Purchased recently from Bruisin Ales. 22oz bomber going into nonic print glass. Very pale orange-yellow with a solid finger of white froth. Aroma of grapefruit with very little malt detected. Crisp, grassy hop flavor with noticeable cirtus. Dry, white grapefruit juice, slightly acidic. Bitter in the middle, dry acidic in the back. All hops on this one and somewhat astringent making this one not too easy to drink for a long time.

I have sampled the beer in the past and it seemed that has been dumbed down a little, hmm maybe not.Poured from the tap a mix of ;ighter maber and deep orange,a thinner white head atop.Mainly citric hop in the nose,a mild toasted grain note as well.Pretty run of the mill citric hop quality on the palate, some grapefruit and lemon pith,a biscuit dough malt base is noticed.I used to think this was a great IPA now just above average really.

From BeerAdvocate magazine Issue #64 (May 2012):

LOOK: Light hazy golden, impressive meringue-like head

SMELL: Fresh oranges, rinds, floral

TASTE: Smooth, creamy, smack of citric hops, grapefruit, tangerines, floral, grassy, herbal, leafy, bready, hay, dry, aspirin-like edge

What we have here is an American IPA that delivers its hop-centric payload to the palate somewhat aggressively while retaining drinkability. The citric aromas and flavors are the highlight, along with its dry backbone. It’s a much lighter IPA—in color, body and malt flavor—which should switch things up for many hopheads.

Bomber pours a mostly clear, pale honey amber body with a small offwhite head that leaves wispy lace on the glass.

Aroma is muted, with hints of florals, pine, grass, and grapefruit.

Mouthfeel is light medium to medium bodied with zesty carbonation and a mild hops bite.

Taste is on the bitter side, with earthy and grassy hops, grapefruit and pine notes, and some toasted caramel. Finishes bitter and dry.

Very sessionable.

22oz bottle into a DFH Signature Glass. No date on the bottle.

I picked this up on a recent trip to Asheville. I thought it only right to support the local breweries by trying some of their interpretations of my favorite styles. Asheville Brewing's Shiva IPA is one of the ones that I decided to roll the dice on.

A: Pours a hazy light copper. Very little head, even with the laser etching on the DFH glass. Moderate lacing.

S: Weak nose. Not much of a hop aroma. Not much malt sweetness either. Smells a little salty.

T: Tastes of soda water and a touch of salty "hops." Very much bland; borderline watery. A moderate bitter bite on the back end lingers slightly. Maybe this is an old bottle. Typically I wouldn't have gambled on an undated IPA, and I regret doing so on this one.

M: Extra thin. Moderate carbonation can't even beef this one up. This beer dosen't seem to get anything right.

D: Well, at least this beer is inoffensive, I guess. Actually, its blandness is offensive.

There are much better beers to be had in Asheville. Sisters of the Moon IPA or anything by Pisgah, for example. As for this one , I wouldn't buy it again.

22oz. bomber served in a snifter

A: Amber/orange body with some visible carbonation. Very nice and fluffy yellow-tinged, off-white head that reduces to a patchy but lasting film and leaves lacy lacing on the glass.

S: Citrus fruit, vague herbs and grasses over a light toasted bread. A mild bit of alcohol appeared after warming, as does a bit of dank/metaliic tint. 3.25

T: The hops produce a juicy citrus mix with lemon, orange and grapefruit notes, plus hints of pine. Subtle but good malt backbone tempers the bitterness, although it finishes with a mild hop bitterness. 3.75

M: Medium bodied; slightly sticky; low (probably too low) carbonation; smooth. The finish is slightly dry. 3.75

O: An excellent, full flavored PA. As an American IPA, it's a bit under-hopped. Still, Shiva has a tasty, well-balanced mix of citrus hops and medium-to-light roast malt that should satisfy folks who aren't hellbent on a strong hop hit.

Bomber from Bruisin' Ales in Asheville, courtesy of Sachin of Five Points Bottle in Athens, GA.

Pours a pale copper color with a one-finger white head. The head dissipates into a patchy layer on top leaving light lacing.

Smells of herbal and raw hops with hints of citrus backed by pale malts.

Tastes similar to how it smells. The hops taste like they belong in a Belgian IPA, and what I mean by that is that they're more suited for nuance than an IPA. The pale malts offer a nice backbone and it has decent balance. Ending is mildly bitter.

Mouthfeel is good. It's got a good thickness with solid carbonation.

Drinkability is good. I didn't have a problem finishing the bomber and could see myself drinking a few of these in one sitting.

Overall this was by no means a bad IPA, but there are too many others with more flavor that I would choose instead.

Big off white head just sorts sits above a clear bronze highlighted colored golden beer.

A citrus and piney hops aroma is quite light with a added light soapiness and even lighter malts.

A lighter taste of citrus and piney hops with some light malts and even a very light yeast in the taste of the IPA.

A dry aftertaste with some bitterness and hops tastes remaining on this medium bodied beer.

Pretty good west coast hops taste considering this is an east coast beer, although it pales in comparison to a lot of west coast IPA's but it's nice to know the west coast IPA style's influence extends and continues to gain notice and popularity within the beer world.

Golden orange, semi hazy brew with a milky white, soap bubbly, thin head. Lace is a bit too slick to stick. Smells lightly grainy with a little bit of caramel mixed with diacetyl, topped with a sprinkling of floral, orange and pine. Basic but nice aroma. I'd like it to be bigger. Taste is alright. Bitter hops, and bready caramel malt. Could use more malt and aroma hops, as well as a better arrangement. Body is on the line between light and medium (more on the light side) with a somewhat resiny texture. Easy going down.

Not bad, OK.

A - pours orange with a big, thick, white head that has great retention

S - big citrus notes, a bit floral, underlying spicy hops

T - faint bready malt, heavy citrusy notes, faint pine, earthy, a bit spicy

M - medium bodied, smooth, well carbonated

This is a really solid and refreshing beer. It has great flavor and great drinkability. This is definitely an IPA that's worth checking out. It comes in cans too which is a plus for the hot summer pool or ball game days.

Served from tap at the brewpub into an Asheville Brewing Company shaker. Poured hazy yellow orange with a one finger white head that subsided to a minimal amount slowly. There was no lacing evident throughout. The aroma was comprised of malt and pine hops. The flavor was of malt and pine hops that showed up in a nice crisp followthrough. It had a medium feel on tha palate with mild carbonation. Overall this was not a bad IPA. It was very simple in nature which could have been its downfall though. It just needed more complexity to it to be memorable. But overall this a nice refreshing IPA.
