Can > Pint Glass

A - Pours a nice clear yellow straw color, 1 finger of sudsy head, minimal lacing.
S - Caramel malt, some dried fruit, a little overly ripe fruit mix, some dank hop resin
T - Really bready and caramel type malt opens up with some tropical fruit in the background, then big sticky hop resin.
M - Bitter, and slightly chewy, sticks to your palate.
O - Ok IPA, nothing outstanding.

Some friends, who shall both remain nameless and who know how much I like it in the CAN brought me a buncha North Carolina CANs to try on their last visit. The CANQuest (TM) CANtinues on its merry way!

From the CAN: "The destroyer, the creator, the benefactor. Shiva is all these things. A crisp, citrusy India Pale Ale with a light color, Shiva will destroy your perceptions of an I.P.A. Transcendentally simple malt bill accents a generous helping of Columbus hops lending an intense floral aroma with hints of grapefruit and a pleasant bittering quality. One taste, and your palette [sic] will be lifted to higher planes of consciousness."

Ooh, naughty Shiva! She was another squirter, letting loose on my fingers during the Crack! I do not mind a good squirt, but a heads up might be nice. It was a brimful craft CAN, so I went with an inverted Glug to see of what Shiva was made. Hearty stuff, apparently, as I got a little overflow before creating three dense fingers of tawny head with excellent retention. Color was a deep golden-yellow (SRM = > 5, < 7) with NE-quality clarity and lo and behold, my gold-obsessed drinking partners, Croesus, Mammon and King Midas all showed up, fighting for a taste. Nose was both citrusy with grapefruit, but I also got a tropical whiff, like coconut. Wild, man! Shiva danced across my tongue, a willing participant in my little tete-a-tete, with a smooth taste and flavor that many AIPAs seem to be lacking. It may have been "a simple malt bill", but it was just right as far as I was concerned. My tongue has been taking a hops beating lately and for Shiva to come by and not destroy me was a welcome event. Finish was only semi-dry, so the hops were not as intense as advertised, but it was still a fine beer. I hope to win the Shiva Bowl this year.

Pours pale in color with a bigg frothy 2 finger white head that has great retention. There is also some nice lacing all over the glass.

Smell has big notes of citrus, primarily grapefruit and grapefruit rind along with some light cgrainy and straw like malt.

Hops are forward and have a very herbal flavor along with a heafty amount of bitterness that is not overdone. Some more citrus rind come in at the end of this beer and has a lasting bitter oily taste. I like what's going on however the flavor are a little on the light side.

Mouthfeel is good, light crisp, bitter and slightly dry finish. A little thin.

Overall this was a pretty good ipa. Nothing mind blowing but I think it does deserve a better rating then it has

12 oz can poured into a tulip at fridge-cellar temperature.

L – Pale amber color with a 3-finger bubbly, frothy, white head. Pretty nice retention and some patches of lacing. Crystal clear with a decent amount of bubbles.

S – Bready and mild caramel malt with orange, lemongrass, and mildly floral hops. Smells like this is going to be on the lighter side of the IPA spectrum.

T – Starts off sweet with bready and grainy malt with a touch of caramel. Hops come through later on with orange, lemon, some grapefruit, floral, and grassy notes. Again, on the lighter side.

S – Light-to-medium-bodied, good carbonation, a smooth and slightly chewy mouthfeel, and a bittersweet and dry finish. Grapefruit hop flavors linger for a nice amount of time.

O – This is a decent IPA. It’s on the lighter side, making it a bit like a hopped-up pale ale, but it’s tasty and drinkable nonetheless. The fact that this beer comes in a can ups the overall score a bit for me – I love everything about cans. Despite that little personal preference, this is a nice beer that is worth a try if you’re in the area.
