on-tap at the brewpub

Pours a dark amber/brown with a small off-white head. Smell is nice and malty with some hop spiciness just coming through. Taste is malty (English malt with fruit notes) with subdued hops (too subdued) that prickle in the finish. Mouthfeel is medium in body and quite low carb for the style.

ESB's are all about balance making them a very difficult beer to pull off. This one doesn't have the malt excellence that the best in the style have and needs more hoppage to balance out with that malt. For me the worst part was it's extremely low carbonation that made it seem sort of boring and flat. Still not a bad beer.

So when I headed downtown yesterday I got to of course stop in and was happy to see a brew on tap I had not had before. Now I must admit I am not the biggest fan of ESB's in general, but it is a style that I can defiantly get into when I am in the write state of mind. Last night was one of those nights, so I jhust had to order one up. Came out in a nice chilled pint glass, which I normally turn away from, but in this case I really dont feel it distracted from the overall enjoyment of this at all. So onto the review..

A - Poured a Very nice dark reddish amber hue, almost like a cherry wood color. Nice about one inch head graced the top, but then slowly settled down to reveal nothing more then a thin layer of lace clinging to the sides of the glass. Nice carbonation stream coming up from the bottom of the glass. Decent overall look.

S - Nicely hopped, but totally dominated by the malted grains. Had a nice roasted aroma buried within, and a touch of some earthy grassy type of smell. Quite nice, albeit a little light to pick up. Did not come accross as overly bitter on the nose.

T - Well balanced. A good earthen malt attacked was pushed back with a light piney hoppiness that left a nice long lingering bitter finish. I was suprised by the level of hops in here actually. Quite nice flavor, and fantastic balance. Seemed to be very light, but there was alot more going on then you would think after having some.

M - Very crisp, yet smooth on the finish. Nice carbonation kept it from feeling dull. It had a great finish, no oily left over and no thin watered down feel. Just thick enough to know you were drinking quality, without being too thin that you could think it was essesntially water, pretty good stuff honestly.

D - Great. I could have had 2-3 more of these with ease. No real high ABV so it is basically a good session beer. But it was not too light, so a 12 pack might be pushing it. Gave you a nice full feeling after you had finished one though.

Overall I thought this was rather good. I continue to be impressed by whatever I try coming out of here. They seem to not really push the envelope, but rather take some tired old styles and make them have a bit of life to them . Good job on this one, I will definatly be returning soon.

Poured on-tap at the brewery and served in a shaker pint, the beer is a hazy, caramel coloring, with an off-white, fluffy head. Nose of toffee and floral highlights. Simple and balanced. The flavors are roasted nut and toffee forward, with a subtle and tangy sweet highlight. Smooth, mid-bodied, with a tangy and richly sweet aftertaste. Smooth, clean finish. Very drinkable.

I sampled this beer the other day and liked it! While it is considered an ESB, I would put it in the American Amber Ale category instead. Medium body, good hope aroma and decent finish. Carbonation seemed ok and came with 1" head that dissolved rather slowly. Serving temperature was spot on.

Nice, light mahogany body, clear with little haed or lacing, but that's appropriate.

Smells a bit fruity/sweet, little sour.

Tastes a bit too sweet, like it's a bit under attenuated. Sweet malt with a twinge of bitterness finishing things off.

Mouthfeel is too highly carbonated for an ESB.

It's an ok pint, but I wouldn't order it again. Seems like there are some brewer errors with this one.

Appearance: Near clear, mahogany-hued body with a slim coating of white suds.

Smell: An earthy spiciness yields to sweet-scented caramel-coated toast and a low hint of fruitiness.

Taste: A mixture tasting of pale, caramel, and altogether toasty Munich malts. Sweetish in the fore. Nicely timed pop of fruitiness, and spicy, floral, lightly citrusy hops. Lightly bitterness. Fairly drying, but still malty and just a bit sweet at the finish.

Mouthfeel: Medium-light body. Medium carbonation.

Overall: Not bad! A decently drinkable ESB rendition.
