" restaurant. Anyway, it's not a large menu but here are some examples:
Home-made Gulash €4,80
Market-fresh Salad €3,90 small €7,70 large
Spinach Dumplings €9,50
Roasted Turkey Breast €12,90 - the least expensive entree
Wiener Schnitzel €21,00

So, my suggestion would be to stop in during the day for a beer while walking around town. The food may be really good, as the number of locals eating there attests to, but you have other options.

A very nice place where you can have a good Gösser bier and god food a little away from all the tourist. We were the only tourist there, the rest of the guests seemed to be locals that come every day, which I find is a positive thing. I had the days special and it was good for a very reasonable price. I'll defenitly go again next time I am in Wien.

Gösser Bierklinik is nestled on a small street in downtown Vienna. If you have a map it's actually pretty easy to find, it's a very short walk from the Stephansplatz U-bahn stop. It's a dark restaurant with small tables, so a nice place if your looking for somewhere to have a quiet drink I'm pretty sure they had only Gösser beers on tap, natürlich! Either way, you are bound to find a Austrian/German style beer that you enjoy there. The waiter we had was very helpful in explaining a little about the beer they had and suggesting what we get. Like most other places in Austria they have a couple different glass sizes to choose from, so once you find one you like you can order the large glass! I ordered a bratwurst with sauerkraut and it was very, very tasty (especially with the beer). Food service was a little slow, but that's pretty normal around Europe. Definitely worth trying!

This place is located in downtown Vienna, on a side street just off one of the busiest tourist areas. It's actually fairly easy to miss, with an unassuming exterior and only a small hanging sign. Inside, the place is quite large, divided into four or five smaller rooms of various lighting. Red tile floor, cream plaster walls and ceiling. One room has a two story lit ceiling. Traditional farmhouse decorations. Light wood tabletops, dark wood chairs and benches. The menu was fairly extensive and not unreasonably priced, particularly for a downtown location. The service was very slow. There was no music on the sound system. The place was almost full at 1:00 p.m. on a Wednesday.

Seven taps and seven bottles, most of which, not surprisingly, were Gösser products, but they also offered some good, unusual guest beers. The beers were served in good shape, in appropriate glassware at the right temperature and with respectable heads. A place worthy of a visit when in the area.

Reasonably large bar/restaurant with maybe 7 beers on tap, and another 7 or 8 in botttle. There is a nice outside area as well, but we spotted up inside. Some of the brews include Edelweiss, Gosser (of course), Guiness Extra, etc.

The bartender was friendly enough, and quick to bring out more drinks. However, we were promptly kicked out at 11, which is a bit earlier than I would have preferred, but I understand that bars don't stay open just for me.

I did not have a chance to try any food, as I had eaten a giant brick of wienerschniztel just before I found this place.

Anyway, a nice place to sit and have a brew, but not a "must-visit" in Wien.
