12 oz can poured into a tulip at fridge-cellar temperature.

L – Pale amber color with a 3-finger bubbly, frothy, white head. Pretty nice retention and some patches of lacing. Crystal clear with a decent amount of bubbles.

S – Bready and mild caramel malt with orange, lemongrass, and mildly floral hops. Smells like this is going to be on the lighter side of the IPA spectrum.

T – Starts off sweet with bready and grainy malt with a touch of caramel. Hops come through later on with orange, lemon, some grapefruit, floral, and grassy notes. Again, on the lighter side.

S – Light-to-medium-bodied, good carbonation, a smooth and slightly chewy mouthfeel, and a bittersweet and dry finish. Grapefruit hop flavors linger for a nice amount of time.

O – This is a decent IPA. It’s on the lighter side, making it a bit like a hopped-up pale ale, but it’s tasty and drinkable nonetheless. The fact that this beer comes in a can ups the overall score a bit for me – I love everything about cans. Despite that little personal preference, this is a nice beer that is worth a try if you’re in the area.

Canned on 6/9/14 and reviewed on 6/25. Poured into a tulip. The pour is slightly hazy and light apricot in color. It sports about a finger of coarse white foam. Retention is average. Very little lacing. The nose is quite pungent and piney. Leafy and hemp-like. Lots of grapefruit and a little lemon. The can says it has Columbus hops. It has that white pepper and rye smell of Amarillo.

Medium body and firm feel. Very little malt sweetness present, just enough to support an aggressive salvo of hops. The bitterness is not what I would call "citrusy'' (as advertised on the can). It's more acrid and resin-like with lots of herbal, flowery notes. Sharp bitterness lingers long after swallowing.

Overall, a nice IPA. Although I found it a bit unbalanced, it did grow on my over the course of a 6-pack. It reminds me of SN Torpedo, but with a bit less malt and a bit more bitterness.

I really don't want to get into the whole semantics of this beer. I will say this, that I had Shiva in a can, and it was not drinkable .

So I came to the brewery on Coxe and tried the Perfect Day IPA and their flagship IPA, which is the Shiva.

Both had skunky, off flavor aromas you'd expect from typical adjunct lagers. So, I had to quickly choose my poison, literally.

Well, I decided on a pizza and the Shiva.

Shiva, now on tap after having had it in the can, confirmed my suspicions. Pure battery acid taste. I must say this is the worst beer I have ever had in my life!- even worse than Busch Light.

I'm so glad the gal served me some bad tap water first. After two sips of the Shiva, I almost threw up. I drank the bad tap water with the average pizza, pushed the Shiva aside.

I now know this wasn't a fluke. They actually brew this vile tasting beer, and apparently the people like it?

Shame on them for this, even a first time home brewer shouldn't make anything this bad.The pizza wasn't very good either, no surprise.

I don't like to denigrate local breweries, but this is unacceptable and offensive.

A: Copper with a very light haze, a little fine bubbled carbonation, 4 fingers of foamy white, brown tinged head. Chunky lacing.

S: Pine, caramel, toffee, light orange candy, light onion and garlic. Malt and a hint of battery acid.

T: Floral and fruity, light sweetness, smooth with a final bitterness that comes in as an aftertaste. Orange candy, roses, toffee.

M: Medium thick syrupy body, medium low carbonation.

O: Highly drinkable and smooth.

I have had this at the brewery. I have had it in cans, its better on draft, but I love the fact they are canning it now, so I can bring some home with me to store easily for when I want one. Overall this is probably my favorite NC IPA. It is always made and if you are in the Asheville area you can easily obtain a sixpack or two or three to bring home with you. Its not outrageously expensive for what it is and its really tasty.

Smell: Floral, great IPA aroma.

Taste: Floral, hop forward, not bitter but well balanced, especially when served on the colder side which is what I prefer.

Overall: One of my favorite go to beers and its the best year around NC IPA that I have had. While others may be better they are limited releases or seasonal. So, if you find yourself in the Asheville area pick up a six pack and/or go to the Brewery they have two locations and damn good beer and pizza to boot!

SAmpling a cellar temp 12 oz can poured into a snifter. Beer is a courtesy of my cousin Joe in NC. thanks bro!

The beer pours a clear bright copper hue with fluffy eggshell white head of 2 cm foaming up and fading slowly to a surface layer leaving some tightly packed lattice after each sip.
Aroma is some grassy and rindy hop notes. There is a bit of biscuit malt buried in the background of the nose.
First sip reveals crisp textured body with very fine and slightly spacious carbonation.
Flavor is some sweet grainy malt which rolls to a crisp hop bite featuring grapefruit rind and a general herbal astringency on the finish.
I dont get any alcohol heat or presence and find this to be a smooth drinking IPA that could be sessionable but would sneak up on you after a few.
certainly a well crafted beer with interesting qualities to make quaffing more than one a worthwhile endeavor.
